Pink Martini - C/D?

The album Hang On Little Tomato seems to be all over the place at the moment but somehow I've avoided managing to hear anything from it. Is this just more bland homogenised World Muzak studium soup or is it worth spending money on?

They do that song off the car advert that goes "Je ne veux pas travailler, je ne veux pas something-something-er, je veux seulement oublier, et puis je fume." It was on a Hotel Costes compilation about three years ago. A slight number, but I really liked it for a short while.

have only heard an earlier alb. of theirs; that was much more "launge/easy" than any sort of "world muzak", i'd say.

Is this a Mike Flowers Pops kind of deal, then?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 4 March 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

not quite that either, to my ears. it sounded rather a "sophisto bar-jazz-pop" sorta thing, for the most part.
well as for paying money for that stuff - i actually did, but the record was seriously cut-price also. i wouldn't pay full price for them myself.

I adore 'em! "Tomato" has spent more time in my player than any CD in recent memory. Yes, more "lounge/easy" than "world/muzak," but they're tough to pigeonhole. I can't think of another group currently doing quite what they do.

The new album has "Anna" which is a great track. I first heard them on the Costes: La Suite mix too. Sympathique and the title track are great, but I fear they may be too bourgeois dinner party for some ilm-ers.

I saw them about a month ago for some lobbyist shindig my wife had to go to. They were meh, but the lobbyists were digging on them.

They're always playing in town at the Schnitzer with the Portland Symphony so I have the impression that old people think that they're dangerous and hip or something.

two years pass...

I'm warming to this.

You mean, like, globally?

Classic. "Sympathique" is a great album, their cover of "Brazil" (em portugues, sim) is dynamite, although I prefer Mo Horizons version for the pure funk-factor.

I've been a Pink Martini fan for years, but finally saw them live the first time a few months ago and I was really impressed - such incredible musicianship combined with wry humor, stylistic variety and songs sung in at least 6 languages is something that any other "lounge" group could only dream about. They draw material heavily from obscure old vinyl, so that ought to resonate with plenty of ILM'ers, yeah?

I saw them a long time ago at that bar in the Puck building. I like the band, not so crazy about her. But, yeah, "Sympathique" is worth owning, good song choices all around.

My (admittedly small) sample of them turned up dud. They seem like a smart formula without real inspiration; e.g., good original songs. The lounge standard I heard could have been done better by any mid-size-city-best-hotel jazz act.

they're pleasant in a pretty blah way.
