i think this is brilliant music journalism. no arrogance, annoying egocentricity, no pretentious over analysis, no stickupmyass writing, just excellent research, casual objectivity, strong yet simple writing and incredibly focused and well rounded. best thing ive seen in mojo for a while.

I was about to say, I R intrigued. Does Amoeba actually carry magazines?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

PLUS, they have a short piece alongside the main feature on martin h!!!!!!!!!! who is a supreme production genius and one of the best that ever did it!

xpost, Not really, but if I see it at my newsstand (which is usually pretty good about stocking MOJO) I'll pick up an extra copy.

pete doherty resembles ian curtis, no?

You mean he's a junkie, yes?

excellent research, casual objectivity, strong yet simple writing

These things suck.

Actually this is a very good piece indeed - apart from the main JD piece and New Order interview, there are smaller pieces on Hannett and Rob Gretton and even an interview with Natalie Curtis, Ian's daughter (now 26 and a photographer). In terms of personal histories as opposed to musical analysis (which the article tends to avoid) then it's a pretty good place to start for newcomers who want to learn more about the group who, in my opinion, were and are the greatest in all of pop.

(and, needless to say, this is the kind of thing Mojo's rival needs to be doing...)

I have not read it, but I have bought it. It was this impulse purchase that led to me losing my train ticket.

This has been the one issue of Necro Mojo that sold out at the campus newsagents the day it arrived in. Some great stuff in the mag - the Joy Division article, the Jan & Dean one, the Count Ossie one too - and yet everything I buy this thing, I feel like I want to shoot myself. That write up for the free CD is just plain cretinous: "Warning - contains some of the most difficult music ever!!". Cheers guys, I'll try not to soil my slacks now.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 4 March 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

Pah! I'd play that CD to Alice, no problem (she quite enjoyed "Bat Chain Puller" yesterday...)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 4 March 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Alice : "Rubber Dolphins???"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 4 March 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Yes, in terms of "difficult music" the Futureheads are really up there with Albert Ayler aren't they?

Hi. I'm new here. My first ever post, and I'm afraid it's not a positive one.

I finished reading Touching From a Distance by Deborah Curtis last week, and this article in Mojo is just another chronological run through of Ian's life as per Deborah's account. If you're looking for anything new, apart from the Vox pop style peices (including a great little peice by Shaun Ryder) you may as well Touching From A Distance.. It's like £4 in HMV..

But still, despite all this reading of Joy Division and relistening to the albums, I'm still a little lost - they, as a band, sound ...floundering. Ian's lyrics are good. But it's all a little undrewhelmming and dated...

The first thing to ask about about any issue of Mojo is: "Is there a CD with it?"; the second thing: "Is it any good?"

Some Dadaismus Implied (Dada), Friday, 4 March 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

The interview with Natalie Curtis was touching. She has some involvement in the film so hopefully it won't be a complete botch ...

And your verdict this month is...?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 4 March 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I was asking! Haven't seen it yet.

Some Dadaismus Implied (Dada), Friday, 4 March 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

How bad can a CD with "NonAlignment Pact" and "Skank Bloc Bologna" be?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 4 March 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's the same old post-punk gubbins really. No Joy Division - kinda weird! Nice to see Mission of Burma getting some recognition among the wrinklies though, even if they got the song title wrong.
