whats the deal with people who are all like "every year is a good year for music"?? (an anti-2004/pro-2005 thread)

2.5 months into 2005 and it's already 10 times better than 2004. There's a good 20 singles already that would have made it into my top 50 last year. I'm fine with people who think that 2004 was one of the best years for music in a while, but I'm pretty positive those people are among a minority. At this point, 2005 is looking like it may be the year that defines this decade.

Who's with me?!??!?

*crickets*

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

2004 was wretched. i agree that 2005 is already way way better.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

what does this even mean, to be a good year or a bad year in some kind of objective terms? there was more music made, performed, and released in 2004 than any one person could possibly keep up with. everyone's year will be different from everyone else's.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

It means there was less good music in 2004 than in any other year in recent memory.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

but how could you possibly know?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

what singles do you like so much? i think albums so far have been amazing but cant think of too many singles that have grabbed me

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

I could see "more good popular music" or "more good music on a certain level of exposure" but even that is pretty subjective.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

tompaulin's album has made 2005 pretty great so far and hood too. but i thought last year was great.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

Yes. 2004 was relatively weak, worst year of the decade thus far. This year is going to be much better. Obviously there's Arular, plus the new Hold Steady (by the way, check out Your Little Hoodrat Friend, it is a musical doozy) new Queens of the Stone Age, British Sea Power...it's a good year to be a rock geek.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

strong consensus among geeks /= overall quality of the hundreds of thousands of albums released in a year

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

Of course it's subjective. People have different opinions. Mine is that 2005 so far has been a rollercoaster compared to the dullness of 2004. And yes, it's been generally better for albums so far as well, with no signs of slowing momentum.

It felt dull while it was happening, but I suppose what truly determines the worth of a given year is how that music is percieved in retrospect. I remember last summer searching for new stuff daily and finding very little, whereas today I don't think I'm trying quite as hard, and yet every week I'm discovering a new great album or another great single.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

I'm still discovering mountains of great stuff that came out in 2004! I think you can possibly say that some years are strong or weak for certain genres (ie. 2003 was stronger than 2004 for dancehall but 2004 was stronger than 2003 for conventional dance music) but there's too many swings and roundabouts all over the place to make an meaningful overall assessment.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

Blasphemy! How can you complain about 2004? Do you remember 2003?! If it wasn't for Dizzee Rascal, The Books, Broken Social Scene (and shins and strokes and manitoba, i guess) and Unicorns it would have been one of the worst years for music EVAH!

Arular, Bloc Party, LCD soundsystem and the new Beck are great, but...

(In case you forgot about 2004, strong (in some cases classic) releases from: Fiery Furnaces, Franz Ferdinand, Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, Annie, DFA, Sonic Youth, Ghostface, Streets, D. Banhart, J. Newsom, Brian Wilson, DFA, Ariel Pink, Junior Boys, etc.)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

Moron. Beethoven's 2nd didn't come out until 1803...

(And don't tell me you're one of those "Moonlight Sonata" pussies.)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

2001 by a longer shot than 2002, ultrabitches

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

Personally I'm for the music created in the current Mayan Great Cycle.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

2003 contained the greatest year for summer anthems in over a decade. And I'm one of those people who still thinks Room On Fire and The Darkness are really good, as well as The Shins record, SP/TLB, Dear Catastrophe Waitress, Justified, Elephant, the Cat Power record, and the Ted Leo album.

As for 2004, you named everything I enjoyed (and a few I didn't as much as I wanted to) in that one sentence, except for the Muse record, which no one else liked anyway.

ha, very funny, mocking people who rank years, as if you've never done it.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

every year is a good year for music IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO LOOK

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard any albums this year that would have been in my top 20 last year.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

i actually have never ranked years!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

the 21st Century: A Ranking

2000
2005
2003
2002
2004
2001

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

I think this deserves its own thread.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

2002 was the best year

green uno skip card (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

Curiously, I rank years based on my personal experience in that year, but on music. That would be mental.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

Actually, that's not true. I do weigh up years, but only those long ago, and usually in order to ascertain what the crappest years of all were. But I can only do this around one or two broad genres. Like, I'll decide that 1974 was pretty lame overall when I'm thinking about rock, and especially pop, but then I'll think of all the great funk and soul, and all the reggae I don't even know, and it all starts evening out again.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

What Is The Worst Year In Pop History? And The Best?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

every year is a good year for music IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO LOOK

and if you're not averse to turning your head occasionally!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

I think there was some great stuff released in 2004 (Bjork, Nick Cave, Franz Ferdinand, Fiery Furnaces, Futureheads, PJ Harvey, Interpol, The Libertines, Modest Mouse, Morrissey, Dizzee Rascal, Elliott Smith, The Streets, TV On The Radio, Tom Waits, Kanye West, Wilco, Brian Wilson, !!!...)

I'm not sure I'd totally subscribe to the ".... if you know where to look" theory: with the benefit of hindsight there are clearly peaks and troughs in the quality of music being released over a periods of time; although there's certainly an element of truth in it.

I think it takes a few years distance to be able to get a meaningful sense of perspective though and I certainly don't think I've got the last five years in perspective yet.

Some of the initial excitement surrounding some records will inevitably fade; some records will gradually become more and more irritating; others will turn out to be growers; some will just fall off the radar altogether.

It's not that one year isn't better or worse for music. It's just that I don't care.

Oh yeah, well I couldn't make a top 50 albums of the 2000s if you paid me! Maybe a top 10. So who's the curmudgeon now?

(that was directed as general silliness toward no one. But it's also slightly true that I haven't been moved by much new stuff the last seven or eight years).

HALF of Anniemal: are you crazy?
Yeah, should've been a third, tops!

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

2004 seemed like a good music year to me, and it was definitely the best radio/mainstream year in a while (The Killers, Modest Mouse, Franz Ferdinand, Kanye West, the return of U2, that Nelly song with Christina Aguilera -- the only thing I've ever liked from either of them -- even freaking Green Day). I'm not sure about 2005 yet. I think most of the albums I've bought so far this year actually came out last year.

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

HALF of Anniemal: are you crazy?

It's the good half, though!

when I did my 2000-2004 lists a few weeks ago, '03 was very strong in singles, and '00 dominated in albums, and '04 was very weak in both. but that's just how it stacked up for me, I wouldn't impose that on anyone else.

2004 = best year for singles since 1995. 2001 and 2003 were pretty great though.

not setting the world ablaze means something is bad?

But to the question: Every year is a good year for music.

250 reasons why 2004 was a great year:

Like I said in the original question, I think it's likely that you're part of a minority. Dance music fans loved 2004 I guess, which is totally fine with me.

Seems like 1985 is the year that most people can agree on regarding its utter suckage.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

i am a fan of dance music, yes, but i don't know that i'd call myself a "dance music fan" any moreso than I would call myself an "indie pop fan" or a "downtempo fan" or an "top 40 pop fan"

and as far as i'm concerned it was pretty great on all those fronts. i could probably come up with another couple of hundred reasons why i loved last year, but whatever. if you want to declare my pov a minority and yours a majority because it appeases your sense of whatever, then so be it. (it's usually the small, intelligent minority that has the right idea anyway *raspberry PTHHHBBBBBT*)

:)

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

ah yes, that most recent peter gabriel lp that set the world ablaze!

Not exactly, but it was still an excellent album. A middle aged man with a blue beard may not appeal to the kids though, no matter how good the music is.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

"Seems like 1985 is the year that most people can agree on regarding its utter suckage."

Hmmm, let's see now: Hounds Of Love, The Firstborn Is Dead, The Head On The Door, You're Under Arrest, This Nation's Saving Grace, New Day Rising, Flip Your Wig, Psychocandy, Night Time, Up On The Sun, Fear & Whiskey, Low Life, Rum Sodomy & The Lash, Steve McQueen, Fables Of The Reconstruction, Cupid & Psyche '85, Meat Is Murder, The Dream Of The Blue Turtles.... OK, maybe not The Dream Of The Blue Turtles, Little Creatures, VU, Rain Dogs.... ; nope, I'm afraid you can count me out of your consensus.

Bronx Dogs - And The Letters Spell

I liked half the list (2 Cagedbaby remixes - not his best from last year - Cuban Heels excepted - but get in), but this is older than 2004, I'm sure.

Major omission of Soulwax - 'NY Excuse' in my 2004 list. I need to dance to that outside of my living room soon.

BARMS, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

1985 wasn't too bad. 1987 and 1988 were considerably worse. Same about 1990, 1969, 1970 and 1971. Plus every year before 1963.

Hmm, My bad... I first heard it and got it on a release from last year:
Deadly Avenger's "Thelasttimeidothisfornothing" on Illicit. And perhaps mistakenly so, but the liner notes said all the tracks were either 'new or exclusive to that release'. Maybe they were stretching their definitions...

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

1985 was a great year as the CD-R GO! 1985 thread will testify

stop this good year bad year madness

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think there's pretty much more awesome stuff put out EVERY year than any one person can handle.

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

yeh i could name another different 250 from last year jus like that

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

1970 is officially the worst year for music anyway. A few good early prog albums, but mostly crap blues and crap country.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

1970?! Geir really is nuts.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

9BC wasn't so great either.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Yes, 1970 was a crap year for music, even though it was an excellent year for child births ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

1970 was a crap year for music, even though it was an excellent year for child births ;)

Both halves of this statement are the exact opposites of how I feel!

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

A quick synoposis of why 1970 WASN'T crap:

Bryter Layter, Shooting At The Moon, Let It Be, Sweet Baby James, Curtis, Look-Ka Py Py, Spirit In the Dark, Ladies Of The Canyon, Led Zeppelin III, Sky's The Limit, Tea For The Tillerman, Loaded, After The Gold Rush, Signed Sealed And Delivered, Moondance, Fun House, Paranoid, Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Man Who Sold The World, Close To You, The Madcap Laughs, "I'll Be There", "ABC", "I Want You Back", "These Eyes", "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours", "The Tears of a Clown","Mama Told Me (Not to Come)","O-o-h Child","Only Love Can Break Your Heart","Shilo","(They Long to Be) Close to You"," Ain't No Mountain High Enough","Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)","In The Summertime","Lola","Come And Get It","Express Yourself","Get Up I Feel Like Being Like a Sex Machine","I Want to Take You Higher","If You Could Read My Mind","Instant Karma (We All Shine On)","Lookin' Out My Back Door","Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)"," We've Only Just Begun","Your Song"

I like the way people always react to 'x was a bad year' with a list of great records, as if every year doesn't have great records.

I guess, in the interests of rigorous subjective science, I would want people doing this to list the same number of records from every other year and swear that the year in question's list is not the worst. Although that wouldn't be very rigorous, as it would be ignoring the relative quality of all the records not on the list.

It is indeed a mug's game.

1986 sucks though ("Oh, but The Queen Is Dead")

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

is this sarcasm? how else to counter the absurd statement?

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm more certain about certain years/eras being really good or bad for chart music. There may have been some great records in 1975, but you wouldn't know to look at the UK charts.

x-post. What?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Huh?

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

What I'm saying is all these 'x was a bad year' judgements are based on our imprecise, gut calculation weighings up of a year's output (as far as we are aware of it). They aren't just based on one's top 10 records of whatever year. It's all about the stuff lower down too - how much crap as well as how much gold.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Anyone remember Marcello's anti-1985 blogentry? It was pretty thorough, but there's clearly credible arguments aginst and anyway, I have a few likes from that time (I was 3 and in control of the Fisher Price turntable). 1986 seems a little non-entity to me.

Hmm, My bad... I first heard it and got it on a release from last year

It was on the first Battlecreek EP from 1999. I knew it wasn't even from this decade but needed Discogs to be sure. I have it on their Marbel Bar label's Marbles comp, but I never really liked it or anything else they did.

Jessica's right, you know.

BARMS, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

I've long thought 1984-7 were pretty bad times, but my tastes are changing, and maybe because I've overmined other eras, I find this it an interesting time now. Important waves of dance, hip-hop and UK chart pop were in decline or yet to start. It kind of falls between the cracks. R&B of that time, outside of Jam&Lewis, I have very little knowledge of, nor used to have the stomach for. But yeah, I'm discovering stuff lately.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

R'n'b of that period is pretty seminal - you got some Prince stuff, Chaka Khan, Arif Mardin productions, Luther Vandross, Midnight Star, Pebbles, Bobby Brown, even Babyface has a moment in there somewhere.

With that said, J&L are really the omnipresent producers of that time.

BARMS, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

It's all about the stuff lower down too - how much crap as well as how much gold.

i don't buy this at all. i mean if the best song ever recorded (sic) was recorded in a year and everything else that year was horrible beyond worth, i'd still argue that it was a good year for music - otherwise the "best song ever recorded" wouldn't have come out.

i see what you're saying - i just happen to have a different take on it.

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

my year includes all the old stuff i discovered or redicovered, so it's hard to imagine a fallow year. if the new lp by [x] bored me, well, whatever, there's another duke ellington record or schubert song or whatever to keep me busy.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

'74 is sort of a rough year to make a case for. Glam rock, power pop, and that's about it. I guess prog too if you like that.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

didn't rock bottom come out in that year? if so, case closed.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

You guys can keep on arguing - I'm gonna do whippets with Obligatory Sweetnsourpuss. Miccio, feel free to join us. Wheeeeee!

74 was one of the best years for soul, funk, dub and proto-disco ever
people should stop trying to blame a year for their lack of diverse listening/breadth of musical knowledge

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

reccomend me tracks.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

seriously. I'm interested.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

There may have been some great records in 1975, but you wouldn't know to look at the UK charts.

The best single ever released in the entire history topped the UK charts at the end of 1975.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Personally I think both 2004 and 2005 have been good years for mainstream (chart) pop in particular. I remember it used to be pretty much dead by the late '90s/early '00s and then there was 'Toxic', which I think brought a wave of freshness.

daavid (daavid), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

True about 1974, I forgot about that one. 1970 is outstanding though.

I'm now realizing my motivation for this question, which is that I'm pretty sure it's been years since I've enjoyed this much new music during the second week of March - I have enough favorite new songs to probably fill 2 80-minute CD's. 1999 might be the last time I experienced anything like this. Usually this doesn't start really kicking in for me until May or June, and 2004 had a 3-month dry period for me last summer. (And it's not like I wasn't searching for any new music during that time.) I remember it being a huge breath of fresh air to finally get to hear "Flap Your Wings" by Nelly, which was early August, and a month afterwards saying "Finally!" to myself when hearing "Somebody Told Me."

I'll admit that 25% of the "new" stuff I'm enjoying now is from the last month or 2 of 2004, but I still think last summer was a very boring period, and in most cases, the music of the summer is essentially what makes or breaks any given year.
