Don't people understand that if this happens Bono's ego will cause an atomic chain reaction that destroys the earth?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 March 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

GOOD GOD have the past few years just been one long string of every powerful entity imaginable patronizing Bono and patting him on the back and giving him cookies and pretending to listen to him out of some bizarre fear that he actually could stir Da Youths against them! DEAR ESTABLISHMENT: You don't have to co-opt Bono! Nobody listens to him anyway!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 7 March 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

the liklihood of this occurring is nil.

john'n'chicago, Monday, 7 March 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

I mean Jesus, next up the Vatican's gonna shortlist him for Next Pope and then some dude will show up on the balcony mugging and going "Are we cool now? Do the kids like us now? TAKE THAT SHIT, SINEAD."

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 7 March 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

This thread was just made worth it by the most obvious post ever in the history of ILX!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 7 March 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

SEE THE OMEGA CODE.

"We've given a lot of thought to who will succeed Colin Powell as Secretary of State. Options include Condoleezza Rice, and, umm, the Black Eyed Peas! Everybody likes the Black Eyes Peas, right?"

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 7 March 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

It's not really surprising, considering that he's the antichrist and all.

Don't Ever Antagonize The Horny (AaronHz), Monday, 7 March 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

it's actually kinda scary how quickly things are falling into place

Dr. Lane: You spend too much time in your codes. The beast and his false prophet get cast out into the lake of fire!

Stone Alexander: (Laughs) Fairy tales! I am the one who controls the outcome of history! I am the one who calls the shots! I'm the one who tells people what to think....what to believe!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 7 March 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Stone Alexander: The Lord? I alone am the Prince of Peace! If there is any other, then show us all a sign! RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!

Prophet #1: IT IS A WICKED AND PERVERSE GENERATION WHO ASKS FOR A SIGN! BUT LIKE CHRIST, YOUR ONLY SIGN WILL BE THIS! DESTROY THESE TEMPLES OF HIS HOLY PROPHETS, AND THE LORD WILL REBUILD THEM....IN THREE DAYS!!

Stone Alexander: It will be my pleasure! (Motions to Dominic, who pulls out a gun and shoots the two prophets on the spot)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 7 March 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Asked to choose between Bono and Paul Wolfowitz, I choose Bono any day.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 7 March 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

i saw omega code in a dollar theater which was later converted into a "megachurch".

Soon, the ultimate personification of the Antichrist will appear on the world scene. Appearing at first as a kind and gentle "peacemaker," he will gradually assert more and more authority. His authority will be enhanced by the false miracles Satan performs through him (Revelation 13:13). Then, the adoring masses will scream with excitement when they see him, and the doctrine of the Antichrist will permeate nearly all of professing Christianity—all except the "little flock" (Luke 12:32) described in Revelation 12:13–17.

Exactly. Haven't these people read American Psycho??? Bono is the Devil!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

I think this would be awesome. Bono is a genius--better than some egghead economist.

Damn Skippy, the last person you'd want running the World Bank is some boring git with a vague understanding of economics.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

See what happens when a rock star lets the irony go a bit too far, and run a bit too long?
The collapse of the world economy.
Should have seen this one coming back with the whole humorless sue the fuck out of Negativland deal...

John Justen (johnjusten), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

I want to see Bono go through a week as a rank-and-file World Bank employee first...preparing loan proposals, coping with the board of directors, getting phone calls from contractors who smell fat contracts...

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

Uh, guys...

Isn't this kind of a spectacular tribute to Bono's effectiveness as a lobbyist?

And isn't he lobbying for stuff we want?

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

"the last person you'd want running the World Bank is some boring git with a vague understanding of economics."

I'm sure there are some people in Argentina who think this is already the case.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Interesting that no one here has endorsed this idea on the likelihood that it would make it difficult for U2 to put out any more records.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

Ooohhh...nevermind my previous objections. If we can prevent further U2 releases, I'm yer number one Bono for anything that keeps him busy supporter. Is there a mailing list or something I can spam my friends with?

John Justen (johnjusten), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

'Another candidate who has surfaced is Carly Fiorina, the recently ousted chief executive of Hewlett-Packard Co.'

if bono becomes head of the world bank, she should replace him a singer of u2

Robin Goad (rgoad), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

On the plus, his chances of being assassinated would increase significantly.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

By chance, I blogged this thought over at Design Observer yesterday:

"I do find the idea of self-consciousness, theatricality and narcissism saving the world a refreshing one. And once I start to think about it, I can see ways in which it might happen. We often act charitably or virtuously because we want to be seen that way -- it's a pose, a self-projection, a part of our image management. Who would quibble, if Bono ended up getting third world debt revoked, for instance, that he'd done it thanks to overweening ego and a mastery of self-projection? Surely the appropriate response would simply be, "Thanks, Bono!"

Momus (Momus), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

The likelihood is nil unless he wants to get U.S. citizenship. Plus, there's the fact they're on tour -- I'd think this was more likely if it was one of their half-decade between-album breaks.

On the one hand, I respect that he's parlayed fame into this. He sometimes annoys me, but I don't think he's entirely in it to feed his ego and get publicity.

On the other ... I dunno, aren't there any candidates who are professional economists? Or at least actually finished college?

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Mick Jagger!

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Who would quibble, if Bono ended up getting third world debt revoked

Which is likely.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahahaha HI JOHN!!!!!!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

The likelihood is nil unless he wants to get U.S. citizenship

Even if he did, his politics will not be accepted by George W. Bush. And a world bank head not approved by Bush will not happen.

Hopefully, the rest of the world will veto Paul Wolfowitz :(

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't see the guy's supposed "effectiveness" as a lobbyist. I see a guy who raised a tiny complaint about something, and I see the people he complained about giving him cookies and sashes and pretending to listen to him. It's the equivalent of like Bush giving Michael Moore an cushy ambassador post and Moore going around saying he's changing things from the inside. Except Bono doesn't actually get anything apart from a feeling of importance.

Didn't y'all read the new Philip Roth? Bono's like a kind and clueless version of the Rabbi.

nabiscothingy, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I thought Bono had been cozying up to Bush administration officials in the name of international assistance.

And the presumption that the head of the World Bank will always be a U.S. citizen, hand-picked by the U.S. Government, is only a tradition based on the United States being the bank's biggest shareholder. It has nothing to do with formal regulations. I remember coworkers saying that if the EU states were to compile their shares, in theory the European Union could overrule U.S. interests on World Bank matters.
