note: the author of that is on slsk with a sick amount of miami bass. looks like he's re-organized his collection in the same chronology as the article, as well. username: PappaWheelie

john'n'chicago, Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

yeah, his slsk folder is insane, not just for miami bass but for dance music and electro/experimental-ish stuff in general.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

oh i remember pappawheelie from slsk

wait a minute, doesnt a certain US ilxor, resident in the uk at the moment, know this guy, or, am i mixing things up?

ilkley lido (gareth), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

he also does the electrodiscopunks list (http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/ElectroDiscoPunks/), which i used to be on until it got to be too much for me to read every day.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Sorry to throw off the hyperlink party, but what's Miami Bass sound like? If, judging from previous posts, it's Disco punk, I'm off to Soulseek.

WillSommer, Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Haha its way better than discopunk!

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

(IMO jk lol)

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

You've heard Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock," right? Its like if someone turned that song into an entire genre.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

it is the greatest music yet born of man

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

me and blount are both OTM

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

ok i dont have soulseek.

i've read this papa wheelie piece before, it's the bomb.

if anyone is ready to burn me a few cds and lives either in london or paris i've got plenty of good shit in exchange. www.radioclit.com or listen to my mix on d-i-r-t-y to check what's up

thanks!

radioclit, Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

It's so funny that this stuff is considered rare now. I remember it used to absolutely fill the "rap" section of Harmony House.

My friends older brother used to only own Miami bass albums. He was very proud of his car stereo system to the point that he entered it in shows. I always called the music "bass tester music." I thought it was specifically made to test how much bass your car stereo could produce.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

I just scanned this thread, but what the best comp I had (in 87) was that 2 Live Is What We Are mix/comp with 2 Live Crew and MC Shy D.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

The "This Is Bass" series of comps, available on Amazon, look pretty good. link To the orinial poster--most Miami Bass stuff that I've heard is not slow--are you maybe thinking more of bounce stuff in the New Orleans style?

I take back what I said about not having heard slow miami bass. "Bass Rock Express" and lots of others I remembered are pretty slow...

two months pass...
Wow...I wasn't looking for this, and I certainly don't think I've yet earned this kind of praise, but thanks!!!

Regarding Miami Bass's tempo and origins, it's a misnomer to cite Planet Rock as the inspiration. LL Cool J's Rock the Bells is the actual inpiration for Miami to switch from fast 1983 Electro ala Pretty Tony to mid-tempo 1985 Bass ala Double Duce/Prime Choice/Ghetto Bass/etc. Although Amos Larkins swears he didn't hear Rock the Bells until after he produced all thoise proto-bass records, I'm sure the inspiration was indirect due to the commercial nature of the business.

This stuff was mostly produced for mobile DJ's such as Ghetto Style Express/CM Express/etc, as well as mix tapes for cars, so temp wasn't too much of a concern. It sped up shortly after for the sake of the clubs, which is when Plaent Rock started to get sampled, along with Kraftwerk and Clear or whatever. That portion of the music came after the fact...

Where the hell was I when this was originally posted? Now back to the search funtion to find the thread I was originally looking for.

hey i have to belatedly praise that bass history page - i had that thing bookmarked for ages

jones (actual), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

I only downloaded the Ghetto Tech & Booty Bass comp from you the other day PapaWheelie - been enjoying it a lot.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 2 June 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Really? Uh, I don't have any Ghetto Tech! (I'm not a fan of Ghetto Tech/Ghetto House/Baltimore Breaks type stuff).

As far as my Miami album recommendations, I think the first 2 Live Crew album is the perfect example of 1st wave bass (1985-1987), and the Cut it Up Def Bass Jams compilation is the prime example of 2nd Wave Bass (1988-1991)[although that's OOP].

Most 3rd wave Booty stuff is what hit huge on the radio, such as Whoomp/Whoot, There it Is/Tootsie Roll/C'mon Ride the Train/Shake Watcha Mama gave Ya/Da Dip/My Baby Mama/etc. That's when I lost interest, and began listening to Sterolab too much.

As the article shows, there's also the car audio stuff, which most car audio fans agree that Techmaster PEB's Bass Computer is the pillar of. I can't see why anyone would want that stuff unless you're into car shows with stereo "drag racing" events as it's just bass without rapping, scratching, syncopation, etc. Very aural, incidental background stuff over elongated bass notes.

That sounds amazing actually. Like the My Bloody Valentine of bass or something.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

As a Miami resident here's who was popular then:

TKA, Debbie Deb, Cover Girls, Exposé, Noel, Gucci II Crew, Stevie B, Will To Power, and some more who I'm sure I'll remember later.

This looks like some of my current DJ sets in Williamsburg!

(I don't have any Ghetto Tech!) Interesting - why not??

No cerebral thought out reason; it just failed to move me at all. Sounds like a carbon copy of what I used to like when I was a teen I guess. Maybe a better way to say it is it's similar to why all the rockists hate new "fashion rock" bands (which I like, to some degree).

I wish! More like Paul Hardcastle's Jazzmasters, but w/o the Jazz. Bass 305 were the most atmospheric of the bunch. Techmaster was more known for stuttering vocal snippets ontop of very stiff beat patterns. Most of those CD's evolved to the point where they'd just have sine waves alone at the end of them that'd go on for 10 minutes. Bass Mekanik (Neil Case) took over the scene towards the end of the 90's.

A poll. Over 500 classic Bass songs to choose from. You can choose 127 options (damn wordpress limitations).

Top 100 make it to a radio countdown show on http://www.miamibassfm.com/Home.html

Thanks, Whiney! @ 1:17:00 is Jim Jonsin connecting the dots from starting at Cut it Up Def as Jealous J to his 2005/2006 BMI breakthrough.

Of course, the movie was made available at their site :-)

I'm really glad some are enjoying it!

I wish DJ Magic Mike, Calvin Mills, and a few others could've been included, but it's long enough, as it is....

Magic Mike and I have gotten somewhat closer since then, so I know his side of history gets covered on RBMA radio:
