If I like Akufen, Matthew Dear and Secondo then what else will I like

I'm talking chopped up dance music that still has a groove. I'm really loving Akufen's Deck the House and Secondo's We got it like that. I'm checking out some stuff on perlon (e.g pantytec's elasto babe) but I'm looking for stuff that's at the disco end of the spectrum rather than that techno end. Any tips? Is Force Inc. what I'm looking for.

So many labels, so many records......

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

todd edwards!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

theo parrish, jackson, and try some old disco edit 12"es by El Cuco on labels like XXX or Castro Productions

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

all i know by jackson is that killer M83 remix - what else should i seek out?

rajeev, Monday, 7 March 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Duncan Powell - "Something Wrong"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

anything on the cadenza label

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Thanks!

Todd Edwards is aname I came across on one of the Akufen threads (I think). slsk is being less than useful at finding things I can check.

x-post

I

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

"radio gaga" is a jackson track you should look into. and you must've heard of this villalobos guy, right?

xpost - spencer, have you got a decent quality copy of that powell track? i want it real bad. REAL bad.

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

try some robag wruhme too i think.

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Don't know hwy my last post was truncated. It should have said

"I love that M83 mix!"

I have heard of that villalobos guy. I am on the case

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

xxpost, I have a streaming radio1 rip which is acceptable. I'll try to do a yousendit.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

suPERLONgevity!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Also anything by Villalobs and/or Luciano

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Todd Edwards is what you really need, obviously.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

i got a rip, actually, spencer! so don't worry bout it (tho everyone else should hear it too i guess).

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Matthew Herbert: Wishmountain, Bodily Functions, probably others but those are the ones I know best. not quite the same but good still.

Todd Edwards is great, too, as everyone says

W i l l (common_person), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

you only really need one todd edwards track though. maybe two. you can imagine the rest from there.

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Has the air raid siren and "radio1 exclusive" bits, but
here it is.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Also, saying you only need one or two tracks is like saying one MBV track is "enough".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

i only really love 'to here knows when' so that logic is fine by me. btw, if i had to pick a couple of edwards's's: the 'shut the door' dub and, oh, the st. germain 'alabama blues' remix.

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

For Todd Edwards, I'd recommend *all* of these CDs:

Prima Edizione
Full On Volumes I & II
New Trend Sounds 2004 and I think there's a new one for this year.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

i only really love 'to here knows when' so that logic is fine by me.

Diff'rent strokes etc.

Also, there are a ton of sublime remixes: St Germain, Phoenix, Hakan Lidbo etc etc.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

ok, I have a bunch of stuff to check while I am heading towards sleep tonight and I am pretty excited. Got some more akufen, that st germain mix, some dimbiman,

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 7 March 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Either of the two releases by Hand on the Plow

Either of Brooks albums (+ 12"s)

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

I have red tape by brooks and I like it. Hand on the plow I will check.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

My favourite Hand on the plow track = Beckett & Taylor's Lies

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Some of Jeff Samuel's stuff, while not as choppy, still has a nice propulsive swing to it. Another great option would be any of the 12"s on the newish label Frankie (including a Jeff Samuel 12"). All of them are stone corkers, esp #s 2-6.

Also look into the Circus Company label, maybe, and related stuff by folks like Krikor. It's clunkier than Dear, Akufen and Secondo, but it's pretty radically cut-up. Finally, for cut-up freakishness par excellence, go for Errorsmith, Soundhack, and their collabo Smith & Hack.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

for anyone interested - here's Todd Edwards' "Heaven", probably my fave track off his recent "New Trend Sounds: Classics, Remixes & Beyond" CD:

http://s22.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1IH266X5T05LX1YLOXZ99MTK8R

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

sooo sweet

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, I have to order this now.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

haha Jeff Samuel told me last night at Michael Mayer (he smoked!) that Kompakt is going to soon make its entire catalogue available for download!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

holy shit!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

not just Kompakt, but the labels they distribute, too.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

I keep reading 'Akufen' as 'A-fuken' as in what Method Man is screaming during the intro to Method Man on 36 Chambers.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Duncan Powell - "Something Wrong"

oh wow, this song is amazing!

rajeev (rajeev), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Errorsmith, Soundhack, and their collabo Smith & Hack

I *LOVE* this stuff already.

So excited by this thread

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

So, from what I hav heard so far I like the following

Akufen's deck the house, rock the house, + crack haus mix
Villabos - asbalduin
smith n hack - to our disco friends
dimbiman - koppchen
akufen - red skies

and I am very grateful to you all for helping out with this.

The edwards/ st germain mix I'm having a bit of trouble with as it does still sound like a lot of housey stuff I don't really like.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm looking for stuff that's at the disco end of the spectrum rather than that techno end.

Did you mean it the other way around?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

Actually, no.

But fuck it.

:)

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Well, the things you like seem to be more on the techno side of things. If we'd have known you had a dislike for "a lot of housey stuff," I don't think you would have had so many Todd Edwards recommendations.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Ah, OK. I'm still trying to figure this stuff out (as you may be able to tell). I think it's the sparseness and the choppiness that I really like. The st germain thing has a bit too much. I still want things to be danceable and to have some kind of melodic intent (the pantytec thing failed, for me, in this regard) but for the groove and the melody to be revealed during the song, rather than being constituent parts of it from the outset.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm about to check the todd edwards track that was linked to upthread in addition to some duncan powell, narcotic syntax, Markus nicolai and soulphiction. Will let you know how I get on.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 10 March 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Check out Moodyman too- he might be too housey for you but it seems that is up in the air.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 10 March 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

xpost
Haha, I'm thinking you will like things called "Narcotic Syntax" and "Markus Nicolai" more than you will "Todd Edwards" and "Duncan Powell"!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

ah, and how could i forget, the whole goddamn musik krause catalog.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 10 March 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

I heard bits & bobs of moodyman a while ago. I need to reinvestigate give my current mindset.

A report -
Todd Edwards - liking Heaven more than the st germian mix
Markus Nicolai - awesome. A bit of a different thing entirely with the acoustic guitar and that sweeeeeeet melody.
Narcotic syntax - didn't like this very much. Too mechanical.
Haven't heard the powell thing yet.

So it seems that what I'm liking fails to fall into the techno / house divide. I think this is a good thing.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 10 March 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Moodymann - "music people" will suit you, I think.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

the only moodyman track I can remember really getting into was the one from silent introduction with the 'what am I gonna do, gonna do, gonna do' sample.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

I am now loving Heaven by mr edwards.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 10 March 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

It's all about "Passion," I love that song! It should be in Katamari Damacy. Just last week I realized that what I thought was the original version of "Bushes" is in fact a relatively obscure mix (the "Yellow Freaks" mix or something), and when I abruptly went and looked for the original I found that I hate it! Or at least, don't care for it too much. To me it sounds like pretty standard San Francisco lounge-house type stuff, like something King Britt might do. Anyway, yes, "Passion" is on the B of my Bushes remix and it's just so sly and lovely, and when it finally - finally - really gets down to boogie it's so naive and joyful and dumb, I love it.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

So, Having just heard superlongevity I can report that the only thing that did it for me in any way (and it was in quite a big way) was Markus N & Nina's Mr. Big Star. The other stuff I found far too clinical.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

that would be superlongevity 3 btw

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

looks like you like house better after all! ha. though really, calling perlon "clinical" seems strange to me - most of that shit is supremely messy. (though i think "superlongevity 3" is a bit disappointing, within the broader scope of the label.)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 12 March 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

There's of course: Daft Punk - "Face to Face" which features both production and singing from Todd Edwards.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 12 March 2005 07:24 (twenty years ago)

I bet you'll like Matthew Dear's "Dog Days" hmmm. And the first Luomo album!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 12 March 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

Errorsmith, Soundhack, and their collabo Smith & Hack

Are any of these still findable on vinyl? The 'soundkit' ep by soundhack is high up there on my wanted list. I guess I could CDJ em if I could find the mp3...

tylero (tylero), Saturday, 12 March 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

rip off artist - pet sounds

twelve, Saturday, 12 March 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

Daft Punk - "Face to Face" I also heard this yesterday. Sometimes, my revulsion at the tastes of the general population has detrimental consequences as, in this instance, it resulted in me missing this awesomeness.

hmmm (hmmm), Saturday, 12 March 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

many of the smith & hack related records are still available at hardwax - i got the "soundkit" ep there last october.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Sunday, 13 March 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

That Duncan Powell track is wonderful!

Tantrum (Tantrum The Cat), Sunday, 13 March 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

So, the stuff that has made it onto the 'buy on vinyl' list from what I have head so far of the above is as follows -

Sprit Catcher - Between Brothers
Todd Edwards - Heaven
Markus Nikolai - Bushes & Just Wanna
Markus N & Nina - Mr Big star
Dimbiman - Koppchen

Plus the that daft punk track.

hmmm (hmmm), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Maybe you should check out Luciano too.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

particularly the amelie remixes, though they're a bit more techy-electro.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 14 March 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

Cool. Will check.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 14 March 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

particularly the amelie remixes, though they're a bit more techy-electro.
-- firstworldman (3...), March 14th, 2005.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I've got nearly everthing by Luciano except those mixes. Would you (or anyone) be willing to swap a few Luciano bits for those mixes? I have Gmail!...i don't know what my Gmail addy is though! Doh. Shit. I'll figure it out if you agree to swap files.

Thanks.

biznotic, Monday, 14 March 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

i have two of them on this computer. i'll yousendit the files later if you can't find your email address.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Hey...my gmail is

bgeoghagan@gmail.com

Thanks,

If there are any Luciano/related tracks you want in exchange, i've ripped all my vinyl to MP3, including the Monne Automne stuff and the 12"s on Bruchestucke.

biznotic, Monday, 14 March 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Do all of you know about this web site:

http://www.adapteri.com/betoni/

It has 68 (!) fully downloadable mixes from very good DJs, and it's all either clicks 'n cuts, microhouse, dub-techno etc. Mostly Perlon / Kompakt / Traum stuff. It's fantastic!

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

That site looks sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. Thanks. Will check tonight.

I've just realised that my post upthread about what's on the vinyl list has been slightly contaminated by stuff I'm checking from the electro house bobbins thread (i.e. the spirit catcher track).

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

those Amalie mixes are not the Amael mixes on Peacefrog with the epic Villalobos mix on the b-side are they? if so, don't bother, i've got that 12", but if they're different...send em on!

biznotic, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

"Amael" is a separate track to the Amelie tracks. One is called "Amelie on Ice" and the other is one of the tracks on Live @ Weetamix but I've forgotten what it's called.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't "Amelie on Ice" sample the piano from the Amelie movie theme?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Yes, and the strings too.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

I discovered last night that Force inc. is really not what i am looking for. I did hear some stuff by luciano on cadenza which really did it for me as I drunkenly walked home.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

Force Inc too techy with a few exceptions.

Some more suggestions:

Metaboman - Easy Woman (Robag Wruhme Mix)
Envoy - Move On (Alex Smoke Dub)
Mike Monday - That Shit Was... (Paradise Soul Mix)
Princess Him - Gone
Metro Area - Pina (Swag's Mas Jugo Dub)
Rework - You're So Just Just
John Tejada - Digital People
Walter Jones - All God's Children (Maurice Fulton Remix)
Koro Osanego - Mini-Klik (Random Factor Remix)
The Streaks - The Feeling (Post Rave Dub)
Sami Koivikko - Byrthe; Hermonik Lost
Jeff Bennett - Last Breath; Dub This!
Sensual Physics - Sense Order
Style Of Eye - Back To Basic (this especially!)
Glowing Glisses - On The Bridge; Pumas Don't Worry
Problem Kids - I Will Lead
Bucci - Dude
Dirty Minds - Death Of Brian
Brooks - Wondering; You See (Who She?); Love's Song (Repeat & Fade)
Steve Bug - That's What I Like (Fuck A Duck Mix)
Jan Jelenik Avec the Exposures - If's And's & But's
John Spring - Do You Like That?; Strange (2005 Mix)
Super_Collider - Darn (Cold Way O' Lovin'); You Loosen Me Human
Random Inc - Meets Anton Qubikov @ Moscovia

This all covers a pretty broad range, but it's united by the house format and sexy but intricate and/or quirky programming.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

perfect. Thank you very much.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

This thread has far exceeded my expectations! Great stuff.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

I completely and utterly agree. I love teh internet.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

best luciano cadenzas = 1 (orange mistake) and 4 (funk excursion).
6 (bomberos) is really good too but it's a lot more relaxed.

a, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I have orange mistake. It's so unassuming and so ridiculously powerful once it gets going. I really like tracks that avoid changing in a bombastic way but that just gradually put lots of stuff together until you're totally taken into a groove that you weren't expecting to emerge.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

hi there hmmm (and everyone else)! since you enjoyed the last one i posted, here's another Todd track - "One Day". this one's from 2000, a collaboration with speed garage dons Tuff Jam.

http://s29.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2O1XZ9II2EQPN2KESH7Y3OK9HQ

Mind Taker, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Awesome, thanks.

I beleive I may have been confusing the luciano track I was raving about with something else. Almost certainly by Mathew Jonson.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 17 March 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

What stuff on this thread sounds most like akufen - deck the house? I want lush, intricate programming and sexy/beautiful melodies with skippy shuffley todd edwards 2-step style beats?

Sleepfir, Thursday, 17 March 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah and lots of choppy vocal hiccups.

Sleepfir, Thursday, 17 March 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

your description sounded more like orange mistake than mathew jonson!

a, Thursday, 17 March 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm getting a bit overwhelmes by all of this. going to try to get my head round what I have over the next few days. I *love* some of the luciano stuff I have heard so far.

hmmm (hmmm), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

seconded: morane "the trick"

its awesome! fits this bill totally: "I'm talking chopped up dance music that still has a groove"

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I head that a couple of days ago and, well, let's just say that I finally got round to figuring out how the repeat function on my iriver works as a result.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 21 March 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

I really wish that Nikolai would pull his finger out and either do another solo album or make a Morane album. It's been 5 years! (actually isn't it amazing that "Just Wanna" came out in 1997!)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 21 March 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

What stuff on this thread sounds most like akufen - deck the house? I want lush, intricate programming and sexy/beautiful melodies with skippy shuffley todd edwards 2-step style beats?

I'd try to help you out but I'm nout sure what you mean by "skippy shuffley 2-step style beats?"

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

'Radio Caca' by Jackson (mistitled 'Radio Gaga' above).

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

On a slight tangent, have a listen to David Last's "Makeout Stakeout", currently up at Moebius Rex. More cut up dub than 2-step, but you might like it. I do.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
yeah, 'radio caca', oops.

anyway: you all NEED to go to www.duncanpowell.co.uk and scroll down and download duncansetmarch05.mp3, for a quality version of "something wrong", if nothing else (and believe me, there's plenty else)

jermaine (jnoble), Sunday, 17 April 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Wow! Thanks so much for the tip!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 17 April 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

tracklisting for that duncan powell mix here

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 17 April 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
that Outlines track Tim mentioned upthread is great! YSI for anyone who wants it:

http://s21.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3KUJ70Z97BSL325DN1Y28L7065

oh and - there was a Duncan Powell set on his page several months ago (it isn't there anymore) without a tracklisting; there was this awesome Todd-ripp on it - can anyone ID?

http://s21.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=17MJZBIC08Z8P3KIU345OA08I8

Mind Taker, Saturday, 25 June 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Both of these are beautiful. I would just email Powell himself and ask!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 25 June 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
and... now?

have you heard kreucht und fleucht?
