Stone Alexander: (Laughs) Fairy tales! I am the one who controls the outcome of history! I am the one who calls the shots! I'm the one who tells people what to think....what to believe!

Prophet #1: IT IS A WICKED AND PERVERSE GENERATION WHO ASKS FOR A SIGN! BUT LIKE CHRIST, YOUR ONLY SIGN WILL BE THIS! DESTROY THESE TEMPLES OF HIS HOLY PROPHETS, AND THE LORD WILL REBUILD THEM....IN THREE DAYS!!
Stone Alexander: It will be my pleasure! (Motions to Dominic, who pulls out a gun and shoots the two prophets on the spot)

Damn Skippy, the last person you'd want running the World Bank is some boring git with a vague understanding of economics.

Isn't this kind of a spectacular tribute to Bono's effectiveness as a lobbyist?
And isn't he lobbying for stuff we want?

"I do find the idea of self-consciousness, theatricality and narcissism saving the world a refreshing one. And once I start to think about it, I can see ways in which it might happen. We often act charitably or virtuously because we want to be seen that way -- it's a pose, a self-projection, a part of our image management. Who would quibble, if Bono ended up getting third world debt revoked, for instance, that he'd done it thanks to overweening ego and a mastery of self-projection? Surely the appropriate response would simply be, "Thanks, Bono!"

On the one hand, I respect that he's parlayed fame into this. He sometimes annoys me, but I don't think he's entirely in it to feed his ego and get publicity.
On the other ... I dunno, aren't there any candidates who are professional economists? Or at least actually finished college?

Even if he did, his politics will not be accepted by George W. Bush. And a world bank head not approved by Bush will not happen.
Hopefully, the rest of the world will veto Paul Wolfowitz :(

Didn't y'all read the new Philip Roth? Bono's like a kind and clueless version of the Rabbi.

And the presumption that the head of the World Bank will always be a U.S. citizen, hand-picked by the U.S. Government, is only a tradition based on the United States being the bank's biggest shareholder. It has nothing to do with formal regulations. I remember coworkers saying that if the EU states were to compile their shares, in theory the European Union could overrule U.S. interests on World Bank matters.
