Hello, I am planning an 80 minute sequel of sorts to The White Album comprised just of solo Beatles work. So far I've thought up

"Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey"
"It Don't Come Easy"
"Instant Karma"
"My Sweet Lord"
"Imagine"
"Sentimental Journey"
"Nobody Told Me"
"Let 'Em In"
"I've Got My Mind Set on You"
"Band on the Run"
"Oh Yoko"
"Watching the Wheels"
"What Is Life?"
"Mind Games"
"Isn't It a Pity"

If you have any sequencing advice, or comments about song selection (am I missing something?), please share, I'd appreciate it.

Brother Fire, Monday, 7 March 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

God, you could probably make at least five CDR-80s that would be really good. I don't know where to start.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I like "Fab." It would make sense here, too.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Gotta have "Junior's Farm," "Live and Let Die," "Jet," "#9 Dream" and "Photograph."

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

It would probably be the best way to own the handful of good solo George songs too:

Instant Karma!
What is Life?
It Don't Come Easy
The Back Seat of My Car
#9 Dream
Another Day
Nobody Told Me
Jet
I Don't Wanna Face It
Blow Away
Working Class Hero
Remember
Helen Wheels
Fish in the Sand

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

also, please include some yoko tracks because they are awesome

George Harrison had so many good songs. Even the mid-70s ones each had a few good ones. There are lots and lots of good ones on 33 1/3, George Harrison, Somewhere in England, and Gone Troppo.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

75 unheralded post-Beatles McCartney greatz!!

naturemorte, Monday, 7 March 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

how is mccarney II? i want it so bad for some reason (i heard it's all synthy and totally fucked and weird). i've held both a cd copy and a vinyl copy in my hands within the past month and passed on them and then when i go back they're gone.

5. Photograph
6. Lovely Linda
7. Mind Games

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

McCartney II is good, but it was a compromise. When you hear the original double album version (available as a bootleg called The Lost McCartney Album), his intentions are clearer. The weirdo B-sides "Check My Machine" and "Secret Friend" were originally intended for the double album along with more instrumentals and things like "All You Horse Riders" on which Paul shouts instructions to horse riders over...I can't remember exactly...keyboards and such.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

some faves of mine that haven't been mentioned yet:

john, "love"
john, "god"
john, "new york city"
paul, "junk"
george, "ding dong"

and the fact that geir is the only one who's mentioned "jealous guy" and "venus and mars/rock show" means he is right and you are all mental.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

must-haves from George:
"Don't Let Me Wait Too Long"
"Cheer Down"

he's got a lot of buried gems...

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 March 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

The hard part is giving Ringo a roughly equal share

I never tried. I gave his share to Paul instead ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

b-b-but Ringo did "I'm the Greatest!"

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 March 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

What's marvelous about compiling a CDR is that you don't need to hear George's songs back to back. That weedy voice always sounded better surrounded by more, shall we say, august company.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

RINGO TRAX:

You and Me (Babe)
Wrack My Brain
Love Me Do
Back Off Boogaloo
Blindman
Early 1970

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

The original Norwegian single cover for "It Don't Come Easy" is classic btw. A typo led to the cover proclaiming "I Don't Come Easy"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 7 March 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

This is the playlist I made for my ipod a while back called "Best of The Beatles Solo":

Gimme Some Truth
Poor Little Girl
Take It Away
How?
Stand By Me
Jet
Got My Mind Set On You
Mother
When We Was Fab
Maybe I'm Amazed
Nobody Loves You When You're Down n Out
Brainwashed
Watching The Wheels
Let Em In
God
Band On The Run
Jealous Guy
My Sweet Lord

It runs to 78 mins, perfect for your CDR!

musicjohn73, Monday, 7 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Add:

Early 1970 (xpost)
I Found Out
Remember
Give Ireland Back to the Irish (Version)
Let Me Roll It
Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out (Lennon Anthology version)
Stand By Me (xpost)
Listen to What the Man Said
I'm Losing You (Lennon Anthology version)
Handle With Care
This One
Serve Yourself

Dude, what kind of faggot includes the ELO'd "I've got my mind set on you" while leaving out the ragged, incendiary "Just give me some peace?" And if you're going to include 80s songs (if you must), my friend Mr. Martin has three little words for you: "Tug-of-War". Jesus, I'll bet you haven't even heard Brainwashed...

Endicott Peabody, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

no "how do you sleep?"? it's post-beatles and about being post-beatles! and good!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

Smile Away
Run Of The Mill

And yeah, How Do You Sleep is so good.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

'nother Goerger, my favorite: 'Love Comes to Everyone'
great 70's synth among other things

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

I like "I Really Love You" on Gone Troppo more than "Got My Mind Set on You."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

arrow through me

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

I demand "Cleanup Time."

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

Yay to both of those! I demand "Dream Away" from Gone Troppo now for chrissake!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

I phoned up my doctor
To see what's the matter
She said come on over
I said "Do I have to?"

One great start. Ringo:Oh my my

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Dude, what kind of faggot includes the ELO'd "I've got my mind set on you" while leaving out the ragged, incendiary "Just give me some peace?"

ELO'd or not, his Jeff Lynne produced albums were both marvellous. However, "Got My Mind Set On You" is a cover version, and inferior to most of the other material on those two.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Harrison's "Faster" is good too.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

"Cloud Nine" is George's best album, even better than the soggy "ATMP" – proof that he needs either a producer or collaborator.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Man, I'll have to listen to Cloud Nine again, but I never got this perspective that everyone was espousing that it was some great comeback. 33 1/3, George Harrison, and Gone Troppo might all be just as good or better,

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

"33 13" better? I like "This Song" and "Crackerjack Palace," but the production and arrangements curdle what might have been an enjoyable sermonless bunch o' tunes.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

I always liked the production on that...I was going to listen to it again anyway so I'll see what I think.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Not forgetting Beautiful Girl (George's Gone Troppo)

musicjohn73, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

George's 'Here Comes the Moon' has been in my head for the last ten years, so, that one.

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

"Beautiful Girl" is on 33 1/3.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

"Gone Troppo" is possibly George's most underrated work. It is sort of universally considered as the low point of his career, but it is indeed a marvellous collection of typical Harrison songs, coloured in a typical 80s production with lots of synths etc.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Gone Troppo is horseshit

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

I second that! "Wake Up My Love" - ugh.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Geir OTM.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

As for the production issue discussed above, I think the reason that I really like the production on the albums from 33 1/3 through Gone Troppo is that it was really unique and, I think, modern sounding for the time. It's very ethereal -- just this high end cloud of sound which obviously suited George's music very well. Cloud Nine, on the other hand, just sounds like typical mid-'80s production.

And, for what it's worth, I don't think it's as good a collection of songs as any of those four albums from '76-'82. (Maybe as good as Somewhere in England -- I don't know. That album would have been better in its original version.) Amazing that, at the time, Cloud Nine was considered The Big Comeback while Gone Troppo was considered ... uh ... horseshit.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Gone Troppo is kind of like The Beach Boys Love You.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Ringo's Blindman is strange and great.

Snookeroo possibly betrays its Elton John origins too much, but is practically a Dick Clement/Ian La Frenais series ready for the making.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

The Beach Boys Love You might more super solid all of the way through, but Gone Troppo is no slouch and Love You doesn't have any AWESOMELY TRANSCENDENT WHOPPERS like "Dream Away."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

I'll take "Fish in the Sand," "Someplace Else," and "Devil's Radio" over most everything on 33 1/3.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

haha "whoppers" is right

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

The first time I heard the "All Things Must Pass" record, I couldn't believe how much Spiritualized sounded like it. In particular, "Let It Down".

McCartney II is amazing. I dled it cos i heard it was all synthy and weird (which it is in many places) but grew to love even tracks I hated in the past. "Goodnight Tonight" is fantastic disco that never touches the ground.

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

woah -- I just heard "This Song" for the first time in my life. Great tune! I got bored with 'Blues Before Sunrise' -- sometimes that actually does happen to me around the 4th hour, much as I absolutely love the show -- and tuned to my local classic rock station on a lark; they are doing a DEEP CUTS weekend. first cut I heard was "This Song". Awesome! now i've gotta buy '33 & 1/3'

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 13 March 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

i won't rest until 'Love comes to Everyone' is seconded. fucking heathens.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Sunday, 13 March 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

that's another George? I don't know it. but I will buy it on your advice! I will never doubt George again!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 13 March 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

Listen to "Gone Troppo" and begin doubting, Stormy.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 13 March 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

No way. Let the man decide! (And I'll second "Love Comes to Everyone.")

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Thanks everyone for suggestions, even you, Endicott.

I read this this morning. Eerily timely.

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/features/artistlists/e/earlimart-05/

Someone who'd make a list like that without "Imagine" or "Instant Karma" or "Uncle Halsey" is just trying too hard, I say.
