Any country except for Canada.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Marvin Gaye singing "The Star Spangled Banner" at the NBA all-star game is the greatest national anthem ever.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

les marseillaise! it's so bloodthirsty.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

Australia's is unbelievably weak

Seuss, Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

france seconded. i can't say i've heard very many though.
if marvin gaye's version was the standard though...

()ops (()()ps), Thursday, 10 March 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

The pre-war ones were better, before they all got re-written.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 10 March 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

The USA's is good becuase the lyrics are made up almost entirely of questions.

Japan's is good because where most other countries' anthems build to a climax, it just sort of runs out of steam and fades out at the end. When it's played at a sporting event, you almost expect to hear crickets chirping at the end rather than cheering.

But Jacob is otm about the pre-war anthems. Really, Deutschland uber Alles would blow all the other current anthems away.

Dr Benway (dr benway), Thursday, 10 March 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

Benway is OTM on the Japanese anthem, Kimigayo. Because our base is in Japan, they play both anthems at the end of the work day. It took me quite a few listens to get used to how the Japanese anthem ends. Inspiring lyrics, though: "May the reign of the Emperor continue for a thousand, nay, eight thousand generations and for the eternity that it takes for small pebbles to grow into a great rock and become covered with moss." I like the use of "nay."

John Fredland (jfredland), Thursday, 10 March 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

If I am to pick one other than my own country (we have a quite nice one in Norway), I think France's would be my choice.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 10 March 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

Er, "Deutschland über alles" is the current national anthem of Germany, although it's the third verse of the lyrics that is used.

I kinda like that Russia took back the Soviet-era anthem (tho, again, with new words), it's great. I'd have to pick that one in a POO.

Talking of Germany, the DDR one was good, too:
*pretty, lyrical theme*
*MARTIAL BOMBAST*
*pretty, lyrical theme (reprise)*
with hardly any transition between the parts.

May the reign of the Emperor continue for a thousand, nay, eight thousand generations and for the eternity that it takes for small pebbles to grow into a great rock

ie BACKWARDS IN TIME! cool.

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 10 March 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Biafra, once upon a(n all too brief) time, had a beautiful anthem...

(on that olden ussr anthem tho, i piss and poo profusely & unapologetically, amen)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 10 March 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

I can totally see why, t\'\'t.

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 10 March 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

>>Er, "Deutschland uber alles" is the current national anthem of Germany, although it's the third verse of the lyrics that is used.

Sorry, I originally did mean the change in lyrics, but I just went back and actually READ the lyrics and, you know, they're not really that bad at all. I apologize for perpetuating the bad rep the first two verses got after WWII.

Dr Benway (dr benway), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

The Italian anthem is great fun. All this shouting about "Fratelli d'Italia" etc. The Irish one is painful. It's just really bleak and such a downer. I'm convinced that the only reason we have a different one for our rugby team is nothing to do with the North but because we needed something rousing for a change! A fine job it's doing too. Just look at the Six Nations!

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

"Star Spangled Banner" is infinitely better than "God Bless America," however, which will probably be our official national anthem in 10-20 years, less if we get another Republican in 2008.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Australia's is tough...no-one knows the words, and if they do they can't sing past the first verse. Unnatural melody, bizarre words. I kind of dig the Star Spangled Banner, if only for the Rocket's Red Glare [KABOOM!], etc.

The Soviet one is what anthems are all about!

spencer - eat chocolate and choke.
(A JOKE!)
(not really?)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't get it. My comment was something along the lines of: anthems are all about blind and/or enforced patriotism, so the Soviet one is the prime example. I was also thinking about the "East German Anthem" from the movie Top Secret!

Hail, Hail East Germany,
Land of vine and grape,
Land where you'll regret
Any try to escape
No matter if you tunnel under,
Or take a running jump at the wall,
Forget it, the guards will kill you,
If the electrified fence doesn't first.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

... anthems are all about blind and/or enforced patriotism, so the Soviet one is the prime example.

*whose* "patriotism", spencer??

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Again, I don't understand your problem with my comment in the first place, and I don't understand your question either. Could you elaborate?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

nothing doing, then. i guess.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I'd really like to address your criticism, but I'm just not following you.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

well, i could almost echo your words in your last post, really.
okey, i'll try again - what precisely is that "patriotism" that fascinates you in that ussr anthem, could you elaborate?
and whose patriotism is that, in your opinion? and what's so great about all that?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

I also mention "enforced" patriotism. I'm thinking about anthems in the rhetorical sense. What are they meant to do and which ones are the most representative of that. I am obviously not blindly endorsing patriotism, but the mechanisms that constitute and enforce patriotism (like anthems) are interesting in a deconstruction kind of way (as in, how do we realize when we might be unconsciously participating in something wrong?).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

In other words, I never said there's anything great about "patriotism". I could mention the Red Chinese one which would make my father cover his ears.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

The National Anthem of Space

Graeme (Graeme), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

spencer, could you mean, perhaps, that you kinda like that (as it happens, essentially-abominable-to-me) ussr anthem as just a "fine tune" or something?
because as far as "patriotism" was concerned, there even never existed a "nation" ('soviet people', my ass!) whose expression of patriotism the dogawful (to my ears, yes, irreparably) anthem was supposed to be.
maybe we are on a very different wavelength on all this, re: the 'soviet' 'anthem', and we'll never be otherwise, i dunno.

ps.s ...as per "patriotism", i recall the (dunno-by-whom-ventured) bitter wording that (")when big nations are concerned, the term readily used is "patriotism" (=positive), whereas when small nations are referred to, "nationalism"(=negative!) is the handy word (")

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think you're basically completely misunderstanding what I'm saying and making incorrect assumptions about what I'm endorsing. I've explained my point in far more detail than I think was even necessary. I think I'm just going to walk away at this point.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

All right. Seems I'd better depart too, then.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...
everyone always complains about how clunky "the star spangled banner" is, but america's notable for having a ton of even worse 'unofficial' anthems - "god bless america," "god bless the usa," "the stars and stripes forever." unbelievably crass, bombastic and phony, the lot of em.

my favorite US anthem is easily "dixie." there's something so hopeful, casual, even carefree about it that it's kind of wrenching to realize it was associated with such a dismal cause.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 11 December 2005 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

Has anyone ever heard all of these verses to "O Canada"?!

Why don't we use that second verse in the English version? It actually says something about the country.

I've always thought the French version sounds better. It's certainly more anthemic though it's definitely dated and questionable in some of its claims ("des plus brillants exploits"? Like, uh, ....).

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 11 December 2005 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

Huh, the link doesn't give you the full article:

national anthem of Canada. It was proclaimed the official national anthem on July 1, 1980. God Save the Queen (q.v.) remains the royal anthem of Canada.

The music, written by Calixa Lavallée (1842–91), a concert pianist and native of Verchères, Que., was commissioned in 1880 on the occasion of a visit to Quebec by Lord Lorne (later Duke of Argyll), then governor-general of Canada, and his wife, Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise. The original French lyrics were written by Sir Adolphe Basile Routhier (1839–1920), later chief justice of Quebec. The English lyrics (which are not a translation or rendering of the French) were written in 1908 by Robert Stanley Weir (1856–1926), a lawyer and recorder of Montreal.

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot-love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free;
And stand on guard, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
O Canada! Glorious and free!
We stand on guard, we stand
on guard for thee,
O Canada! We stand on guard for thee.
O Canada! Where pines and maples grow,
Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow,
How dear to us thy broad domain,
From East to Western sea!
Thou land of hope for all who toil!
Thou True North strong and free!
O Canada! Glorious and free! [etc.]
O Canada! Beneath thy shining skies
May stalwart sons and gentle maidens rise
To keep thee steadfast thro' the years
From East to Western sea,
Our own beloved native land,
Our True North strong and free!
O Canada! Glorious and free! [etc.]
Ruler supreme, Who hearest humble pray'r,
Hold our Dominion in Thy loving care.
Help us to find, O God, in Thee
A lasting rich reward,
As waiting for the better day,
We ever stand on guard.
O Canada! Glorious and free! [etc.]

O Canada! Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Sa fière liberté;

No-one (unsurprisingly) has mentioned Englands. A terrible dirge even when played as jauntily as possible.

If only we could have Jerusalem instead - those lyrics kick ass. Also more people know the words.

I like the American one they play in the film "The Dish"

The Chilean national anthem, or the Brazilian. The Chilean is far too hard for the average mortal to sing and the Brazilian betrays the folly of military dictatorship (it's a marshal jaunt that through its sheer ridiculousness undermines all authoritarian governments).

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Sunday, 26 March 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

The old DDR one is of course still classic.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 26 March 2006 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

I don't see any DDR one. Just the joke one. Which is moderately funny.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Sunday, 26 March 2006 01:10 (nineteen years ago)

and the Brazilian betrays the folly of military dictatorship (it's a marshal jaunt that through its sheer ridiculousness undermines all authoritarian governments).

Made doubly ridiculous for me by the fact that the first few notes sound exactly like a Norwegian (children's) christmas song (for Geir: "På låven sitter nissen med sin julegrøt").

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Sunday, 26 March 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

Up to 1961 the Swiss sang something to the tune of the British hymn. Another 20 years and the current dreadful ditty was made official, which I find strange in a nation over 700 years old. It's all about God, mountain skies and cloud seas (those are cool, it's nice to live in a country where you don't have to fly to see them below you).

Paul Robeson - Anthem of the USSR
http://s55.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0SO2ITRXSNOE11PQXZHZWY6QYH

This version of the commie anthem is so rousing that I momentarily forget I'm a proud American and get misty-eyed with love for the motherland. I don't know what the hell was t\'\'t was whining about upthread, USSR Anthem 4-EVER.

However, if Australia wises up and makes "Waltzing Matilda" its anthem we will have to re-evaluate.

O-Keigh (O-Keigh), Sunday, 26 March 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

The japanese national anthem rocks. It sounds like a Fall song from 1982. A Hex out-take if you will.

Revive!

Check out the last verse of the Italian national anthem:

Italian brothers,
Italy has arisen,
With Scipio's helmet
binding her head.
Where is Victory?
Let her bow down,
For God has made her
The slave of Rome.
Let us gather in legions,
Ready to die!
Italy has called!

We for centuries
Have been downtrodden and derided,
Because we are not a people,
Because we are divided.
Let one flag, one hope
Bring us together;
The hour has struck
For us to join forces.
Let us gather in legions,
Ready to die!
Italy has called!

Let us unite and love one another;
For union and love
Reveal to peoples
The way of the Lord
Let us swear to free
Our native soil;
If we are united under God,
Who can conquer us?
Let us gather in legions,
Ready to die!
Italy has called!

From the Alps to Sicily,
Everywhere it is Legnano;
Every man has the heart
and hand of Ferruccio.
The children of Italy
Are all called Balilla;
Every trumpet blast
Sounds the (Sicilian) Vespers.
Let us gather in legions,
Ready to die!
Italy has called!

Mercenary swords
Are feeble reeds,
And the Austrian eagle
Has lost his plumes.
This eagle that drunk the blood
of Italy and Poland,
togheter with the Cossack,
But this has burned his gut.
Let us gather in legions,
Ready to die!
Italy has called!

...

It's a top tune as well.

Daniel Giraffe, Friday, 13 July 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

We had a geography computer game in public school way back in the early 90s, and though I can't remember the tune, I remember endless amusement among myself and my classmates (we were gifted, and thus, geeks) because of the Qatar theme song. Now I have to google it when I get home tonight to hear it again!

Charlie Howard, Friday, 13 July 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

Aside from the fact that Francis Scott Key poached the melody, which is nearly impossible to sing...

Here's what I came up with searching for the original lyrics which I think are pretty damn funny:

Verse
To Anacreon in Heav'n where sat in full Glee,
A few Sons of Harmony sent a Petition,
The He their Inspirer and Patron wou'd be,
when this Answer arriv'd from the Jolly Old Grecian
"Voice Fiddle and Flute no longer be mute
I'll lend you my Name and inspire you to boot
And besides I'll instruct you like me to Intwine
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine

Chorus
And besides I'll instruct you like me to intwine
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine.

Verse
The news through Olympus immediately flew;
When Old Thunder pretended to give himself Airs
If these Mortals are suffer'd their Scheme to pursue,
The Devil a Goddess will stay above Stairs.
"Hark already they cry,
"In Transports of Joy
"Away to the Sons of Anacreon we'll fly
"And there with good Fellows we'll learn to intwine
"The Myrtle of Venus and Bacchus's Vine.

Verse
"The Yellow Hair'd God and his nine fusty Maids,
"The Helicon's Banks will incontinent flee
"Idalia will boast but of tenantless Shades
"And the bi forked Hill a mere Desert will be
"My Thunder no fear on't,
"Shall soon do its Errand,
"And dam'me. I'll swinge the Ringleaders I warrant,
"I'll trim the young Dogs for thus daring to twine
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine.

Verse
Apollo rose up, and said, "Pr'ythee ne'er quarrel,
"Good King of the Gods with my Votries below:
"Your Thunder is useless then shewing his Laurel,
Cry'd. "Sic evitabile Fulmen, you know.
"Then over each Head
"My Laurels I'll spread
"So my Sons from your Crackers no Mischief shall dread,
"Whilst snug in their Club Room they Jovially twine
"The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine

Verse
Next Momus got up with his risible Phiz,
And swore with Apollo he'd chearfull Join
"The full Tide of Harmony still shall be his,
"But the Song and the Catch, the Laugh shall be mine
"Then Jove he not Jealous
"Of these honest Fellows,
Cry'd Jove "We relent since the Truth you now tell us;
"And swear by Old Styx, that they long shal intwine
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine.

Verse
Ye Sons of Anacreon then Join Hand in Hand;
Preserve Unanimity Friendship and Love.
'Tis your's to support what's so happily plann'd;
You've the Sanction of Gods and the Fiat of Jove.
While thus we agree,
Our Toast let it be.
May our Club flourish happy united and Free.
And long may the Sons of Anacreon intwine
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine.

I think it should be considered unpatriotic not to sing the second-fourth verses of The Star Spangled Banner (ie THE WHOLE SONG...it would probably take eight-ten minutes).

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

He changes the motto, even, so it will have enough syllables.

The Indian anthem might be the only one I like with any enthusiasm. It's actually kind of fun and energetic, rhythmically. At least when people do it fast rather than slow.

The Mexican National Anthem

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGbiWnoWTto

Yo se bien que estoy afuera
Pero el dia que yo me muera
Se que tendras que llorar.
(Llorar y llorar, llorar y llorar)
Diras que no me quisistes
Pero vas a estar muy triste
Y asi te me vas a quedar.

Coro:
Con dinero y sin dinero.
Yo hago siempre lo que quiero.
Y mi palabra es la ley.
No tengo trono ni reina.
Ni nadie que me comprenda.
Pero sigo siendo el rey.

Una piedra en el camino
Me enseno que mi destino.
Era rodar y rodar.
(Rodar y rodar, rodar y rodar)
Tambien me dijo un arriero
Que no hay que llegar primero
Pero hay que saber llegar.

ROUGH TRANSLATION

I know well that I'm out
But the day that I die
I know you are going to cry
You'll say that you didn't love me
But I know that you are going to be very sad
And that's the way you are going to remain

With or without money
I do whatever I want
And my word is law
I don't have throne or queen
or anybody who understands me
But I'm still the king

A simple stone on the road
Taught me that my fate
was to roll and to roll
Also a cowboy told me
You don't have to arrive first
but to know how to arrive

xxpost- That is NOT the Mexican national anthem! (Although it would be cool if it were, the anthem is so belligerent)

A few years ago I was travelling and bored and started listening to all the national anthems and ranking them. Didn’t finish, only got halfway through, but Bangladesh was the leader by a mile
