Recording of Zebra being eaten by vulture, taped from the inside.... does this exist? (The Chris Watson Thread)

Seriously, this was an ILM oriented soulseek conversation I had some months ago about some guy who set up recording equipment inside a carcass and taped a vulture eating the damn thing.
I'd like to hear this. Anybody have any clue what I'm talking about?

Didn't Chris Watson do this on one of his sound albums?

Guymauve (Guymauve), Monday, 7 March 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

xpost: Like seriously, or not?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 March 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it is a Chris Watson track- it's really cool- he placed a microphone on either side of the dead zebra's rib cage and gets its belly to act as a kind of soundtrap- there are buzzing fly noises and the occasional vulture honks sound *a lot* like saxophones- it's incredible.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 7 March 2005 07:26 (twenty years ago)

It's on "Outside the Circle of Fire", on Touch/Ash.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 7 March 2005 07:26 (twenty years ago)

holy fuck, sounds amazing. i really need to delve into Watson's world a bit more..

Yes, and it is meant to be heard on headphones. (Binaural recording.)

i saw this guy on TV a few weeks ago talking about recording this. i guess it's his big rock-star story.

I know a guy who swears by the recording of contact mics frozen into blocks of ice which is then allowed to slowly thaw, crack and melt.

Oilyrags, Friday, 16 March 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

The ice block CD is by my friend Collin Olan. It's a 3" CD called rec01, long out of print on Apestaartje. Pretty interesting recording, I know someone who is obsessed with it too.

That ice-recording reminds me: Any of you ever heard the sound that metal makes when it comes into contact with dry ice? It screeches!

had a nice build; liked the way it moved from pure field recordings, to recording + voices, to recordings + voice - last one seemed to be several different sound sources intermingled?

also mike from touch records is a character. in a good way, i thought

The ice melting discussion from way up thread made me think of "Concret PH" by Iannis Xenakis. That piece is made of the manipulated sounds of charcoal burning. Definitely "music" that opened my mind to endless possibilities pretty early on.
