Street team my arse! You are making 16 year olds put up your posters illegally for no cost, or call radio stations repeatedly requesting your crap song when they should be sleeping or doing their homework. Street teams = child slavery!

Not to mention they're just annoying.

Flash (cowboytrance), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

do bands/labels still use Street Teams ?

i thought labels had moved on ? or was that just wishful thinking on my side ..

and more importantly .. just how effective are they ?

I think it has gotten more nefarious, particularly with the online message board stuff, pretending to be a kid into the music when you are actually an moderately obese late 30s PC jockey in a cubicle forest in LA somewhere.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

oh, this was totally me. minus the "obese late 30s" part. for $11/hour, i used to go onto like n'sync message boards and write "omg guys, i just read this interview with like justin timberlake and he was talking about some band called THE GORILLAZ. i bet they're totally cute. check them out!!!!!!!!!!!!".

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

But they were paying you for what you did for free anyway, so it all worked out. *flees*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

But given the intense and fleeting devotion to major label bands that a 16 yr old is capable of, surely you can't blame them for harnessing this energy?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

ILM is basically a street team funded by Keving Shields and Basement Jaxx.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

DOn't forget M.I.A.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

She's the latest investor.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

I wonder how many Blue Cheer records have been sold on account of ilm.

I hear Depeche Mode have Dan in their back pocket.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Keving?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Disco Inferno funds ILM's hosting via sales of their back catalog spurred on by the group.

Xii (Xii), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

street team kids like what they do. and also the music industry wouldnt survive without them, or perhaps Gorillaz albums wouldnt sell without em.

jane (jane), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

i hate the idea of street teams. what happened to good ol' asking your friends to help you out? the moment they started appearing in DIY/indie culture, it was over.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

I hate looking at a silhouette of Dizzee Rascal every time I go to the post office because some Vice/ILXCorp. street teamer threw his sticker up on the stop sign two blocks from my house. In civilized Europe, I bet the street teams come back and remove the stickers after the band breaks up.

But but but I love you!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 March 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Anyone who helps put up flyers for your band = your friend.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 10 March 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, it does seem quite horribly cynical to me. I mean, cynical to the point where I'd really have a hard time feeling any sense of common humanity w/any of its practicioners.
