The official(ish) thread for The Duke Spirit

So the new album's been floating around on slsk since last November (with no word yet on an official release date), they put out the "Lion Rip" single last month (after a couple others + a 2003 ep), and now they're touring with Mercury Rev in March and showcasing at SXSW too. The hype originates here!

Someone I know elsewhere said the band sounds like Martina Topley-Bird fronting Spiritualized. Yeah, maybe. But Spiritualized can and will be boring, and the Duke Spirit haven't done that yet.

...weird indeed that no release has been announced as of yet for "cuts across the land". 5 or 6 months [i'm sure it has been longer than nov.] for a promo to be floating around seems an awfully long time. if it ever gets released it will be on a lot of end of the year lists.

Well, it's a bit different from the leaked version. Some songs have been removed and others have been added, but it's still one of the stronger albums I've heard this year.

I'm glad they added "Love Is An Unfamiliar Name" to it. What a great single.

Jesus, talk about being slept on, I just got this album and it's easily the best rock release of 2005.

Anyone else heard the new one, Neptune, yet? They really sound like The Sounds on much of this, I'm not too impressed after first listen.

i really enjoyed that first record, i should definitely have a listen to the later stuff

i have a single from when they (well, some of them) were called solomon, it's good but it's very different to the duke spirit releases

"Love Is An Unfamiliar Name" is the last really good thing they did, and looking upthread I see that happened in 2005 (wow, time flies).

They worked on the last UNKLE record, but Neptune was a bummer, and now there's some kind of Target-exclusive compilation of tracks from the first and second albums that may or may not make some kind of ripple with the masses (my money's on "may not").
