Taking Sides: 50 Cent Vs Republica

You know, Republica never were much cop but 50 Cent is so shit he makes them sound like The Killers in comparison.

Anyway, Saffron was hot and she never sung about hating homosexuals or shooting folks or had stupid immature agendas about wanting to kill her enemies in drive by shootings or whatever. You think 50 Cent would be a bit more mature. No wonder they bottled him off at Reading - "Waaah I'm going to shoot you"... grow up man!!

Republica did have Drop Dead Gorgeous which was alright when you think about it.

Z Man, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Fun Fact: both of 50's Top 10 singles off of The Massacre use the word "erotic"!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

50 Cent has yet to employ any former members of Bow Wow Wow in G-unit, thus REPUBLICA WINS!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

they each have one great, great, great single.

However, "In Da Club" is better than "Ready To Go" and Fiddy does have a few other good songs too.

also, Fiddy is more shaggable than Saffron.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Lex OTM!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Okay, this is way way way way better than the Killers vs Rolling Stones tread already!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

(Ew, except for the thought that just popped into my head about someone shagging 50 in the bullet hole, ew.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

"Ready to Go" > "In Da Club"

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

'Wrapp' is better than 'Ready To Go'

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

also, Fiddy is more shaggable than Saffron.

hmmm, well she IS like 3ft tall...

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

(Which one, Dan?)

"Ready To Go" at a hockey game after 10 beers & two helpings of nachos during the 4th OT of Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals between Gretzky's Edmonton Oilers & the Lemieux / Jagr / Francis Penguins is STILL only = to "In Da Club". Please report to Summer School for Remedial Music Math.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I now have an image of Fiddy being used as the centrepiece of a gay porn scene. 11 orifices, right? er...wow.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

And 50 has never sung "I'm in looooove with yewwww hooooooo!"

As far as I know.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Do any Fiddy songs contain a pun as awful as "From The Rush Hour With Love"?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

y'see when he says lollipop he actually means his penis

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Holy crap my last post is as redundant as scratching a beaten rented mule's back with a hacksaw.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Dom, I spent a good 30 seconds trying to puzzle what the pun was, and when I finally got it, it was like someone farted in my face.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

silent but violent?

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

so seductive

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

tarzan, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

p.i.m.p.

tarzan, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

However, "In Da Club" is better than "Ready To Go"

This is hugely, ridiculously, unfathomably WRONG on a level that makes the Gods wince.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

DO THE MATH ALEX

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

why are you people even arguing Ready to Go when Drop Dead Gorgeous was the better song?

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Your "math" is meaningless. I've seen more logic at the bottom of a diaper bag. "Ready to Go" is a magnificent slice of rocktastic pop, whereas "In Da Club" sounds like something they play at low budget zoos to keep the hippopatomi from raping each other.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

"Ready To Go" at a hockey game...

Gah. It would be played there too, like a jock jam, wouldn't it? I hate when contexts I have no contact with or interest in come into play.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Strangely, a Republica concert is contained on my CD-R copy of Kitchens of Distinction playing in Berlin at the Metropol on Halloween 1989. I skipped through a few of the tracks and was immensely turned off by the pompousness of the music and Saffron hectoring the audience as to whether they wanted more techno bollocks. This is why 50 Cent, sadly, wins.

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Well, 50 Cent represents change
Republica represent 1997

I enjoyed 1997.
But 1997 was so eight years ago.

Therefore 50 Cent wins.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Saffron hectoring the audience as to whether they wanted more techno bollocks.

If only! "DO YOU WANT MORE TECHNO BOLLOCKS?!!" *cheer* "I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" *louder cheer* "WHO WANTS BOLLOCKS!!!?!" *loudest cheer*

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

That would a contender for the greatest concert ever!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Jesus christ Republica by such a wide margin.

I suppose this thread is as good a place as any to kick off the widespread Republica revival as anywhere. It's long overdue and ever so necessary.

What's more, it's going to happen with or without your support--do you really want to be left behind?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Allyzay OTM, wtf jerkwads

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm still lost in my own head trying to figure out if hippopotami are capable of sexually assaulting each other.

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 10 March 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

i would like to take this opportunity to mention that 50's charitable foundation is called 'G-Unity'

jake b. (cerybut), Thursday, 10 March 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit, 1997 was only 8 years ago and people have already forgotten how dreadful Republica and their radio domination were? 50 Cent's oeuvre could never ever be used to soundtrack a tampon commercial ergo he wins by an enormous margin.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

yeh Republica were actually terrible, how soon they forget. Fluke > The Game tho

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Republica were like a decade of UK dance hisory condensed into one group. How anyone could not love them is beyond me.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 10 March 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

you so crazy

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 10 March 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

i would like to take this opportunity to mention that 50's charitable foundation is called 'G-Unity'

That is pretty funny, I must admit.

How anyone could resist "Ready to Go" is beyond me and how anyone can listen to "In Da Club" without wanting stab random passers-by in the neck with a rusty screwdriver baffles me too, but it's that sort've diversity in taste that makes ILM worth contributing to.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Do you really have to blame music for wanting to stab random passers-by in the neck with a rusty screwdriver, though? I mean, to me that's basically 2:00 PM every day.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

http://www.tonynelsonphoto.com/live/images/republica.jpg

Saffron is hot??

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

What happened to Saffron? She had nice legs - really long and yummy - and that made her hot enough for me!

Zarr, Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

You'd like me.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

But do you ask crowds for techno bollocks, sir?

How anyone could resist "Ready to Go" is beyond me

I never tire of this story -- the year is 1996.

FLACK: "Did you get the Republica album?"

ME: "I did."

FLACK: "What did you think?"

ME: "I didn't like it very much."

FLACK: "...well, a lot of people do."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I liked it. I even liked the second one.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

That exchange could be about pretty much any artist.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

...excetp 50 Cent, because if you really like him, you're clearly a whistlehead.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

i like 50 cent's MUSIC ... i dunno if i like HIM (he seems like an asshole).

am i a whistlehead, then?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

But WHY do you like it?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Well, 50 Cent represents change

OTM....two quarters!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)
