Wow. People diagnosed with clinical depression SHOULD NOT HAVE GUNS.

Michael Daddino, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Weird; I was listening to Friend or Foe last night on South Oxford St.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

great marcello - one more bugger who doesn't want me to let loose

Geoff, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stand and Deliver is my favorite song and we were just watching the Adam Ant video anthology apropos of nothing so we're having a right laugh over this.

Hell I use "I'm the dandy highwayman so sick of indie fashion" as my tagline on my blog. I love Adam Ant. That fucking jacket is awesome, I wish I could wear that and the white stripe to work.

Ally, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Adam Ant rools OK. I heard about this about an hour ago and felt a warm glow of perverse happiness.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And there was Steve Strange, still evidently traumatised by that spooky Mind Of A Toy video. Is a pattern developing here? Who's next? Martin Fry, for possession of a poison arrow?

Daniel, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to mutate this into an Adam Ant S/D, C/D thread. Thanks. Go forth and have fun.

Ally, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: Everything! We love you, Adam!!!! Even for your appearance on Northern Exposure.

This reminds me that I need to buy the Antbox.

Andy K., Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This reminds me that I need to buy the Antbox.

You better goddamn well buy that thing, it's fantastic. Picked mine up this past summer.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: ALL the singles except "Puss In Boots" and "Strip". Friend or Foe album. All videos/pop show appearances ever.

Destroy: "Room At The Top". "Wonderful". Concept of punk credibility.

Particularly overlooked gem I heard the other day: "Apollo 9" - really ace nonsense lyrics and a fantastic chorus. To the dancefloor!

Tom, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I looked for the Antbox on Amazon, it wasn't listed...where'd you get it, Ned?

Apollo 9 is a great song, one I had also overlooked myself until the other day. It only bolsters our theory that all songs with space vehicle countdowns are great songs.

Search: Basically everything except "Vive le Rock" and "Ant Rap", though when he starts talking nonsense French in "Ant Rap" it's pretty good. And definitely search the video for "Stand and Deliver" a.k.a. the greatest accomplishment in music video history. Oh, and the lyrics to "Whip in my Valise" are great.

Ally, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh and why don't you like "Strip"?

Ally, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

where'd you get it, Ned?

My being in the UK helped, but I've seen it over here in various stores too. Amazon.co.uk should have it easy.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Was "Pablo Picasso Visits the Planet of the Apes" written specifically to answer Jonathan Richman? The whole song basically calls him an asshole, which JR claimed had never happened. There's not a lot of art-criticism songs, is there? 'Songs for Drella'? Manic Street Preachers' "Condemned to Rock'n'Roll"?

dave q, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seems things are going from bad to worse for the stripey-faced gun- toting loon, if todays tabloids are to be believed.

Alex Marklew, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just dont like the chorus of "Strip", it sounds like some kind of music hall pastiche, and like most songs with choruses you dont like it seems to be repeated a billion times.

Tom, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They destroy Ant Rap = they are monkeys.

Sarah, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, they DO carry on with the chorus a lot on Strip, don't they? I like the bit towards the end though where he sings over the chorus. I DON'T like the bit with the girl talking though.

And yeah, what the hell? Is that what you do in Britain, commit people to asylums for firearms possession? These are minor offenses in the US, you know. Granted, that could imply something a bit couldn't it but still seems a bit extreme to commit someone for this whole thing.

Ally, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What did Arthur Lee get done for? Was that firearms or firearms and drugs or what?

Tom, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The story re Lee is here. Scroll down to paragraph starting "1996: "

Re Adam Ant S/D: wise words upthread from Sarah and Tom.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you can't get yer Antbox in yer US, you can order it from HMV Canada (www.hmv.com) at 62.99 Canadian, which works out to under just $40 US.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sean, you are my hero. If only someone else would buy it for me, my life would be set.

Ally, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is somebody going to answer my question? Everybody in the world claims they were Antpeople back in the day, so here's somebody's chance to prove it! Or is everybody lying?

dave q, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Considering today's headlines, I wonder if one of Momus's other talents is prognostication ... whatever, what interesting timing!

(Matter of fact, I downloaded the "Stand and Deliver" video offa Morpheus because of this thread. Man!)

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Momus had already spotted the trend with the first detainment, though, thus the headline. My Ant background -- none, actually. The only song I ever heard growing up was "Goody Two Shoes," but I liked it a lot. Picked up Antics in the Forbidden Zone back in 1990 or so and then just explored more from there.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All I know are Adam Ant's singles. I don't really delve too deeply into artist backgrounds of catalogs, let's be honest here - I mean, what does anyone here expect of me, knowledge? Besides, I was like 2 when Adam Ant was in his heyday - I wish I could answer questions but I was 2. I can tell you all about this one ad for milk, though, that ripped off Goody Two Shoes, that was the bomb, as in "someone set us up" (for some reason I think there should be a revival of that now).

Oh, Tad, isn't Stand and Deliver the best thing you've ever seen? I mean, fuck.

Ally, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wowzers, Ally, I've been your hero TWICE now. What's the record? I think I'm gonna go for it!

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You now have to be the wind beneath her wings. So hop to it.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sexually awakening at the time of the StandandDeliver-vid it was the perfect timing for my first wetties.

anyone heard adam's pre-panto album? It got some cuty psychobilly songs on it about cars, aliens and JFK...

erik, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, I'm still waiting for an explanation of 'Pablo Visito el Planeto de los Simios'. It's on 'Prince Charming'. Sorry, but I HAVE to know!

dave q, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's something about it in the box set liner notes, I'll investigate.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have no idea if it's about JT or not, I've never really read too much about Adam aside from the odd article (like the terrible one by Caroline Sullivan in the Guardian) now and then and the bit in England's Dreaming.

Nicole, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sean, did you ever know that you're my hero? You're everything - everything - I wish I could be. And as Ned said, I could fly higher than an eagle, because you are the wind beneath my wings.

Yeah, thanks, now THAT'S in my head.

I like the part where he jumps thru the window. That's key.

Ally, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned is obviously cruising for a different kind of prize here.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's the prize? I want it, whatever it is.

Ally, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, putting that song in your head, I thought his prize would have been a poke in the snoot from you, Ally. If you want to punch yourself in the nose, I suppose you at least have access.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought his prize would have been a poke in the snoot from you, Ally.

It's this type of irresponsible suggestion on your part that make me worry about Canadians and their fiendish ways.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not the one that brought Bette Midler into this discussion, buddy boy.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I NEED NOT YOUR SHAMELESS ABUSE.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Should I cancel the poutine flinging, then?

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Less Bette Midler, more Adam Ant, thanks.

Ally, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dirk wears white sox, great title, very 'debute'

erik, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dave q - i haf no idea about pablo origins but that is one of my ant- faves - the grapes/pablo lyrical overhang is great.

adam ant in northern exposure = collision of genius

adam ant in hunter = hmmm
