I know im not the only one who thinks that thanks to MTV and people like P-Diddy, hip-hop hasnt been getting the representation it deserves. not to say that there arent alot of rappers keeping it real, but on a whole its more bad than good. i was wondering what is there from the rest of the world? i listen too some Looptroop (swedish rappers) and Hilltop Hoods and such, any suggestions would be nice.

PEACE!

I...I don't know what to say.

But peace, yes, peace is good.

The Rough Guide is Brazilian Hip Hop CD comp is mostly good!

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Search Edo Maajka - No Sikiriki immediately, as Croatian rap is GRATE.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

Also, there is damn good Indian dance/hip-hop that I heard on Saturday night at a local nightclub.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

I have a fondness for MC Mabon from Wales (nothing to do with Goldie Lookin' Chain).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Curs Ov Dialekt is good. They have some Macedonian rhymes.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

Some solid Australian hip-hop on the darker tip - Clandestein and Layla (new album just out).

Daara J from Senegal are very good.

Sorry to do you all like this, but it's the only way I know how:

Here's a recent compilation:

X Plastaz have an awesome track on the Rough Guide to African Rap. That comp is pretty good overall.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Talib is holding it down by making unlistenably boring records, yeah.

God will people just stop mentioning MC Solaar already, the guy is stuck in a Gang Starr timewarp from which I think it's clear he'll never escape.

I have one answer, and it's the same one I always give for this question: SAIAN SUPA CREW from Marseilles. GET THE FIRST ALBUM, PEOPLE.

As far as German rap goes: above all others I recommend Curse, Eins Zwo (and any Dendemann solo work), and Nico Suave. Others simply cannot match these three in terms of lyricism (and the production on Eins Zwo work, particularly 'Zwei' is top-notch).
I'm also partial to the Sleepwalker 'Vorsprechtermin' comp (2 discs of Hamburg hip hop).

reading this at the moment, not very deep but a nice enough read

djdee (djdee2005), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

mattgy.net Benn Loxu blog often has African rap.

Steve-k (Steve K), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

regarding german hiphop, may i also warmly recommend SIDO? some of his stuff has a slighly grimey flavour though.

xenografia, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Dutch rap is the best! :-) Download some Extince or Opgezwolle...

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

Hang on.. Dom posted to this thread and didn't mention Caparezza? Looks like I have to.

CAPAREZZA! For god's sake, just listen. Man's a genius. "Giuda Me". "Fuori Dal Tunnel". Two of the best hip-hop songs EVAH.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

xenografia: is SIDO part of that Die Sekte / A.I.D.S. crew? I find them more than a bit difficult to stomach. Between the obvious AIDS joke and B-Tight's quasi-conceptual but overall mostly racist "Neger in Mir" gimmick...

i am nervous (cochere), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

yes, "die Sekte" is SIDO's crew. and yes, their lyrics are controversial. charging them with straightforward racism is problematic as B-Tight and SIDO both have non-white parents.

xenografia, Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

I was aware of that, but still... I don't know, I still find it difficult to take for some reason. I mean, the chorus of "Der Neger" speaks for itself I believe. It seems less like an appreciation of his (B-Tight's) background and more like a condemnation of it.

i am nervous (cochere), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

i think you really misinterpret the lyrics. b-tight speaks of himself and he presents himself as getto-pimp style superhero in conventional
hiphop fashion, reappropriating the racist epithet. admittedly, parts of these lyrics also admit a straightforward interpretation if one is so inclined. but then that is true of most hiphop.

what i find more interesting is the precise nature of SIDOs and B-Tight's relationship. they come close to saying they are lovers at times and SIDO repeatedly raps that he would also let men suck his dick. not many rappers go that far in public.

xenografia, Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I suppose that's true... I guess it could be interpreted both ways. I may have been reading it too literally.

Can you give me some more examples of what you're talking about in your second paragraph? I never heard anything about that in my reading about either of them.

i am nervous (cochere), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

well, i don't particularly liked these lyrics, but they are B-Tight's (whom i don't rate as a rapper) not SIDO's. the latter's writings occasionally verge on the brilliant. as to the latter, i can't access my computer that stores all my music at this point (monitor broken), so i can't tell you which songs this is in at this point, sorry. I think it on old material. on this website SIDO says: "B-Tight ist mein Partner und ich bin stolz drauf."
