kids from massachusettes

For some reason it seems like every person I meet - my age, that is - from Mass. has music taste that centers around hip-hop, primarily "underground/indie/backpacker" and jam bands. What is it about massachusettes?

Worchester has got a lot of Emo/Hardcore stuff, as well as a small dedicated group of IDM/Noize freaks. Boston is mostly rock bands while Allston and Jamaica Plain do more indie rock. Ironically, I don't know many people into hip-hop!

There is a growing Techno/House scene in Boston though! We shall rise! We've got Forced Exposure right over here in our corner!

David (from FE) and I are spinning at the River Gods in Cambridge tonight if anyone is interested...

Yes, jam bands are very popular amongst most of the people I went to college with. Medeski Martin Wood is always a big draw...

right now there's a bunch of good bands in boston that wouldn't be considered hip-hop. and kids seem to like them too.

ho-ag
night rally
the stairs
big bear
soltero

and a recent favorite song of mine covers the topic too

"he said: hey my name is corey. i'm really into hardcore. people call me hard corey. don't you hate these clever people and all these clever people parties."

The Hold Steady, "Hostile Massachusetts"

Yelk Manos, Monday, 7 March 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's not forget Anal Cunt's "Everyone in Allston Must Be Killed"

"There is a growing resurgent Techno/House scene in Boston [and Cambridge]."

Lest we forget the once burgeoning '98-'02 scene fueled in part by Redlight's Wednesdays and Randy's Sundays at the Phoenix.

Don't Call It A Comeback (nader), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Those are all blips on the radar - New England is jam band and classic rock territory, hell yeah.

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That won't stop me from blasting "No Tengo Dinero" by Righeira

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Long live the insurgency!

In Boston, Not Iraq (nader), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Soltero and Night Rally are fantastic. Ponies In The Surf are real good too. There's also a lot of bands that do 70s-era Jonathan Richman proud, I'd say. Fuck the jam bands, tons of good music comes out of MA.
