Taking Sides: The Killers Vs The Rolling Stones

Did The Stones ever do anything even half, just HALF, as good as Mr Brightside?

In one song alone The Killers have this wrapped.

And Andy You're a Star is just perfect too.

Zarr, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I think I'm on the verge of falling in love with The Killers based on "Somebody Told Me" and "Mr Brightside" but "Gimme Shelter" is one of the greatest songs ever conceived.

I must say that I'm amazed (and pleased) The Killers are getting US top-40 love. They sound so distinct from everything else on the charts except for (shockingly) Kelly Clarkson.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

If Mick Jagger Were In A Banana Suit Singing "The Show" While Playing Hide The Snausages With A Wildebeest, Would He Be Half As Sexy As The Lead Killer Is On The Cover Of Newest Spin Looking All Bleached-Like?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

"I've got soul but I'm not a soldier" is one of my alltime favourite insanely stupid pop lyrics that actually sounds rad in the song.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

NEW WAVE IS BACK

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

oh and stones, obv

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

(hahaha Daver!)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I cannot believe how crap music was until The Libs, The Killer, The Raveonettes, The White Stripes etc came along and blow the roof down. Fuck Chris Martin - his mission to bland up the Top 10 has now failed.

Zarr, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

"Mr Brightside" is a fabulous, thrilling pop song. When they've written dozens of fabulous, thrilling pop songs they might be as good as the Stones. Try listening beyond the cliche.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Please don't dignify this thread with serious answers. I love the Killers' singles, but really now.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, I kind of want to engage with what this argument means. Zarr, why are those bands a) different to all the stuff they've copied? and b) less one-note than the likes of Coldplay?

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Miss You is better and more fun than Mr. Brightside

- "DISCO STONES 4 EVA"

I must say that I'm amazed (and pleased) The Killers are getting US top-40 love. They sound so distinct from everything else on the charts except for (shockingly) Kelly Clarkson.

Is that really so amazing, Dan? I mean, it's not like they're Neubauten. They're a great POP band!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

In a case of matter and antimatter I vote for the tachyons.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

They're a great POP band!

You really need to raise your standards. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

If The Libertines Recorded A New Album, And New Music Express Didn't Exist, Would It Make A Sound, And If So, Would It Sound Like A Long Wet Fart?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

It would sound like a The High b-side.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

You really need to raise your standards. ;-)

Well, I could've also said.......AND THAT"S ALL THEY ARE!, as we all know from our studies that POP IS NOTHING COMPARED TO THE MAJESTY OF ROCK!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

*chokes on Froot Loops*

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

But the truth remains that I'd rather hear people listening to the Killers than fuckin' Usher or whomever.

I would so enjoy some Fruit Loops right now.

Is that really so amazing, Dan? I mean, it's not like they're Neubauten. They're a great POP band!

Compare their singer to every other singer on top-40 radio; not only does no one sound like him, but no one's even close to existing in that same vocal idiom; it really is a new wave throwback and it's somewhat startling to see people gravitate towards it (my wife absolutely loves these guys and the type of music they play isn't really her thing at all; she's much more in the Shania Twain school of music appreciation when it comes to non-classical). Also, the fact that they stick out SO much on contemporary top-40 radio is what's getting to me; they've definitely been picked as the "token indie-rock" group now that Franz Ferdinand has had their five seconds of US exposure.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

you are out of your mind

jj, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

I totally agree that the Killers and Kelly Clarkson are the only good things I've heard played a lot on radio recently.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

You're right, I guess. They do stick out like a diamond in a toilet full of turds when played next to 50 Cent, etc.

Kelly Clarkson is a breasty marionette.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

If Alex Were Fed Fruit Loops While Forced To Listen To Usher's Entire Catalogue For Ten Days Straight, Would He Switch To Fruity Pebbles Or Grape Nuts As Part Of His Balanced Nutritious Breakfast?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I'll eat Grape Nuts at YOUR WAKE, David, and not before.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Who's eating whose nuts now?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

The chorus on "Since U Been Gone" is DYNAMIC!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if Nick Z. from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs feels a sharp, painful sensation in his rear end every time that guitar bit in "Since You Been Gone" plays.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

But If I Don't Have A Wake, Then When Will Alex Eat His Grape Nuts? (Alternate Title: Is It Bad Form To Enjoy A Crunchy Breakfast Cereal During Someone's Eulogy?)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

I'll eat Grape Nuts in the ninth circle of Hell with your grandmother.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Smell the Majesty!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Kelly Clarkson is a breasty marionette.

is this supposed to be a bad thing?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I'll eat Grape Nuts in the ninth circle of Hell with your grandmother

But Alex, that's the really cold bit. Your milk would freeze.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

That's why they call it Hell.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Ha! Grandma's in the 3rd circle, SUCKA!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

That's what she told you, LOSUH!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Dude, you totally spelled LOOSA wrong. Sheesh.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

That's how they spell it.....IN HELL!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

This thread has gotten very silly indeed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Which is pretty much what it deserved.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Erm, In Hell.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

And we will all go together when we go!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

We will all go together when we go.
All suffuse with an incandescent glow.
No one will have the endurance
To collect on his insurance,
Lloyd’s of london will be loaded when they go.

Oh we will all fry together when we fry.
We’ll be french fried potatoes by and by.
There will be no more misery
When the world is our rotisserie,
Yes, we will all fry together when we fry.

Down by the old maelstrom,
There’ll be a storm before the calm.

And we will all bake together when we bake.
There’ll be nobody present at the wake.
With complete participation
In that grand incineration,
Nearly three billion hunks of well-done steak.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Man I really want to see them live. I can't get enough of The Killers album and its been months. This is, like, the best LP in ages.

Zarr, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. In Hell.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Are there two different lyrics for "We Will All Go Together When We Go"? My version has the awesome "Just sing out a te deum/ When you see that ICBM" line.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Mmmmm ... Froot Loops ...

(Shakes out of reverie) Oh yeah - The Killers. Coupla very cool singles. If your point is that at one time in 1964, the Stones were just a group with a coupla very cool singles, so who knows, I'm with you. But if you're measuring them both in the here and now, surely decades of cool singles and albums count for something.

Froot Loops ...

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

The Killers, The Killers, The Killers. Where is the love for the Strokes, maaaaaaaan?

ffirehorse (firehorse), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

The Strokes are boring.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Anyone vs. The Rolling Stones and the Rolling Stones win.

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

The Strokes kinda suck but respect to them for bringing all this music back to the radio.

Zarr, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

whhhaaa

this killers love all of a sudden is baffling.

i mean, i like Mr Brightside as much as the next guy but c'mon.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

The next guy is me. I think Mr Brighside is shit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

I know i've said this before but anybody who loves Mr Brightside needs to hear the version they did before it got a big label push and they remixed it and added synths and stuff.

it was a limp, mumbly beast.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Dan's first post in this thread OTM.

djdee (djdee2005), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Ned, you remember that story where Lester Bangs was driving and "Psychotic Reaction" came on the radio and he clapped himself on the head and said, "What was I thinking? That's a great song?" Well...

Oh wait, you don't drive!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Ned doesn't drive?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

? I thought you knew that!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

I know i've said this before but anybody who loves Mr Brightside needs to hear the version they did before it got a big label push and they remixed it and added synths and stuff.

Um, why? So an inferior version of "Mr. Brightside" exists; I'm not sure why this means I shouldn't like the version that's getting played on the radio now.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Anybody who loves "Bohemian Rhapsody" should totally hear the version by this drunken busker with a banjo.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Anybody who loves "The Magic Flute" needs to see the back of a beermat where Mozart jotted down some notes for the original overture.

Anybody who loves "I Adore Mi Amor" should totally hear the version Color Me Badd recorded by farting into an autotuner while fucking a goat. It barely sounds like the same song!

okay, it was hyperbole-- perhaps in response to the ridiculous argument put forth by the poster

his face was burned off in a flaming crossbow accident (King Kobra), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

Well yeah, I think 99.95% of the human population that has heard both bands would agree that the original premise is completely stupid and hardly worth considering (which is why no one on the thread is actually considering it beyond a five second "what a fucking stupid comparison" post).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

point taken. but there was surprisingly little namecalling involved in this thread

i much prefer that one Caesars track currently used on the iPod advert to anything the Killers have done (except the first track on the album maybe) - it's like Inspirals vs Shed Seven yet again basically

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

I can't be the only person who fell in love with the Placebo pastiche original version of "Mr Brightside".

Tim, between this thread and the other, I've been wondering what exactly you mean when you use the word "dynamic". The polytonal version of "Since U Been Gone" on SNL was intriguing, mind you.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

It's about Ned not driving Alex to the 3rd circle of Hell to eat frozen frootloops with David's grandmother, escorted by a Breasty Majorette with a sharp pain in her rear.
Geddit?

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

The Killers should be paying royalties to Blur for "Somebody Told Me," but you knew that already. The Killer are about "Dancing With Mr. D" level Stones.

Leather Tuscadero, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

The Killers should be paying royalties to Blur for "Somebody Told Me,"

Why? What song does it rip off?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

sing the chorus of "Boys & Girls" and then sing the chorus of "Somebody Told Me"

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

though I don't think its royalty-level or anything.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

Is there a vastly different version of "Girls & Boys" that I am unaware of floating around out there? Because those choruses appear to have fuck-all to do with each other beyond maybe sharing a chord in their respective progressions (which would be fulfilling different functions in the chord progressions because the Blur progression is based on a major key and the Killers progression is based on a minor key).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

yeh i hear no real similarity.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 10 March 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Shit, whichever snotnosed pseudo-punk fuXor sings "Girls don't like boys / girls like cars and money" should be paying Blur "Girls & Boys" royalties - now THAT was a ripoff. Anyone know which song I'm talking about?

PS As I said before on another thread, I have no clue why people find "Mr. Brightside" catchy. "Somebody Told me" - hell yes. Undeniable. But "Mr. Brightside?!" Really? I can barely recall how it goes, and I heard it 10 times at least.

Oh, and, multiple x-post, "Since U Been Gone" is a perfect pop pastry on the level of "Voices Carry." I love it, "Maps" bridge and all.

good charlotte.

those songs aren't THAT similar, other than the fact that they use the words "girls" and "boys".....

said Blur song alway reminds me alot of "Speed of Life" off Low by Bowie, so maybe Dave should get all the $$$$$$$$$$
