invisible spy, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

haha. i saw this today and was waiting for this thread to drop in here !

the main man promised me stuff ages ago .. guess a subtle nudge should be forthcoming to see if the promise is still on

- or did the PO lift the gorgeousness en route ??

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

what's the Entertaining the Obvious mix that's listed for sale on that site?

ps. is that doomie?

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

yes

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

i have a feeling i've talked to Cherrystones on the radio once for some reason. there was a guest DJ playing on either the SF or Berkeley radio station and he was playing some heavy stuff. and then he put on a song from Eugene McDaniel's album "Outlaw" and i called to find out what it was (because i'd only heard "Headless Heroes" at the time).

also related, on the Outlaw album, is a song called Cherrystones, and i'm assuming that's where he got his name.

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

Have you heard the 'Cherrystone's Rock's' compilation? It's an insane mix of weird, unissued psych from years past. Highly reccomended. http://gullbuy.com/buy/2002/12_10/cherryRocks.cfm

The opening track was sampled by DJ Shadow on Entroducing years ago.

, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 05:54 (twenty years ago)

yeah jaxon, its me...

there is another cherrystones radio mix online at the webcast. and yeah, entertaining the obvious is a mix you can buy - its so kick-ass, truly is. cherrystones is like a fucking fantastic dj - who got his name from the eugene mcdaniels song ... hey, send sean rowley an email, am trying to get him another show. he's a really nice guy plus he finds amazing shit for his monthly poptones top ten!

...doomie

inviisple spy, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Hi, I only just found your "Boo Radleys" thread you put here for my fao, back last year. (Apols)

Any further news?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

oh, that, no idea anymore got bogged down in sanctuary record company politics...

invisible spy, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

the golborne rd thing mentioned at the beginning of the mix.. what's the deal with that???

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

its his own show done with stuart from warp. you should check it out. hey lauren, what's up with the promos being sent of the new thing you were going to do?

everyone get cherrystones on sean rowley. i should put up the dj show he did for slint. heavy!

invisible spy, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

that's sooo rad. so is the next show a week from sunday? and is no.10 like the golborne house pub or somewhere near there?

re: promos, everything is taking about 93x longer than scheduled. business as usual really. stuff is still going ahead but everyone has been moving like a tortoise.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

i think so, i never leave the house now, see... it would entail putting on clothes.

invisible spy, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

he is djing for josephine foster at the 12 bar club, though!

invisble spy, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

josephine foster is grebt.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

yes, yes, she is, isn't she? cherrystones turned me onto her with one of his top tens! hey ian -- have you heard the new tower recordings album?

invisible spy, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

hey doing it grass roots style. could people who dig cherrystones drop sean rowley an email?

> this dj, cherrystones, is a kick ass
> psychedelic-prog-punk-folk-freak-out dj ... and am trying to get him
> on sean rowley show ...he is seriously five years ahead of his time
> ... if you have time, could you drop an email on sean rowley's arse
> and say: hey - put him on the goddamn show...?
>
> seanrowley.london@bbc.co.uk

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

unfortunately i think i just want to punch sean rowley in the gob. he irritates me.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 10 March 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

well, whatever yr feelings about sean, gareth aka cherrystones is a fine dj who needs exposure....youknowwhatimean?? just trying to do a grassroots rally for him. his entertaining the unobvious is the finest dj mix i've ever heard and i've heard alot of ropey shit.

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

doomie, you're a gary usher fan. what do you think of sacramento? not sure if thats a bit early for your kind of thing or not!

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

that's his super early beach music isnt it? not heard it -- i dig his late sixties stuff. is it early beach music?

hey email sean rowley!

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

gareth, btw, there is a super reissue of the last poets coming oot soon. just did a four hundred word piece for it in the nme. total classic. you should pick it up!

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

yes, its late 63 or early 64, its sort of country pop, co written with brian. its not very beach boysy actually, but its REALLY great.

im never really sure if last poets is the kind of thing i would like or not, i think i keep putting off investigating (because a million other things appear in the meantime), but i'll check it out

er, i dont actually know who sean rowley is! what station is his show on?

i got the cosmic michael, and inner dialogue albums, and along with jean shepard (and of course mort garson), thats whats rocking my world right now

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

oh ok, i see who sean rowley is now. i missed that bit before...

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

This thread got me thinking...

why do I get a sinking feeling when BBC 6 Music announce more Steve lamaq airtime?

apart from the obvious.

Its cause people like cherrystones would be perfect for some sort of non playlist, trawling the archives programme, but it seems the ex Radio one mafia have it all sown up.

lamaq, lard, maconie, collins.

surely one of them could lose a show for some genuinely interesting music, by someone whos credentials are a love for the obscure not a BBC staff number.

rant over....buy 'stones CD...its unlike anything in the shops and absolutely no marketing people were involved...

Danny boy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

cool, i'll soulseek the early stuff. the gary usher early stuff also is described as beach music which sort of put me off... must find the missing links between beach boys and notorious byrds brothers.

hear, hear, danny boy! its all grassroots with cherrystones. he just needs people who love music to get behind him.

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

i unfortunately couldn't make the thing last night, but i want to try to make the west london thing next week if it's on.. perhaps charltonlido would be up for an expedition?

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

im out of london, mon-thurs:( get back friday afternoon

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

you'd really like it gareth ... you can get this mix at cherrystones1@hotmail.com - seriously you will love it.

hey lauren did YOU email sean rowley today?

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

i think it's on the sunday, mr. lido.

i did, mr.spy!

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

feckin' awesome! i'm getting everyone to email him for another show... people have to make cherrystones love known to sean rowley...

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

I just did

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

cool!

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

haha, sean rowley is going to be all "wtf??" at the sudden surge.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

good! hahaa - i put this out on the poptones mailing list as well... plus some friends have been linking the link to boards they hang out on and requesting people to email sean rowley!

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

sunday? oh, that might be more possible. not this sunday, but, perhaps the next (20th?)?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

ja.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

doomie and gareth, do you guys like Magna Carta? Their album Seasons is lovely. That's my tip for the day. this cherrystones dude has been raiding my rekkerd shelves.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

link me up to some info scott...!

did YOU email sean rowley TODAY, scott?

the invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

scott, have you heard of the nite people?

the invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

there is info here, doomie:

https://www.freakemporium.com/new3/index_ns.cgi?artist=Magna%20Carta

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

i really want to hear that songs from wasties orchard album. i don't know why that freakemporium link came out like that. oh well, cutting and pasting works.

no, i haven't heard the nite people.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

the nite people are library record musicians who made this intense psychedelic album from the sixties. worth tracking down! i paid stupuid money for it on ebay!

OMG i want the magna carter double cd. come on ebay transaction, come through... come through so i can spend the money you are paying me for promos...

thanks for the tip!

hey did you hear that they just reissued the bill fay albums?

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that double-cd is the way to go.

Doomie, a long time ago you started a thread on the band Mellow. I got their album Another Mellow Spring at the thrift store a while back. I really dig it. Not too many people on ILM have heard them for some reason.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

they are pretty neat, arent they? more french prog than serge-lite air or french disco. did you like the m83 new one? i adored that. reminded me of SBB and Goblin...

invislbe spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

have you heard the new vashti bunyan/animal collective ep yet? its great!

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

i don't think i like the animal collective. but that does sound interesting.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i have mixed feelings about the animal collective but the first track is worth a download, definitely, it has this golden wizard of oz feeling about it. they don't try to force the animal collective soudn on her. its a nice interface, definitely.

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

have you heard the new tower recordings album?

I have and quite enjoy Galaxies Incredible Sensual Transmission but I don't own the really limited one they just put out, Message From The Celestial Explosions or whatever. I have downloaded it, though, but not really listened thoroughly. The former is great!

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

cool. i'm getting a cdr of the new one from my mate. all looking forward to it, ian. what do you make of the new burmese men?

have YOU emailed sean rowley, YET?

the invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Men is okay. I don't have the urge to listen to it very often, though, I must say. I'm glad there's that one track at the end that gets fast. It's a nice change-up from the monotony of the sludge sludge of the rest of the album.

I have not emailed sean rowley yet, but I think I will do it NOW.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i really dig the galaxies incredible sensual transmission album. i should put that on now. and i really like samara's album to.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

I am intrigued by this Tower Recordings talk. Oh and Scott, come to NYC when I'm there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Samara played the show last night (w/ Wooden Wand, Marisas Nadler & White Rock.) She was pretty good, but she got really pissed at the loud/obnoxious crowd. I don't blame her, really.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i hear you - i thought i would like the burmese men better than i did but that being said it is specifically designed to be loud and offensive. dug the sightings record much more. like a lo-fi my bloody valentine loveless-

weird, speaking of marissa nadler, there is a track from her unreleased album up on the webcast - www.poptones.co.uk/webcast.htm. plus did an interview with her. her album rules.

the invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

oh btw ned,

have YOU emailed sean rowley YET?

the invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, her album is one of my favorites from last year. The new album is supposed to be out this month, I think? There's some piece on her in the new issue of the Fader, too. xpost

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

http://www.poptones.co.uk/interviews/qod_marissa_nadler.htm

here is the interview - i went campy in the intro because i wanted the libertines punk kids to really give her a shot, which they did by the amount of people who listened to her tracks here: www.poptones.co.uk/webcast.htm

and yes, cherrystones was the guy who got me into marissa nadler.

the invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

have YOU emailed sean rowley YET?

Huh? I don't even know who he is. What's the story?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

o.k. sean rowley does a radio show on bbc. cherrystones, this psych dj did a few shows and we are doing a grassroots campaign to get him on again. the link on the top of the thread is where you can listen to his last sean rowley show which is ace. so email him!!

the invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

plus during the broadcast he plays tower recordings. you can check it out ...

i got the first comets on fire album ... dunno about it. not as agood as the other two, what do you reckon, scott, ian...?

the invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

oh, definitely not as good at all. I think the diversity of songwriting that began to crop up on Field Recordings From The Sun was a step in the right direction, and on blue cathedral it hangs together in such a way that A) it all sounds 'of a piece' and B) is not boring or grating as it can be on the first record. i sold my copy of that, and i barely ever listen to the second one, to be honest.. though before blue cathedral came out, i gave it much more airtime.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

There's a different drummer on the first Comets on Fire. Utrillo really brings the forward surge on the last two. Parts of the first one almost sound like Kiss, which I kind of like. but, yeah, it doesn't stack up to the rest.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Ex-post up dere.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why i didn't like that Blue Cathedral album more. There was no reason why I shouldn't have loved it. I think I actually got rid of it too, so I won't have a chance to like it more anytime soon. It's my kind of thing and all. And why did I like that Gris Gris album so much? I played that one a lot. You never know, I guess...

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Ned, I never go to new york. maybe i should. when are you gonna be there? it's a thought anyway. even when i lived in philly i never went to new york. i'm a loser that way. all their rekkerds are overpriced. i've never even visited chuck at the voice.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

that's weird that you don't like comets on fire, scott? that's funny what you said about never going to new york. i never go into central london if i can help it. all the records are overpriced and the clubs usually suck. hope this doesn't sound weird but i read norman mailer's 'tough guys don't dance' and thought - i wonder if scott lives in a town like that...?

i think maybe comets improved when they got ben chasney in to do his six organs of admittance thing all over it? hmmmm... i really enjoy field recordings from the sun. but the first one, dunno...?

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

oh btw tripmaker,

have YOU emailed sean rowley TODAY?

(you know i'm going to ask this of everyone..)

scott have you heard of martha velez and how much should i plug down for her 7' of swampman. i remember that she was in elephant's memory.

invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

i got a GREAT martha velez record during my christmas holiday trip!

tough guys was set in provincetown, no? pretty similar to martha's vineyard. THEY need a good record store there. That's for sure. At least I can buy tower recordings vinyl on the island.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

I wrote up the Velez record and all the other stuff I bought on that trip on my blog:

http://skotrok.blogspot.com/2004/12/holiday-haul.html

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

I haven't emailed Sean Rowley today, but maybe I will. I liked the last Cherrystones session that was posted here a few months ago a little more than this one. The last one had some Mighty Baby and WWVV and then broke into Rupert Holmes "Escape." I've got the Cherrystone's Picks 2lp and I'm seriously considering picking up the cd that he's offering, based on how great that 2lp is. Have any of you guys heard Habbibyaya? Or something like that, anyway.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Mashmakhan - S/T (Epic) Another keeper. Dreamy and artful Canadian psych/rock/pop. Some really nice ideas on this one and some good playing. I was suspicious of the Gene Lees liners cuz he goes out of his way to say how Mashmakhan aren't just your typical kiddie group. No, they are jazzy! Which is usually a warning sign for bad horn rock ahead. Plus, he namechecks Bobby Colomby of Blood, Seat, & Tears. But no! Tis better than all that. (and no direspect toward BS&T intended. They do have a lot to answer for though.) This record is just one of a thousand really good art-rock albums that came out at the tail-end of the 60's and which were largely forgotten once those shiny new moogs began to blare. 1968 and 1969 were great years for records that weren't one thing or another. Adventurous records that were born dead cuz the dream had died, psychedelia was passe, and we we were going to the country to gig frogs, pick, and grin. (and then pass out in our own waste. And then wake up horrified and end up going to law school. Not ME. Other people. All those gentleman pot-farmers.)

How weird is this Scott - I just ordered this record from caiman. weird. Yeah, it was set in Provincetown!

the mix is worth picking up. he is working on part two. i kinda of hear what you are saying with regards to the first session, but the second session is going for less of a classic psych feel and more of a folk-rock feel. But you should email him regardless - i mean, what does it cost you? nada!

Haven't heard of Habbibyaya - information please?

the invisible spy, Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, you will like that Mashmakhan. Very well done record.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

"Haven't heard of Habbibyaya - information please?"
Well, first of all, I'm not sure if I'm spelling it right. Apparently some of the guys from Mighty Baby were in this group and they put out one lp in the early 70's of droney eastern raga rock type stuff. Neil Campbell was singing it's praises on a list that I'm on. Apparently, one of the original members is selling cdr copies of it through a website as it's been out of print forever.
I haven't heard the Mashmakhan record, but their part in Festival Express is really awesome, especilly since they come out of nowhere with this really funky/jazzy psych that sounds nothing like the rest of the stuff in the movie. Complete with totally unecessary flute solo from the organist.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

scott, did you ever get my email regarding that argentinian psych band The Speakers?

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

i did, jaxon, thank yoo. but i waited too long to listen to it, so it went away. i am very very slow.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)
