Just when the world finally seemed safe from the teen-pop bands of the '90s, the Backstreet Boys have announced a new album and tour.
The road show brings them to small halls, a far cry from the arenas, or even stadiums, the Backstreet Boys played at their peak. The group kicks off the tour with a New York date at the 800-capacity Irving Plaza on March 21.

Even in a diminished state, the Backstreet Boys could certainly play a larger hall than this. But when big acts play tiny clubs, the primary purpose is to create buzz. Several years ago, U2 played Irving Plaza to generate heat for its "All That You Can't Leave Behind" CD.

The Backstreeters plan to play 13 club dates in all, throughout the Northeast and Midwest, ending April 10 in St. Louis.

The group's new, as-yet-untitled album is slated for a summer release. It's their first release in five years, since 2000's "Black and Blue."

Though that album went multiplatinum, pop trends have moved on. And it's always hard for a group to reestablish itself after leaving the limelight.

Tickets to the Irving Plaza show went on sale yesterday for $60.

Neil Tennant once said he didn't really LOVE pop acts until they were on their way down the dumper...oh the TRAGEDY of it all.

Neil is a brilliant man.

Miccio, all is full of love, though.

more gap band, less boyz II men (save "Motownphilly," obv)

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

they should play Electric Six's "Jimmy Carter" as they go on stage

The first surfaced this year covering a Beach Boys ballad = I think you might be out of luck

YAWN. BOO. I wanna hear another "Larger Than Life"

I'm envisioning the lads in an autobiographical Broadway "jukebox" musical next, eventually coming to a dinner theatre near you.

It reminds me of when NKOTB -- as they formally renamed themselves -- released an album and toured smaller theaters in 1993. The moment had passed.

Many Coloured Halo to thread (heh heh).

Oh man, I loved that MTV Cribs episode wherein one of the BBs showed his bedroom. You could basically peer through the fishtank located between the bedroom and living room. They have to take superasshole Aaron - Goatse has nothing on him - on tour with them.

So Nick will have to retire from Offshore Racing. Bummah.

If they're lucky they might get some sort of Hanson-level afterlife going for them.

One of the songs is a cover of the Eagles' "Best of My Love."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 5 March 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

If I remember correctly, I reviewed their first U.S. album for my campus newspaper. The review went something like:

"Yada yada NKOTB yada yada Cycle of nostalgia get shorter every year yada yada New Jack Swing yada yada Color Me Badd with better drum programming yada yada"

I'm paraphrasing, of course. It was essentially one of those "Well, for what it is, it could certainly be a lot more horrifically terrible" reviews that you get every time a j-school kid condescends to review a pop record. I'd like to think I've gotten my head out of my ass since then, because BSB made some classic singles.

NO THEY FUCKING DID NOT!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 5 March 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

If you can ignore the lyrics, "Quit Playing Games With My Heart" and "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" are fine vocal efforts. The former is still one of my favorite pop singles of the late '90s.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 5 March 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

"Quit Playing Games With My Heart," "Backstreet's Back," "Larger Than Life" and "I Want It That Way" are ace.

Alright!
