tom vek - hero or zero ?

not sure if this is well timed ..

but there is a lot of buzz, (apparently) about Tom Vek (http://ww.tomvek.tv), and yet no ILM threads that i can find ..

is this cos no-one else likes the beck-styled lo-fi post punk vibe .. or has it not yet hit the right doorsteps yet ?

i am awaiting delivery of a playgroup remix of oneof his tracks, and the album was on constant rotation yesterday.

anyone else .. or you all to MIA'd up ?

onwards !

I like the record a lot. At times, he seems like the Bizarro World version of James Murphy.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

i have absolutely no idea what the frag Bizarro World is

.. but i just know you are spot on with the connection.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

yeah i like the record, it's got a real nice consistent feel to it that just hits the mark for me. just like a younger, more 'now' beck. whether that's a good thing or not only time will tell.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

(Bizarro World is an old Superman comic book reference, where everything is both the same and entirely different)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

'if i could change my mind' is a stomping track

is the album out?

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

i'm kind of stunned that people have been shitting themselves over something that sounds like a less-inspired beck (and he's irritating enough in the first place).

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

there are people shitting themselves over this?! I had to listen to the single for the Stylus singles jukebox and it was one of the most unlistenable things I'd ever heard.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

I haven't been 'shitting myself' but I thought he was brilliant live. There's a lot of it about - that early Talking Heads meets Gang of Four thing - but he seemed to do it with some style and sparky tunes.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I think he's better than Kasabian but that says little little.

this album is fantastic! i was surprised at how strong it all is. love the guy's voice. comparing this to beck is bizarre, i can't even faintly see how the comparison fits.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 11 July 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the Beck comparison is bs.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 11 July 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

i don't mean to derail further but i had no idea beck was considered post punk!??? this cannot be.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 11 July 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

"post-quality" more like, ho ho

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 11 July 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

The single called "CC whatever whatever" is really good. Love that drum sound.

i read an interview where he said something like "i guess people compare me to beck because we are both just one guy and our names rhyme"

i think his stuff is great, been listening to it excessively lately and still like it.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

Slags, slates etc.

I bought Nothing But Green Lights today and I like it. The repetitive keyboard part is a bit out of time, and it all sounds very fresh for something so derivative- just listening to the remixes now... the Clor one brings out the new order in him...

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

... and the Phones one brings out the disco.. nice delayed drums.

It's just Once in a Lifetime without the chorus, really, isn't it?

Nice sleeve, though.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

Tom Vek is TOTALLY James-Murphy-ing it bigtime on that song, but the Digitalism mix of "Nothing But Green Lights" is absolutely brilliant. It's a total LCD Soundsystem rip-off track, but it's a brilliant LCD Soundsystem rip-off track.

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

(sure, LCD are a montage of "rip-off"s themselves, but this track is basically a singular mockuo of that montage.)

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, yes. But I thought he was ripping off straight from the source, Mark E Smith.

The lyric isn't especially great, though, is it?

I sense that ilm collectively shrugs it's shoulders at the Tom Vek.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, yes. But I thought he was ripping off straight from the source, Mark E Smith.

It's an affectation but not a rip off, I think. Mark E. Smith has a trademark sloppiness to his suffixes-"ah" that can't be replicated.. Murphy's decay a lot faster and sound more youthful and exhuberant. (Not to say Murphy doesn't sound sloppy at times, and not to say MES doesn't sound exhuberant at times, at least back in the day, but anyway..)

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, Vek's affectation sounds a lot closer to Murphy than MES.

'If You Want' is ok

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 23 December 2005 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

The album is hit or miss.. I'd stick to the singles.

dali madison's nut (donut), Friday, 23 December 2005 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

solid debut, I'd say.

Beck comparison is shallow.

If You Want bassline is total heat. Album has at least 4 solid singles.

Caught him on tour after his drummer bailed out. Played the entire first half of the show singing whilst banging the skins himself.

my conclusion would be: talented guy, with obvious potential.

buboclot, Friday, 23 December 2005 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

album is fantastic.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 23 December 2005 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

This guy's strength in the singles department is another thing he shares with New Order. Good idea; go for the singles. But it's also those same hit-&-miss early albums that are usually the more distinctive, strident and plain interesting to surface in a discography.

Some of We Have Sound's staged flaws can be a bit obvious and flat, but they're more than made up for by Vek's brightly coloured palette of noisy emotions, making his work such an appealingly flamboyant mess that I'll know it's one to keep an ear on for some time.

I still really like "CC (You Set the Fire in Me)" but never want to hear anything else in case it kills the magic.

Hongroe Like the Wolf (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 22 March 2009 13:57 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

So is he recording under a different name or did he join someone's band or something? Because there aren't even any vague proclamations of him working on his follow up anymore like there were as recently as a year ago. I'm giving up.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 June 2010 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

Listened to We Have Sound only last week, as it happens! Still sounds interesting and danceable.

I seem to remember an interview about five years ago wherein he said something like "I've got a great deal with my label where they will never hassle me for a new album, ever, so I'm just going to take my sweet time about it."

Maybe that's just what he's doing...

From Zane Lowe (ugh) Twitter:

Tom Vek is back! New album 'Leisure Seizure'. New single, 'A Chore' first play next Monday at 7:30pm on R1. We are very happy about this.

Not sure if excited is the right word but it's been the better part of a decade so I'm interested to hear what he's been up to.

This is fucking knobrot. I don't normally complain about "weird singing" but this is just plain BAD SINGING. Every track sounds like a Marfan syndrome sufferer bashing a bunch of bean cans in a shed accompanied by a man-donkey who insists on guzzling hooffuls of marbles every time he tries to sing.

I haven't felt so repelled by a piece of music in years. How anyone can take it seriously, let alone enjoy it is beyond me.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 09:50 (fourteen years ago)

Is that a reference to the singer from Deerhunter?

She Got the Shakes, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 10:23 (fourteen years ago)

no. i don't have any interest in deerhunter

hi dere late pass; I am just hearing "C-C (You Set The Fire In Me)" for the first time via internet radio and it is fucking GREAT

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

I think you'd probably like most of the first album, DJP.

I'm still formulating an opinion of the new one.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

I liked several tunes off the first album, but 'A Chore' doesn't do anything for me.

Que sera sera... (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

Dan Perry's the last person I would expect to like this for some reason.

broodje kroket (dog latin), Thursday, 19 May 2011 10:01 (fourteen years ago)

Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip without the "humour". "A Chore" lives up to its name.

broodje kroket (dog latin), Thursday, 19 May 2011 10:01 (fourteen years ago)

Dan Perry's the last person I would expect to like this for some reason.

you saw how apeshit I went over These New Puritans last year, right

anyway I am annoyed that all of my usual avenues for that first album are turning up shady resellers

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Thursday, 19 May 2011 15:54 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah but These New Puritans (who I'm not convinced by, but w/e) seem to have more going on, plus they've got that industrial EBM thing. This sounds like someone who got rejected from the worst NMEindie band circa 2007 decided to get hold of the shittest drum machine he could find and sing over it while regrouting his bathroom.

Hilariously bad. Sounds more dated than his debut perhaps.
