times in high school or college where you went backstage at a show that you thought was a big deal...

alright, me first... high school. got tickets for violent femmes in ann arbor and decided that my 'in' for a backstage pass would be to wait by their bus and with a bunch of cuban cigars for the bass player before the show. worked like a charm, but the backstage meet 'n' greet was completely uncomfortable. felt like a grade school dance where the boys all stood against one wall and the girls all stood against the other. finally the totally awkward mingling began and before i knew it, we were swept back outside.

I went backstage at a Black Grape show at the Kentish Town Forum. It was not what I imagined.

Liz Phair at the Vic in Chicago circa 1995.

Me: "'May Queen' is such a great song. Why didn't you pick it as the single over 'Supernova'?"

Her: "Um, who cares?"

Also, two years later at the World Music Ampitheater, also in Chicago, when Rivers Cuomo offered me my pick of "skanky groupie action." I politely declined.

At the Magic Stick when I discovered there really isnt a backstage, just a sidestage kind of and went into it and met people from bands I don't know.

In high school, I got to go on The Band's tour bus. Levon Helm was playing Atari. Then I was backstage after their set, and Rick Danko gave me the smile and point .. I though he was totally cool for remembering seeing me an hour before.

Also, i was standing next to Jane Scott as she interviewed them. I wish I had talked to her more.

i booked some shows in college and remember the demystification of "backstage" came before a paul weterberg show sometime in 1992. on his way to soundcheck about 3 hours before the show, he passed me on the stairs as he groggily made his way to his soundcheck. he was obviously tired and not particularly stoked to be anywhere other than bed at that point. but he had a job to do and a multi-thousand dollar check to collect, so hi-ho-hi-ho... it was freeing. from that brief moment, i no longer put these people up on pedastools.

before that though, evan dando was doing a show and was so freaking nice. we were talking about his schedule and he mentioned he was doing a show the following day at grinnel, my friend sam's school. sam was on the concert committee there, so i was like "tell sam that john said hi." he said, "i will. sam, right?" i confirmed and we parted after some small talk.

a couple of days later, i got a message from sam saying "john, did you tell evan dando to say hi to me?"

I've never been backstage at a proper show and would probably think it was a big deal. How do you do it?

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 4 March 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

GBV in Columbus, 1997. It was that show right after the Addicted to Noise interview where Bob stated he was getting rid of his current lineup, but failed to actually tell his bandmates.

Needless to say, it was pretty tense and I nearly was thrown out for holding an alcoholic beverage!

I’ll never forget that magnificent night backstage with Lil Kim.

nabiscothingy, Friday, 4 March 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a true story. I know (or knew) a couple guys in Pete Yorn's band, and we were all hanging out backstage before his sold-out show at Roseland a couple years back. A friend of mine goes into Pete's private bathroom, locks the door and commences in (allegedly) imbibing in various substances.

After a few minutes, Pete (now 15 minutes before showtime) heads over to the bathroom, only to find it locked. He starts pounding on the door, saying "Come on, dude! I have to take a shit!" No answer. A few more pounds, and finally my friend stumbles out. I expected Pete to be (justifiable) furious, but he just laughed it off and went in to take care of business.

I can honestly say that he was BEYOND cool with the situation. If I was about to play a show in front of thousands of people, and some clown I didn't know locked himself in my bathroom to do God-knows-what when I had to take a shit, I would have been screaming and crying like Elton John or J-Lo.

growing up here in Tennessee, I worked for a while at an AM radio station, and got in free at this Bobby Bland show at a chitlin'-circuit kinda club on the wrong side of the tracks, this was in the '80s. The usual thing where me and my date and this other guy were the only white people there. So we saw the show, Bobby Bland gargled 10,000 times and it was good, and we got to go hang out on his bus parked out in the parking lot, and his bodyguard was there checking us out. We though maybe Bobby would, you know, wanna smoke some "gage" with us given his proclivities toward weed, but instead he just offered us some Miller Lite and ginger ale, and complimented my girlfriend's rather revealing outfit. That was it, he posed for a picture with us, my girlfriend took off about a year later and I never did get a copy of that photo.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 4 March 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This is embarrasing: CSN some time in the late '80s. Then suddenly I was stuck in a dressing room alone with Graham Nash and his mullet, and he primped and preened it for a good fifteen minutes, and was annoyed I was there. I was only 16 or so and didn't know what to do, so I just stared at the floor. My brother was in rehab at the time and Crosby, upon returning, told me all about the 12 steps and how I have to support and help my brother in his recovery rather than being angry about it. He (Crosby) was actually very nice to me.

in high school: saw come in louisville on their first tour, got to know them a little bit as it was a sparsely-attended show and my friend jesse and i were huge fans already by that point. a month later they played cinci with eleventh dream day, ultra vivid scene (headlining) and grant lee buffalo, so we drove up with jesse's girl (ha!) and waited outside the venue for them to show up (not creepy, as we had told them in l'ville we'd go to the cinci show and they were like "come early, we'll get you in"). so they show up, we help with load-in, and basically hang out for the rest of the night. we go record shopping at a couple spots around vine street. we go out to dinner at a local restaurant, where we hear a hippie guitarist dude murder buddy holly songs (i remember the meal being good tho). we get back to the club and they're sharing a dressing room with eleventh dream day, which was great because at that point wink o'bannon (from louisville) is playing guitar for them, along with bundy k. brown. bundy and doug mccombs tell us about their new band called tortoise, they have a debut 7" coming out in a few months, we should look for it. we hear horror stories from their merch people about ultra vivid scene's tour manager, who has ripped down come and eleventh dream day's t-shirts because they were "displayed too prominently." we hear grant lee buffalo, who are awful, and are afraid the roof will collapse because the stage is above it, and grant is apparently stomping with all his might to his own songs (to an audience of like 50). come play, eleventh dream day play, they're great. we all watch part of uvs, and make fun of the bass player who is wearing a vest with no shirt on underneath and like penny loafers with synthetic socks. show's over, we bid adieu and depart for the drive back to the 'ville. saw come about another 10 times after that, got to be friends with chris brokaw. apparently he played in williamsburg last weekend but i had to miss it because of work, dammit.

college (taken from another thread): ...the time sebadoh played with the bunnybrains at tramps and i got backstage and drank too much and got hit on by some severely older woman who kept talking about todd rundgren then was ripped at the side of the stage, drunk, telling the security guy to fuck off for calling tara o'neil a bitch. finally found my date later (who stopped talking to me after that night) and went with sebadoh to their hotel suite (provided by conan and nbc) to smoke some bowls only to pass out on their couch and stupidly be late to meet my parents back upstate for "parents weekend" was pretty fun too.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 March 2005 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The third or fourth time I saw Bis (in as many months) was at the manchester roadhouse. Me and my friend tim got talking to them as they were packing up their gear, and they were dead excited cos they'd just signed to wiija. And we ended up going backstage with them and getting wrecked. I guess it was probably big fun, but I don't rememeber. Cos I was wrecked.

I also got drunk with Symposium once, after one of their shows in dundee somewhere, cos I'd gone there with a friend of the drummer. They were nice but dull. I don't rmemeber any of their names now. Or songs. I lost a jumper there though.

dateline-
pittsburgh, march 2001- the now defunt Beehive in Oakland
show- SM&the jicks, pretty soon after they started the tour.

talking to SM's grrl(whatsername, the author one-heather?), who was overly flirty and brandishing a bottle of jack (green label, blech!) and winking too much. SM givin me 'the stare', must've thought i was out fer his chick. little did he know that i had brought a date and had introduced her to Nasty, who was beyond nice and chatted the entire evening, even shunning beer due to driving duty!! after finishing the set he walked off stage and gave me the 'shoulder bump' as if to say 'step off, son'. oddly, he bounced off me and i laughed and told him good show. he frowned.

then, talked to Nasty more about what was up with him...

eedd, Friday, 4 March 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

nasty is a great guy! mlk has always been a bit testy, obv.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i've yet to see SM when he WASN't being testy...4 shows, all w/ him being pissy.

everybody else around him seems happy, just not him...

oh, and here's another from the vault-
dateline-
Lancaster, PA- chamelon club
show-reverend horton heat
hung with jimbo at length till some skinhead "Oi!" fella stumbled over and started making fun of us. at which point jimbo asked him to leave us be or step outside with him. the skin retracted statements of ethnic origin and sheepishly stumbled away. jimbo, being the gracious fella, demanded 3 more pitchers of beer to wash away the nasty taste left behind. mr. heath then came by and said some hello's with 2 lovely ladies on his hands. quite the scene.
mr. churilla was off "doing gawd knows what".

eedd, Friday, 4 March 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never been backstage :/

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

oh another funny one post-college (which will prolly make people dislike me even more): will oldham show at lounge ax (rip) summer of 1999. speed to roam, dudes i know from l'ville, are one of the opening bands. place is packed, totally hot and sweaty and gross. i'm in the back by the bar, have no plans to come up front, but pete from str grabs me and is like "come up front to watch the show" and so i grab his shoulder and he basically elbows his way through the tightly packed, irritable crowd to go to the "backstage" at lounge ax which is basically a roped off area to the right of the stage in full view of the audience with like enough room for 4-5 people with a water cooler that only "band people" are allowed to use. i think it's me, him, maybe azita (who stumbles on stage at some point to give will a cigarette or something) and dan k. the entire crowd wants to kill us, not just the ones pete's jostled. awesome.

god my life's been weird.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was 17, I met a guy on Bart going to the same Cure show in Oakland that I was going to who said his dad worked sound for the band and could get me backstage. He did get us backstage and I met his father but I was both starstruck and bored in the presence of the band and left somehow disappointed.

ooooo. my age of chance story ...

went on bustrip with leeds hometown gang to see AOC in London (when it was called town and country)at their big album gig ..

the show was ace as expected.

aftershow/backstage - Chrissy 'Madness' Boy was @ Bar .. i used to be a big fan and i wrote to Chrissy several times (once a sad fanboy ..) - the man wrote back.

so now i had my chance .. introduced myself ..'oh i remember you' he said, 'bollox' says i .. at which point he describes the paper i used to write on (papermark was image of my parents pub .. pre-email days!) .. damn. one of my all time heros is namechecking me !

i hardly saw the AOC crew at all .. but then again i knew they'd be @ Morrisons on monday morning.

needless to say i kept in touch with Chris (twas the bands fallow years) that is up until Madstock .. and now i have been pushed aside ..

still twas a seriously lifetime highlight of a night ..

my fave band on top form, and a childhod popstar hero .

here's my pete yorn story:

about a couple years ago, when that record with the smiths cover on it was out, he did an instore at my old job. pete took a bunch of pr0n mags and went into one of the handicapped employee bathrooms for a while. when he exited the bathroom, my fellow co-workers discovered a couple empty bottles of hotel-sized hand lotion and the mags. one could only guess what "pete porn" was up to....

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

not to sound too 'been there done that' (i'm sure many ILMers as well), but I've been in lots of these situations over the years and it's really, really NO BIG DEAL.

However, I'll swallow my pride for a minute and admit that seeing Lee Ranaldo and Michael Hurley meet for the first time (at the Cooler in NYC almost ten years ago), literally shaking hands across my face, was a pretty historic deal for me.

Also, as an itsy bitsy shit, I drank a beer with Scott Ian from Anthrax backstage at the Maiden / Anthrax / Testament show while my dad and my friend Scott sat up in the bleachers, oblivious. That's what they get for not moshing / snooping around. I walked right past a life size "Eddie" prop from Maiden's set. Scott, from what i remember, was awesome.

Pete Yorn and his band ran a train on me onstage at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. several years ago. Weird thing was, I never even bought a ticket to the show... I just came to, straight out of a blackout, and his drum tech was giving me the Arabian Goggles while Pete kept asking me if I was "ready for some hardcore Yornography."
I remember crying, and feeling really thirsty. The whole thing made the local news.
Oh, wait, shit, you said BACKstage story.

When I was a senior in high school I "met" Kurt Cobain after Nirvana played the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor in 1990 with Tad opening up. That was probably the first time I'd had contact with a musician I liked. Me and my buddy weren't even old enough to get in (it was a 21+ show), but we snuck in somehow. After the show we just stayed and milled around, and eventually the band starting loading out gear, and I just went up to Cobain and shook his hand and told him that I was a big fan. I think I also mentioned something about all of their released material perfectly fitting on one side of a 100 minute tape. I don't know why I said that, just some drunken random thing, he just kind of nodded or something/

The next year was my first year in college and Sonic Youth were touring Goo with Red Kross opening up. I had this good friend who was a year older and had graduated the year before, and promptly got the fuck out of the midwest and moved to California. Somehow he ended up rooming with this professional roadie dude. The professional roadie dude got the Red Kross gig, and they needed an extra body so my friend went along. I hooked up with them when the tour hit Chicago. It was fun, I remember them playing some prank on the MacKenzie bros at their hotel room, but I don't remember what it was. I got to meet SY and hung out in their backstage area a bit before the show, which was just a huge thrill. They were gods to me back then.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ha! McDonald, not MacKenzie. don't know how I did that, thinking of Bob & Doug, I guess. I was never the biggest fan of that band, to be honest. I guess it's supposed to be two 'd's in Redd too.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 5 March 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"hardcore Yornography"!!!

scout (scout), Saturday, 5 March 2005 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I went backstage at an Avalanches show last week. I didn't really have much to say to them, but they had a bevvy of dancers and drummers from Senegal who were very chatty.

Seuss, Saturday, 5 March 2005 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
I volunteer for my campus' radio station, and we hosted a Shins concert a few months ago, so I went to help set stuff up and was given a stage pass. I got a lot more of a kick out of walking around backstage and feeling important than I did from the music. A bunch of us went into the snack/spread room, and I think we saw one of the Shins but we quickly realized that none of us knew what they looked like so to this day I'm still not sure. Great story.

musically (musically), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Most of my time spent backstage has been either uncomfortable or working. I do remember that one of the best things about setting up soundboards for a pal's band was that I got to drink underage. That was my first beer at a bar...
