miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

and I thought i was in a bad mood today

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

jesus christ i need this NOW

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

acdcrocks.com is showing a release on March 29th (there's also some more info there), and amazon has it priced at $13.99!!

Erik The Mainer (EZSnappin), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Dang. The first DVD alone, jeepers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

haha, does the Bon/Brian split amongst the two discs sound familiar? ;)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Oh, so YOU'RE Angus Young.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

It made me think of those best-ofs you all (donut most particularly) were hashing out in the other threads. Though I like this better than a best of, myself.

(x-post alert thingie)

Erik The Mainer (EZSnappin), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Though I like this better than a best of,

Fuckin' a! I don't need no best of (ok maybe of the Brian years). What I need is to finally see the video where, if rumor be true, Bon plays the bagpipes on the back of a moving truck! YEAAAAAAH

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I swear I saw that once... an 18 or 20' box truck wuth the backdoor open, and Bon wailing away. I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks.

Erik The Mainer (EZSnappin), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I just got a copy of this and digested it pretty quickly (and loudly). It'd been so long since I saw the "You Shook Me All Night Long" video that I never noticed it was made years after "Back in Black." It doesn't even have Phil Rudd on drums! And why the hell does it have exercise bikes?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Why not? ;-) Thank for reminding me of this, I think I'll have to get it this weekend!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Is it out yet? I thought it was the end of the month.

Erik The Mainer (EZSnappin), Thursday, 17 March 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Looks good. Hopefully it will have the Oz TV performance where Bon is dressed like a schoolgirl!

The Velvet Overlord (The Velvet Overlord), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

This is a good year for rock DVDs. Also out: X: The Unheard Music

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 18 March 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

I got an advance. And yes, Bon's in drag singing "Baby Please Don't Go." It's all a mix of live clips and promos. Sounds great in 5.1!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 18 March 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

I CANNOT WAIT

miccio (miccio), Friday, 18 March 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

I just finished watching the first disc, and I'm having trouble describing... just great gobs on Bon and Angus silliness. Bon's clothes - let's just say I'm glad I was just a kid in the 70's.

Sound is great, and it looks like they tried to clean up clips when they could. Looking forward to disc 2, though more of that is familiar from my teen years.

Big bonus was my local record store having it on sale for $9.95. Sweet.

Erik The Mainer (EZSnappin), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

I could have gotten it a bit cheaper if I'd gone to Best Buy, but I wanted to support my pals at the local store, where I still got it for $15. I would have paid a lot more just for disc one.

I'm watching it later tonight with a pal so I'm only letting myself look at the booklet...which is more than enough to tell me I'll be watching this for ages.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm ALL OVER this.

hey, what percentage of it is produced "videos" as opposed to concert footage?
(I am particularly curious about 'Dirty Deeds' and 'R&R aint noise pollution')

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

MUST GET THIS. This weekend.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

It's a pretty weird mix of stuff - TV performances (both live - "Dirty Deeds" is one where Bon mixes up the verses - and "Australian Bandstand" lip-sync things), promotional faux-concert cuts (most of the "Highway to Hell" and "Back in Black" cuts), Bon-era videos for "Jailbreak", "It's a Long Way To The Top" and "Let There Be Rock". Most of the Brian-era is the bad MTV videos, including the full "Fly on the Wall" suite.

It was cool to see that the pattern on the prisoners clothes in the "Are We Ready" video is the same as the pattern on Angus' outfit in "Jailbreak."

Erik The Mainer (EZSnappin), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

As much as I can only listen to AC/DC in limited quantities, this is a fucking awesome DVD... I'll get it...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

I watched the first part of this last night...

I think it's entirely possible that Diamond Dave copped half his prowess and moves from Bon Scott.. seriously. (I stress "half". David Lee Roth did add some originality to his sing & dance here and there, of course -- especially in his choice of clothes, hair, and mouthbreather poses)

Then again, Bon Scott's campy eye-widening-into-the-camera thing on the TV appearances reminded me of Steve Priest from Sweet during their early 70s live TV appearances in the UK. (actually, good idea for a thread.). Either way, it COMPLETELY defined a major facet of Bon Scott's appeal, not to mention his laissez-sexy manner near the microphone.

And also seeing the footage of "Rock N' Roll Damnation" and "Riff Raff" has convinced me that, now, Powerage is indeed AC/DC's finest album, followed VERY closely by Highway To Hell. (It was the reverse until last night)

And the "Let There Be Rock" video. Holy shit! I remember, when I was 9 or 10, I saw footage of this on TV.. right when AC/DC became huge in the U.S. via Back In Black and then the following long-awaited somewhat-mangled U.S. issue of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (which was a strange hodge-podge of the original 1976 album, but replacing certain key songs with previously released later songs for reasons I know fuck all about, and replacing the cartoon cover with that cool-ass Hipgnosis cover art, to give credit where credit's due).

Anyway, they were doing a spotlight in AC/DC on some U.S. entertainment news program, and they only devoted about 30 seconds to Bon Scott a la "oh yeah this guy Bon Scott who was in the band but he died last year, but anyway"... BUT BUT they showed a brief clip of this Bon Scott era video, and I've been dying to know what it was almost ALL my life, because at that time, it made me realize a) there were two main lead singers for the band, and b) I liked this Bon guy A LOT more than this ogre in a hat that goes "GRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHH!" named Brian something or other. And now I know it was the "Let There Be Rock" video! RELIEF!

And even though it's really rock-cheesy in that first generation DVD way, I love how each video clip is preceded by those digitally rendered silver balls that clang together, tell you in BIG FAT SILVER BOLD LETTERS what the next song is, then does a "CHUUUUNG CHAAAAAAAAAA" guitar sound.

Um, get The Family Jewels, guys. :)

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 8 April 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I am buying this TODAY! Come try and stop me! Really, and ya better be wearin' a cup whan ya do!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Disc One should be mandatory viewing for all fans of rock music.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 April 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

and rock really is the marriage of schmaltz and blues if you think about it.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 April 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

also, OMG HOLY SHIT AUSSIE ROCKER GIRLS ON TV SHOWS ATTACKING BAND!

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 8 April 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

making Bon fuck up the lyrics and end almost every verse (and the bridge!) with "back door man"!

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 April 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I hate the "title segues" before every tune. It's good
once or twice and then it's way too much. It also scews up the enjoyment of just playing it as a CD in the CD/DVD player. It would be an excellent "best of" set without the crap between each cut.

Anyway, other than that, the segments are terrific. "Jailbreak" is amusing as is "Show Business." On the second CD, "Nervous Shakedown" from "Flick" kills and the mini-video opera for "Fly On the Wall" pretty much gives you everything you would like to have for that album if you thought it was one of AC/DC's weak links. Eighties cheese video glued onto a little noisier than usual AC/DC (Johnson was buried in echo in the mix and buried, the guitars come at you in fits and spurts, Simon Wright mugs whenever the camera is on him).

George Smith, Friday, 8 April 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm enjoying this thread, esp donut, cos you're finally getting to see all those clips that get played at least once a year on the Aust midnight to dawn show Rage. Most of us have seen these clips dozens of times over the last 20 years. They provide the essential visual complement to Bon's cheeky starved cat voice and lyrics.

If you want to know where one of Bon's main influences lay, it was in Scottish singer Alex Harvey - or so I've been told by several Scottish acquaintances. The Scots are mad for him. My girlfriend's vocal teacher (also Scottish, also a hard rock style singer), who has played in a band with Bon, gave us a tape of the Alex Harvey Band which was a best of, spanning many years. He mentioned that Harvey was a major influence on the whole band, but especially Bon. Alex Harvey has the same cheeky, theatrical quality to his delivery - his influence is plain to see.

moley, Friday, 8 April 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

wow, I can totally hear it now that you mention it! I have their one album with "Gang Bang" on it.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 April 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Alex Harvey had a fair audience in the States for a short while. Came about as a result of a lengthy appearance on "In Concert." The SAHB set up and did their "Vambo" routine from "The Impossible Dream." Through most of the 80's in Pennsylvania, it was easy to find hair band's in bars doing "Midnight Moses" which, if you dig AC/DC, you should definitely search out.

George Smith, Friday, 8 April 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Keep yer eyes peeled for Bon's leap from the pulpit in Let There be Rock. Legend has it that he broke his ankle performing that stunt. If you look carefully when he lands something is clearly going very wrong.

The Velvet Overlord (The Velvet Overlord), Saturday, 9 April 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Welp, finally got this and watched disc 1 tonight. Heheh.

More thoughts on FT later this week, I think, but for now -- seeing raver glowsticks or the equivalent in the audience for "Dirty Deeds" was seriously blowing my mind. On top of everything else, as noted above.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

it feels weird you guys slavering over shit thats like every day here. acadaca are household names in oz.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

But Australian TV 1976 is like a mystic realm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

have you seen dogs in space ned?

its true the influence of the 70's pop show Countdown on the youth of australia is overwhelming. like col mentions above they still run repeats. it is a mystic realm for many of us.

i'm just surprised youse guys like it too. the legendary cultural cringe was in full sway in the 70's. we thought we were shit. our bands sucked but they were our bands.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

i still remember me mum forbidding my older sister from ever attending an acadaca show again when she heard angus dropped his dacks at an open air gig.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

Ah, c'mon fellows. I saw AC/DC multiple times in the US -- with UFO, with the Dictators, with Gamma, etc. -- and Angus' dropping of his trousers while also cleverly disguising his working parts in a white bath towel was pure shtick. Indeed, it was one of the most tiresome parts of the show. Doooood, screw the faux strip act, let's rock!!! It was an IQ test of sorts. If you applauded or went ga-ga, you flunked.

Good thing there is not a trace of it in "Family Jewels."

George Smith, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

haha right...acadaca r intellctuals. my sister flunked coz she was a 16 yr old aussie girl. its made for smart white guys i see. get fucked.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

Maybe they should release Coutdown clips as DVDs. I'm sure everyone would love to see Iggy Pop having a go at Molly, etc

mentalist (mentalist), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

or Molly's interview with Prince Charles! car crash TV at its finest!

haitch (haitch), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

There's a Love Is in The Air spin-off DVD with some videos but mostly Countdown clips of late-70s local charty stuff. Not that this is anywhere near as great as Molly's Ineptest Moments would be, I just saw it for the first time today. $7.95! Dunno if that's a remainder price though.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Chuck's an Angels fan. Talks about 'em in Stairway.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

he started a thread on them about two weeks ago!

i know c'mon fellows is the giveaway. bon might've laughed but i betcha he'd have liked my sister better.

Family Jewels is so wonderfully unashamedly rockist. Had it on very loud volume last night. The first DVD (the Bon one) is goosebumpingly brilliant.

mentalist (mentalist), Thursday, 21 April 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm such a dumbass, I'd seen this advertised but didn't pay attention to what it was, thought it was a new album or something. Guess I'll have to scrounge up the money for that too! I kind of think I have to see this...if only because I love the "Long Way To The Top" video...makes me wistful for the days when you could drive down Swanston Street.

Angus Young: nice teeth, man.

Phil Rudd: a God among men.

one month passes...
Yeah, Phil Rudd is my favorite drummer at the moment. It's telling that AC/DC never made a bad album until he left after For Those About To Rock. The videos on the Bon Scott disc made me yearn for the days of shoestring budgets. Favorite moments:

It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Want To Rock and Roll)
Jailbreak
Let There Be Rock
Baby Please Don't Go
High Voltage
If You Want Blood

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 13 June 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Am I confused or does Bon emit the same unbelievable shriek at the climax of "Highway To Hell" and "High Voltage"? If I was at home I'd check. I may just be mixing them up but I think they feature the same identical break: uuhhhhAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHH high...

miccio (miccio), Monday, 13 June 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

The difference between how music videos are looked at then and now is incredible. No director in his right mind nowadays would keep a take where the singer jumps off the pulpit onto the stage where the band is playing and proceed to fall right off the stage!

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Monday, 13 June 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

And film the thing in slow motion too!!

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Monday, 13 June 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Shoot. I need to start reading all of these revived threads. The leap was addressed upthread.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Monday, 13 June 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

apart from the pricey-pricey nature of the package (and the superfluity of the second disc) I am very much put off buying this out of sadness at what they *could* have included and didn't. so it ruins the thematic divide of Bon vs Brian to put Dave Evans on there? make it an easter egg or something! it's not like you've got another version of Can I Sit Next To You Girl on there anyway. and we've seen the Swanston St version of Long Way To The Top 800 TIMES A YEAR FOR THE LAST THREE DECADES, why not let the fans and curious alike have a treat and include the Federation Square (or wherever!) one that probably hasn't been screened since the 1970s as well? penny-pinching resulting in less-exciting product = massive dud.

kittt (kit brash), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

kittt, agree with all your points, however, disc 1 is still worth playing to the max on any given friday or saturday night, with recreational smokeables and alcohol at hand

Makes me glad I pulled down that full 'Rock Goes To College' show from Dimeadozen.org a few months back - 'cause it'll be banned with the release of this set.

Man on man- Bon was a God among men, wasn't he?

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:41 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah - that was supposed to come out as 'Man, oh man' !!
I'm straight as a laser (nothing wrong with gay folk though) - but all us straight men can just about admit that Bon in a jail cell wouldn't be so bad, right?

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

Enlightening.
