Taking Sides: "The Song Remains the Same" by Led Zeppelin vs. "O My Soul" by Big Star

These are essentially the same songs. Big progressive songs leading off BIG 1973 Albums!! Big Star was always so enamoured of Zep. I'm just not sure if the boys had heard Houses by the time they laid down Radio City. I know the two albums are 1973-ers; yeah, probably Big Star had laid down Radio City b4 Houses came out. But still. Gosh, Jody Stephens was always SO john bonhamian! That's why I love him. At 5:35, 'O My Soul' weighs in as the lengthiest Big Star song! Led Zep started their 5th album with a crazy-ass prog song that probably left their fans thinking 'woah'. I think something was in the air back there in 1973. Serious niceness. I like Chilton gettin' all progged-out.

"Song Remains the Same"

"O My Soul" starts off like it's going to be brilliant but never quite gets there.

"O My Soul" is one of my favourite Big Star tracks - it's even got a GROOVE! - but come ON. TSRTS is one of the great Jimmy Page multi-guitar orchestravaganzas, along with Stairway and Achilles' Last Stand and Ten Years Gone.

[Sidenote: Years ago, I remember listening to it while high and being convinced that the first solo was from an uncredited Steve Howe. And another time, talking to an equally-toasted friend, trying to sell him my dumb revelation that TSRTS was the "exact midpoint between the Byrds and Sonic Youth". It made sense(milla) at the time. But this all belongs on another thread.]
