Is It True That Australia Is The New Seattle?

Cuz that's what my e-mail is telling me:

"Australia's the new Seattle...."

"Listen up folks!! Australia is no longer the home of England's cast-off criminals, but home to some of the most creative music being made today. Yeah yeah, the barrier reef is nifty and koala bears are cute but the real news is about all the fine musicians who are making some noise down under including the Waifs, Missy Higgins and well, my personal fave, the oh so fabulous John Butler Trio who grace the current issue of Rolling Stone Australia.

If you haven't heard of the John Butler Trio --don't worry you will. The band is appearing down at SXSW's annual music festival at the tres-cool Esquire Party on March 19th, opening for the Black Crowes on March 22, and will appear on Letterman on March 29! Plus you can see them perform at Bonarroo, Jazzfest and in a local venue near you.

So - let's get down to business, If you haven't covered John Butler Trio's U.S. debut album "Sunrise Over Sea" which is coming out on March 15, then I urge you to do so immediately. Seriously folks, this is one heck of a debut and many of you have already show support for this incredible Aussie trio! JBT's blend of folk, bluegrass, and roots is receiving rave reviews and according to the new issue of Performing Songwriter, "Butler shows us Americans what the folks Down Under have known for some time: [John Bulter] is a force to be reckoned with."

John Butler Trio "Sunrise Over Sea" is in stores March 15 - who needs a copy?"

Nobody, I'd guess.

"Australia's the new Seattle...."

"It Takes a Nation of Millions to Keep Us Down."

earlnash, Friday, 4 March 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

No, New Zealand in the early to mid-90s was the new Seattle.

ffirehorse, Friday, 4 March 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Because Seattle was known for its hugely popular folk/bluegrass/roots scene.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 March 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Also, koalas are not bears. GET ONE ZOOKEEPERS HANDBOOK.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 March 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Last month the new Seattle was Montreal, now it is Australia... Please decide which is which.

blawa (blawa), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

Just how big of a city is Australia?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I thought someone had revived this thread from some alternate-ILX that existed in 1996.

nabiscothingy, Friday, 4 March 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

whatever you do save your ears from the freaking acidic aural blitz that is the John Butler Trio. it's bloody horrible.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

though there are some better bands playing SXSW, like Cut Copy and Wolfmother and the Bumblebeez and the Morning After Girls though i might add.

see them instead.

When will Tasmania be the new Australia? Can't Australia be the new Detroit again and take it away from those pansies in Scandinavia? And when will Supagroup get to be the new AC/DC? When will the Marcus Hook Roll Band's LP be the new found again old Ted Nugent? Is it true Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs were the old Grand Funk? Is it true new Rose Tattoo CDs will replace your old Rose Tattoo CDs because the art is better? Is it true the Kings of Leon have become the old Kings of the Sun? When will Jet be the new Buckcherry? When will the new AC/DC quit screwing about and be the old AC/DC? Is it true that everyone in Australia wears bush clothing and jumps on venomous snakes? Is it true cane toads are the new pit bulls? Is it true that vegemite is the new peanut butter?

George Smith, Friday, 4 March 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

John Butler Trio... awfully boring music for awfully boring people...

Listen to Gerling and Decoder Ring.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

Seattle was the new Perth, back in the day.

moley (moley), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

I kinda like John Butler when he just shuts up and plays his guitar....

dwayne dibley (frownland), Saturday, 5 March 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Saturday, 5 March 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

She's a woman
You know what I mean?

Well of course I do. Everyone does. It's not an unfamilar word. Now if Wolfmother had sung:

She's a monotreme
You know what I mean?

Then that would have been a legitimate question.

moley (moley), Saturday, 5 March 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

God, I hope not, for their sake. And ours, I guess. I don't think I could survive 50 live Ben Lee CDS confronting me whenever I walked into a record store without opening my veins.

John Justen (johnjusten), Saturday, 5 March 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

and don't get me started on the waifs

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Saturday, 5 March 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

other australian bands that suck: riff random

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Saturday, 5 March 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

Do not encourage this boring, dirty hippy to cross the water. Once he has entered, the man will play at anything that even remotely resembles a music festival, envelope-openings notwithstanding. Heed our warning, or suffer the consequences.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 5 March 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

did starbucks originate in seattle? if so, yeah, australia is the new seattle.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 5 March 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

wombatX (wombatX), Saturday, 5 March 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

Let that remain our nasty little secret, wombat.

moley (moley), Saturday, 5 March 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

I saw 78 Saab last week, they had a sort of bland REM sheen about them, the did do a nice Velvet Underground cover though (which is very REM)

mentalist (mentalist), Saturday, 5 March 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

isn't John Butler a FUCKING AMERICAN ANYWAY?

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 5 March 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah he is. I guess he moved here so he wouldn't have to compete with Dave Matthews.

Seuss, Saturday, 5 March 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

"Australia is no longer the home of England's cast-off criminals"

Wait! When did this happen?

Next thing they'll be saying the USA is no longer led by crazed fundamentalist missionaries. Oh wait...

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Saturday, 5 March 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

koalas are not bears, they are tacos

and john butler trio are the anal placenta bombs of a rotting bongo vagina.

if we're using higgins and jet and the other fucktards, australia is more like the small trailer park septic tank outside Buttfucke, Montana.

Queen gottalottalove, Saturday, 5 March 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

Lots of OTM stuff here. Most good Australian music doesn't get noticed, the shit rises to the top. Hence your John Butlers trios, Missy Higginseses, Tha Waifs et al.

kate/baby loves headrub (papa november), Saturday, 5 March 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realise Crowded House was a new band? ;)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 5 March 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Can I just add to the chorus of JBT vitriol, and also spread that rumour that he was seen driving around Melbourne in a Porsche convertible playing his own album really loudly?

haitch (haitch), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Italy is the New Portland!

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 5 March 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)
