Please Tell Me About...Billie Piper (teenpopvet, new Dr. Who's asst.)

Haven't yet seen the new, leaked Dr. Who, but am curious about his assistant, Rose (her name is title of the purloined return; a tablod tries to buy rights to her life story after she survives a spectacular explosion). Played by Billie Piper, said to be a teenpopper, now 21, and having crossed over to drama, via The Canterbury Tales and Belle And The Boys. Really cute, but even more importantly, what's her music like?

I voted for "Because We Want To" (her first single) in the UK 1000 #1s Poll. Great song.

Bumfluff, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

She made the two best Britney Spears singles not made by Britney Spears.

1. "Honey To The Bee" - greatest Lolita-pop single of the 1990s. Absolutely astonishingly CREAMY WORLD OF BLISS to get lost in. Also, incredibly gross - she sings the word "honey" as if it's "horny". She was about 16 at the time.

2. "Day And Night" - basically, if you think "Oops I Did It Again" is great and you don't like this, you're foolish.

Also recorded a rubbish version of "The Tide Is High", but her second album is rather better than most people think.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't "Day and Night" her indie song?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

honey to the bee is rubbish, sounds like one of thos spiritualized songs where they try ane be a bit gospel

girlfriend is alright though

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

I would really like to hear her songs again, as oddly I can remember what they were like but not whether they were good. Please gmail them to me someone.

Which one ripped off "Never Ever"?

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

This really makes me want to start that 21st Century Girls thread that I've been hankering to do on here since 2002.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

"Honey To The Bee" is the one that sounds like "Never Ever", though not as much as "Pure And Simple" by Hear'say, mind.

I've recently acquired the second album, Lex, a friend of mine was going to throw it out, but I rescued it - "Run That By Me" is great, for instance.

(x-post, do it Dom!)

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Her father is Randy Piper, the ancient one who stood at the back in naughty metal band WASP.

snotty moore, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Honey To The Bee is great you mentalist. Although I haven't heard it in five years.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I don't know who told you she was a vet. She isn't a vet.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

"Vet" because the bbc news thingie mentioned that she'd been recording since 16-odd, and is now 21. So, she did all that incl. ripping off "Never Ever"? Ooh wee. BBC claimed that most Dr.Who fans were favorable, even excited, but some scorned her as not a real (incl. "trained") actress.

don, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

'Walk Of Life' was the indie one

debut single far and away her best. naturally i despised it at the time...

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

That version of Tide is High was by Billie Piper?! Damn you bad mp3 tagging.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

Who does your MP3 say it was by?

(I'm trying to stop an awful joke being made here)

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

I interviewed her the day after the debut single went to #1

She was 15 and she was smoking a fag. Someone who I presumed to be her mum gave her a light.

This is all I can remember.

coco, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

mp3 claims it is by Atomic Kitten?? I don't actually know how I came to be in possession of this MP3 as I didn't download anything either searching for A) Atomic Kitten B) The Tide is High but it's there, plain as day.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

No, this is a DIFFERENT awful version of "The Tide Is High" that Billie did, some years before Atomic Kitten did their version, which IS NOT THAT BAD.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

You know that's not even that g ood of a Blondie song, wtf?

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

It's not even that Blondie of a Blondie song.

I have only ever heard two songs by Billie, but I have gone and bought the singles of both those songs. It's exciting that this thread suggests she might have a THIRD that's good!

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

OK, maybe she is a vet.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

Her hits really haven't dated that well, sad to say.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

some years before Atomic Kitten did their version, which IS NOT THAT BAD.

Edward, you only say this because you were never exposed to the full horror of the ELBOW DANCE in the video.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

The first three sound really dated - especially "Girlfriend", but I'm personally quite amazed how well "Something Deep Inside" - not a favourite at the time - stacks up today. "Day And Night" is very much of its time, but is so blustery that it still works.

And Lex, of COURSE I saw the elbow dance. I didn't live in a cave when it came out!

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

You know that's not even that g ood of a Blondie song, wtf?

-- Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyza...) (webmail), March 9th, 2005 5:08 AM. (allyzay) (link)

but it's a great paragons song

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

Day & Night is, as Edward says, a great pop song in the Britney vein.

davidsim (davidsim), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

it reminded me more of Sam Fox

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

No way! Too crisp and quenching - Sam Fox's best productions were much drier and sweatier.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

I've been trying to do the chorus dance from the first single lately. I'll bet they've all dated pretty badly, but I'm interested to hear the good ones.

BARMS, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

edward - just in that it seemed '80s'/dated at the time perhaps! but then that style came back somewhat.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Girlfriend was really nice. Had kind of an early 80s feel to it back in 1998, at a time when that sound wasn't really getting hot yet.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

You know, fair enough, "Why have you got to play that song so loud?" is the kind of thing parents often ask their unruly teenagers. But has anyone ever really been asked "Why do you always run around in crowds"? I suspect not.

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

i always felt that Billie should show more respect for her neighbours and fellow citizens. she was sending out a bad message.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

the other two points 'dancing all night' and 'saying what's on your mind' are much more reasonable however.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Honey To The Bee >>>>>> Deadlines & Diets >>>>> The Facts Of Life >>> Pure & Simple >>> Never Ever (I do really love Never Ever)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

War Of Nerves beats them all

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

No way, Steve and I agree!

BARMS, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

dudes did i have to italicize the "Blondie" to make clear the Billie (which I haven't heard but am taking at word) < Atomic Kitten < Blondie covers of crap spectrum!

stevem is OTM I think.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Because We Want To < Honey To The Bee < Day And Night < Never Ever < Girlfriend

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

< < < < < < < < < Pure And Simple

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

SORRY I GOT THAT ALL THE WRONG WAY ROUND BILLIE HAS ADDLED MY BRANE.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Just "think" what she'll do to you the)))TARDIS(((,Matt DC!

don, Thursday, 10 March 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

*In* the TARDIS, that is (see, she flustered me too)

don, Thursday, 10 March 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
'Because We Want To' is still better.

a nuclear-powered carrot (braveclub), Thursday, 25 January 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

She's involved in a threesome at the moment.

Start again..

She's involved in a three-person show at the Theatre Royal, Windsor at the moment.

(Peopple with a fastidious memory may recall my sister works there in't wardrobe)

I'm making no comment or confirmation about three thespians getting totally rataresd prior to and during their first and final on-stage rehearsal, I'm sure the shows proper are all going very well...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 January 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

I wish they'd repeat Bella & The Boys.

vita susicivus (blueski), Thursday, 25 January 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

'day and night' is amazing, ah the golden age of 'baby one more time' copyists! (the best was probably samantha mumba's 'gotta tell you', totally awesome.) can teenpop get back there asap please.

i love 'honey to the b' (i'm SURE it was B rather than Bee originally, cos i remember taking ages to get the pun) but it feels soiled now it's been approved by moyles. the cunt.
