So, I'm seeing Motley Crue on September 11th

Ironically the anniversary of another great disaster.

Seriously though, the little woman is Crue crazy, and really wanted to go, so Roger The Sucker went and bought tickets today. They were my first favorite band, so seeing them live is kinda full circle for me, gotta say it's gonna be a trip, hope they play some old shit - first two and half records kick ass - maybe Mars'll die onstage or something historic

i'd bet on something histrionic

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 March 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

actually never mind. their new single is a fucking Simple Plan cover and drama isn't exactly Vince's ace in the hole

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 March 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

there will be special effects though

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 March 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

just like battlefield earth

I've never been a fan of the band, though their book is definitely worth reading - never thought I'd say that about Motley Crue. It's probably the best account of rock/roll hedonism and depravity outside of Nick Kent's "The Dark Stuff" (which is f**ng essential).

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Sunday, 6 March 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

I bet the tour will implode before it reaches that date, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 6 March 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

you may be right

We just found out they're playing here in Sacramento at Raley Field on July 27th. I've never seen them live, but I was a HUGE fan in High School. I said we should check it out, but if the tix are too expensive then we'll blow it off. No dice. Apparently we're going come Hell or high water. He's seen them a couple of times, and knows full well how much they suck (both live, and newly reunited)...he just wants me to share in the joy of suckness so he can say 'I told you so'. Ain't love grand?

By 'he' I mean my husband. Duh.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 7 March 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

I saw them on the Generation Swine reunion tour, and it was dire.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 March 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

the tix were pretty cheap, considering - my two aisle seats in the middle of the stadium came to $76 w/ tax

is TommyLand any good? Is it NEARLY as good as the Crue book?

Right now I'm reading this great book about the 86 Mets (the only baseball team I was ever a fan of) and it's definitely along the lines of The Rules - total hedonism / stupidity. It's called The Bad Guys Won.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 7 March 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

oops i meant The Dirt - shit, who wrote The Rules?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 7 March 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

fuck motley crue. i saw them a handful of years ago (with the gal from hole on drums but vince, nikki and mick in tact) and they sucked.
then i saw vince open for poison and he sucked.
they're trying so hard to become some sort of "'rock' institution" a la kiss. vince can't sing worth a shit and they're so flagrantly trying to capitalize on the (never ending?) '80s cash-ins that i'm embarrased for them.
they're not even "motley crue," they're a parody of. like, what "motley crue should sound/be like." ya know -- we were so fucked up in the day. man.

aa, Monday, 7 March 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

as an asterisk: i know '80s crap metal' fans are few and far between in this forum but i'm one of them. legit.
the halen reunion last year sucked too. but i got me tickets for sammy hagar (with mikey) for the 'cinco de cabo' tour and it will slay halen.

ps -- gbv rules though.

in a bid to get laid, I went to see the Crue in 1989. I think Warrant opened. The girl I went with, the one who gave me the ticket and hinted that I was going to get some action, got me in the door of the arena and then told me my tix were in the balcony and hers were on the floor. She wasn't wearing a bra, BTW. Needless to say, I sat with a bunch of stoners who knew every damn word and went home alone once they played "Home Sweet Home." Correction: I went to a nearby bar and got shitfaced with some people I didn't know. Then I went home alone.

Tommy's drum stunt that year was the one that came out over the audience and revolved.

don weiner, Monday, 7 March 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

first concert i ever went to was motley crue on the theater of pain tour, loudness opened. i think at the time that i thought it was awesome but it probably was not. my oldest brother spent the night getting stoned and then drove me and my other brother homw. i wore the tour tee-shirt under my school uniform.

tommy lee's drums only went up on a 90 degree angle when i saw them.

It's a good show. Really good show actually. Vince still sucks and Mick looks like he could die any second, but ... it's a good show.

Roger will be happy with the first hour of the show ... ALL from the first two albums.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

by my count ... SIX songs from Shout At the Devil

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

[flashes horns]. That's all the convincing I need then. Their suckiness is kind of a given, but if they're doin' Too Fast and Shout, then I'm there.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

It still wounds me deep in my heart that Killing Joke are opening dates for them on the UK leg of their tour. Yes, the `Joke were approached by the `Crue, and yes, they were offered a stupid crazy amount of money, and yes, it's a chance to play a larger audience than they're used to -- but fuck. I cannot see Killing Joke really converting any aging Motley Crue fans at this stage in the game. It's going to be ugly.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the crowd was pretty old tonight actually. I don't want to, you know, give away any SPOILERS or anything ... but Tommy's solo bit is basically triggering a bunch of digital samples and, um, attempting some sort of low-rent Autechre, LIVE Tommy Lee style. The reaction was pretty lukewarm. Still, the show is a lot of fun. There are a couple surprises in the early part of the set, song-selection-wise.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

The reaction was pretty lukewarm.

I remember Tommy playing some syruppy piano ballad when they debuted material from the abortive Generation Swine at Roseland about ten years ago, and it went over like a lead balloon. Nikki actually chastised the crowd "Dudes, he's singing about his wife, you need to be cool!"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

"You need to be cool!". That's priceless...
