what else would you put on this? (I've been semi-commissioned to put together one of these...)

I guess Trans-X and Overdrive would qualify.. probably "Menergy" by Patrick Cowley?

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

donut i kiss you.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

If the pace were better I'd suggest the Leather Nun's cover of Abba's "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Divine's "You Think You're a Man," I'd guess.

I guess I should qualify this a little more... I could easily make a gay anthem box set.. as I have a lot of disco, which would go well.. I'm being a little more specific here, i guess with the ZYX qualification.. it doesn't HAVE to be ZYX, but something close to that, well, sound... discoey yet Depechey and very "hey, boyz". Dead Or Alive's "Bid Daddy Of The Rhythm" is on this.

I suppose there are tons of tracks on those Razmormaid remix collections that would qualify.

But so far, the suggestions have been great.

Ned, was there anything good released by John Sex? I know his hair was unmatchable.

"Male Stripper" - Man 2 Man Meets Mann Parrish

You're welcome.

Barbara Pennington - "All American Boy"
Tony Casso - "Love Attack"

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Ned, was there anything good released by John Sex? I know his hair was unmatchable.

Hmm..."Hustle to My Muscle" is sorta there, sorta not. Arthur might know more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

how about amanda lear's "just a gigolo"?

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

although "assassino" might fit better on this mix.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Best song title EVER

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Eddy Huntington - Meet My Friend Lyrics

Meet my friend, he knows every little trick
Meet my friend called Dick (repeat twice)

I've got a friend
He's so much fun
And I know he's ready for action
He'd like to fire
And wake up your desire
He knows every way to
Make you really lose your mind

Well hello, how do you do?
I'm really pleased, pleased to meet you (repeat twice)

Just take your time
But don't be shy
Let yourself go with the attraction
I'm sure he'd like you and I'm sure you'd like him too
My friend wants to meet you
And you'll find the four of us

chuck, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I dunno, there are tons of great ZYX records at home, and a pile of excellent non-ZYX Italodisco compilations. How about something from *Electrica Salsa*? It's one of the greatest albums of all time! The Nasty Boys' version of "I Was Made For Lovin' You" by Kiss? "Cruisin' the Streets" by the Boystown Gang? The entire Skatt Bros catalog? (OK, too rock maybe.) And maybe a Bobby O track or two, for old times's sake. (Can't go wrong with the Flirts!) If you want a Divine track, though, definitely go for "Walk Like a Man," okay?

chuck, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Silver Pozzoli - Around My Dream
Righeira - No Tengo Dinero

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

Did Righeira do the original "No Tengo Dinero"? I always forget.

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:lf9fs36ua3zg

Quite a few of the groups on there have great LPs of their own, too.

You should probably also check out stuff on TSR Records, who put out great retro-disco comps (I think they call them). And Tapps!!!

chuck, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

It's not the same song Los Umbrellos did in the 90s ("I've got no tengo dinero canero / so can we work it out) if you are wondering...

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I was confused. I have a 12-inch single where Righiera do "Vamos A La Playa," which the Miamis also do (on the album I just linked to), and I forget who did it first. (United State of Electronica just covered it last year.) Not sure if I've heard their "No Tengo Dinero" (though for all I know, I have that at home too, and just forgot.)

chuck, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

And Tapps!!!

tapps didn't have any "gay dance anthems," did they? nothing explicit as far as i can tell.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

"No Tengo Dinero" was the single before "Vamos A La Playa." The Bside was called "Dinero Scratch!"

Here's a YSI link to it.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

*downloads* Well I definitely like the way the song starts!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

The main synth line is so incredible and ridiculous!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

Some other great ones from the same genre:

Ryan Paris: Dolce Vita
Valerie Dore: The Night
Savage: Don't Cry Tonight
Miko Mission: How Old Are You
K.O.T.O: The Visitors
Baby's Gang: Happy Song
Scotch: You Take Me Up (Better than "Disco Band")

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Ah that Ryan Paris song is great, someone needs to mash that up with Spandau Ballet's "True" stat....

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

You - Boytronic
Electrica Salsa - OFF
Midnight Radio - Taffy
Happy Station (Scratch Mix) - Fun Fun
Party - Julius Brown

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Oh God, that Righeira track - I am in heaven. "Dinero Scratch" is also GREAT.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Do tell us when we can buy this compilation/box-set...

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

great stuff Mike - that taffy song is one of my all time Italo favorites.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

I used to hate Italo disco at the time, but when I listen to it now, I realise there is a lot of really great stuff, not too far from the synthpop I used to love back then.

The later stuff, such as Spagna, Eddie Huntington, Radiorama etc, leaves me somewhat cold though. Those digital synths never fitted with the Italo disco style.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Definitely throw in some Patrick Cowley. "Menergy" would be perfect for this comp. Unless you want only mid'80s italo and eurodance.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 10 March 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard that Paul Lekakis song once but I always get it stuck in my head for some reason.
