From an email from my friend from Vice:

And THEN in April we're going to have Annie over to DJ and sing live with us in April - 14th or 15th... You should def. come down for that.. And feel free to post any/all of this, too.

More info to come, but who else is going to come out for this? I'm pretty psyched.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I'd be there!

We can share middle initials, Matthew.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

two bad it's not two weeks later

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

i'll go to that!

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

That will be my birthday present to myself.

dan. (dan.), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

wordyrappington (wordyrappington), Thursday, 10 March 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Is this record going to be released domestically?

Gbro, Friday, 11 March 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. In May.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

i think heartbeat is going to be the first single

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

Dear ILMers,
You'll know me by my red boutonniere.
-p.t.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 11 March 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

"Where" is part of "more info to come." I don't know. Probably at a bar/club rather than a typical live music venue.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 March 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

I am melting in a pile of goo! Ooo!! So v. there.

jae (jazzler), Friday, 11 March 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
has anyone heard anything further on this? might we be a little over a week away from an annie performance?

rajeev (rajeev), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

I heard the other day that she can only perform a couple songs as it stands, so the performance is going to be postponed for further practice time.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

But she could just be spinning, cos she's a dj too, inn'shee?

jae (jazzler), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

hmmm, i just came across this:

Norwegian pop princess Annie is on the march, and shall arrive on our shores this Monday. The details of her appearances in New York are as follows:

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

fuck. my plane ticket back to new york isn't until the 13th! i thought the show was going to be on the 15th! GAAAAAH! and its a non-refundable, non-changeable ticket!@#$. im supposed to be styling a photo shoot with her though. hope that works out

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 8 April 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

Correct info: re Annie in NYC via Brooklyn Vegan

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2005/04/the_correct_ann.html

Annie is playing live for FREE at Tribeca Grand on Thursday night. RSVP NECESSARY: sessions@tribecagrand.com

She's also doing 'closed session' at Sirius satellite radio on Tuesday and DJing Saturday at Misshapes.

Her album comes out June 7th in the United States on Big Beat Records (an affiliate of Atlantic Records) (not Vice anymore).

I'm assuming that this is all for the upcoming April week. Seems like you can see her perform after all, phil-two.

jae (jazzler), Monday, 11 April 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Time?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

ooh nice. yeah and its sponsored by christiana vodka, so im guessing open bar. woo.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

What happened to the Vice deal? I secretly kind of thought it was cool that Vice had it. They were getting really interesting, between that and the domestic release of "Seadrum/House of Sun"

Waking Up Onstage at Jumbo's (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

http://upcoming.org/event/16847/

I am guessing she is going on at 9 PM on Thursday?

jae (jazzler), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I'll most likely be at the session at the Tribeca Grand. If any of you can't get reservations for one reason or another, get in touch with me soon, cos I can probably get you in with me as long as you don't intend on bringing a huge posse with you.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Also, I am told by people from Vice/people running the party that Annie will be going on around 12:00. So that's pretty reliable.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

This is the proper line-up for tomorrow night:

Thursday, April 14th 9pm

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

is tribeca grand always 21+?

lemin (lemin), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

they sometimes check ids. not always. you can always try walking thru the front door real confident and act like you're staying in a room there. or you're visiting your uncle who's staying in a room there. or you're a callgirl visiting a client who's staying in a room there. or something like that

im so happy that this is on tomorrow and not yesterday

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

be nice guys

Nick Sylvester, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

or you're a callgirl visiting a client who's staying in a room there. or something like that

i think i'll try this one. THEY CAN'T KEEP ME OUT! I'LL FOOL THEM

lemin (lemin), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Oy, so late on a work night? I'm such an old lady. I'm going to have to take a nap beforehand!

jae (jazzler), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

if they card me i will VOMIT IN ANGER. i should go dressed as a concierge or something.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 14 April 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

bump bump b-bump

so anyone who went - what did y'all think?

joseph (joseph), Friday, 15 April 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

too many plaid shirts, not enough pony tails

Nick Sylvester, Friday, 15 April 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

ugh it was awful,

philtwo not at home, Friday, 15 April 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

Huh? More details!

Waking Up Onstage at Jumbo's (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 15 April 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

details!

piscesboy, Friday, 15 April 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

all things considered i didn't think it was awful at all. it was like her fifth gig, she's trying to transfer a studiomagic record into a passable live performance (and she will at some point, first thing she needs to do is get the vocal mix right and, yikes, sing louder), the band's (opl bastards) a bit sessiony because hey, they live in finland and don't get to rehearse with her that much, i think they're happy just to have these songs down. also i saw the sirius show on tuesday, and it was really dreadful (she performed in a studio fishbowl, everyone else had to stand outside the studio and listen), so my expectations weren't too high.

set was:

intro
helpless fool for love
too late
chewing gum
come together
wedding (a new song that is very hilarious, lyrics are: "will you marry me? (i do i do i do)".
--
heartbeat

funny awesome things:

-for the back-up vocals on chewing gum, timo did everything on vocoder, the mix was off but i thought it was hilarious
-any time timo did something-- like anything, something as simple as triggering a sample or whatever-- he would celebrate, dance really hard and doing the thing where you dance really hard and drink a beer

really awesome things:

-before the show annie kissed me on the cheek

Nick Sylvester, Friday, 15 April 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

I'll second most of what Nick's saying; it was a LOT of build up for a short but sweet set that was chock fulla obnoxious hipsters (it was shoulder to shoulder in there, which did not stop about thirty kids from storming the middle of the room and violently dirty dancing in a really aggressively ugly fashion). They're CERTAINLY not a live band per se and there were all sorts of technical errors, but Annie herself was really charming and the songs, performed live, really held up for me.
"Wedding" in particular (unreleased and I want a copy NOW NOW NOW) was supergood, '1999'-era Prince and a definite future hit. I bounced when people started screaming "HEARTBEEEEEEEEEEAT!" as I'm not a fan of that cut, but I definitely enjoyed the show.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

She was good. It wasn't at all what I expected musically and I thought it worked. The band was great but that crowd was one of the worst I have ever seen. More "violently dirty dancing in a really aggressively ugly fashion" please.

dan. (dan.), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

another funny thing about the crowd, people started leaving after the first note! the room was literally half as packed by mid-set (she got better with each song i thought), and by the end i had plenty of room to do the dance with my bag thing

Nick Sylvester, Friday, 15 April 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

The band was having fun even tho I agree with much of what everyone was saying. Annie did seem a bit deer in headlights, but they may have been the gazillion camera flashing in her face, blinding her. Wedding was totally brill. I was hoping she'd play Me Plus One, cos I love the Geri Halliwell references, hee.

It was really the crowd that ruined the night. Surrounded by girls who were TALLER than me while whining about OMG why is the tall dude in the front hogging space, insisting upon elbowing me and shoving me merely because they thought they were thinner and prettier than me. I wanted to turn around and slog them with their own Gucci bags, I did. I have no patience for the pretty girls that populate NYC sometimes.

jae (jazzler), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

It would've been fine by me dan, if there was any fucking room at all. As it stood, I saw some lil' cutie girls getting pushed HARD into the wall by assholes charging center stage. Just a case of too many people at one gig to really dance, unless Three Inches of Blood was on. Then it woulda been fun to pick out targets and throw 'bows.
Incidentally (and I'll probably catch shit for this), Annie LIVE didn't really make me want to dance. What dan says about being not "at all what I expected musically" is accurate; come together was some sort of psych rock overture, the intro was more IDM than anything, Wedding was a fucktune, chewing gum was (sadly) too disjointed and silly to dance to, only fool for love was ready for dancefloor action. She's still getting the bugs outta the show, but I have no doubt that when she does it'll be a fascinating genre salami.

Xpost, Nick I dunno where you were but it never got less crowded from my spot. I _DID_ see a couple of people leaving after the first song; I suppose they got their cellphone photos as headhunter proof and were off to bigger and better.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

i think it's strange people love her so much. the album is fun I guess. but it's not much better than most studio pop out there. why an artist like annie is forgiven for putting on half assed shows, ie: sloppy is beyond me. A new indie rock band having only performed five times probably wouldn't be so easily forgiven.

breezy, Friday, 15 April 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

she really, really should've been miked louder and i agree, that crowd was lame (i was standing near the front so i didn't see any of these dancing kids you're all talking about, it was so crowded i was doing my "really-into-the-music-but-respectful-of-yr-space dance"). i still thought annie's charm penetrated through the less-than-good aspects of the night and i'm glad i was able to see it. and yeah, "the wedding" was friggin' awesome (potential b-side?)

joseph (joseph), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

she needs a new stylist.

and her band needs to be cuter.

philtwo not at home, Friday, 15 April 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I wish that I had seen Tofu and Nicky Sylvester! I was there with Eppy and hanging around some other NYC bloggy people that I'm familiar with.

I thought it was pretty good considering that they don't perform very often. The vocal mix was too low, but whatever. "Chewing Gum" and "The Wedding" were the highlights for sure - that's when the band sounded most confident, hitting upon a kinda mid-period Talking Heads + Kylie sort of sound. Very promising. Within a year or so, they should be pretty great, but for now it was definitely above average.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

i just got back and it was so-so. tired too. crowded. the music was fairly heavy. i think i heard some electric 6. I'd never been to Mishapes, they love the Futureheads, who knew.

dan. (dan.), Sunday, 17 April 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

Also, i left before she finished

dan. (dan.), Sunday, 17 April 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

drunk asian wearing greenish velvet jacket over pink tshirt alternating between dancing and frowning.

phil, you frown better than almost anyone i know.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 17 April 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

dan OTM. except about the Futureheads - the only thing I heard of theirs was the Hounds of Love vocals over some electronic track. which was pretty cool.

Annie didn't put anything on until way late and there was a slew of turntable issues. interestingly enough, the two songs that got the crowd going the most were Hollaback Girl and Banquet. it wasn't really the most challenging of sets.

but she is pretty, isn't she? and all the best songs were ones she wrote.

lemin (lemin), Sunday, 17 April 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

then again, i too left before everyone finished.

lemin (lemin), Sunday, 17 April 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

Annie didn't put anything on until way late

!

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 April 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

People around me freaked for that futureheads song and were all "is this the block party or bravery?". seriously.

dan. (dan.), Sunday, 17 April 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

i didn't go to misshapes either but damn that alldisco thing sounded like fun!! :(

joseph (joseph), Sunday, 17 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

(and can i just say that this notion of free pizza at every hip nyc thing is CLASSIC?)

joseph (joseph), Sunday, 17 April 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

The Annie thing was pretty fun, but not really any different than any Misshapes thing.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Sunday, 17 April 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

i really can't stand misshapes and avoid it like the plague, though a couple bad experiences may have tainted me.

i'm bummed about missing alldisco though, i really wanted to go. (but sonic youth at maxwell's made up for it and then some.)

rajeev (rajeev), Sunday, 17 April 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
is anyone going to see annie tonite? apparently there will be songs from the new album, though im not sure if they mean the old new album or an altogether new new album.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

i forgot about it until just now, but im not really that excited about it, but i figure may as well go? i dunno. i need a haircut though.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Why must you play in the middle of the week Annie?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

but...is she performing or just spinning?

django (django), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

didnt go. played video games instead. dont really feel like i missed anything, so i guess thats ok.

she was supposed to be performing. i think also again on wednesday at some new corny club - i forgot the name.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

scenic

yeah, not bothering. hiro wouldn't have let me in and i don't know where the fuck this scenic place is.

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

also, seen her once already, wasn't exactly dazzled, etc etc

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to see her at sonotheque. anyone else going to be there? I cant wait to meet peoples from the internets!!!!

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the first show at the tribeca was pretty underwhelming. so much so, that i pretty much lost all interest in annie. jumping the shark, or however the saying goes.

why won't hiro let you in?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

not 21

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

i also think i feel the same way, oddly enough

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

(re: jumping the shark that is)

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

oh. dont you have a fake id? any terrible one will do. mine is real, but its an expired illinois drivers license (expired in march 2001). it says UNDER 21 all over it, because its supposed to expire when you turn 21. doenst really look like me that much anymore. oh, and the state of illinois has since changed the deisgn of the drivers license from the laminated thing to a credit-card like thing. so basically, it looks totally fake. but no one cares.

yeah, its like after that show, i'm not really even sure i purposely listened to annie on my ipod/itunes. it just came up on random, and i would just sigh and change it. but oh how much i loved her and was so excited for the show.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

no fake, but i am "of age" in september so i'm not bothering (really wish i had though, as there have been a number of things this year that i've wanted to attend, primarily alldisco parties, that wouldn't let me in)(also my nj driver's-license-that-lets-me-do-everything-except-drive looks completely fake to everyone anyway, enough that the webster hall people gave me some shit for it when i saw lcd soundsystem a few weeks ago)

i can't fathom that i actually wrote "i liked the band" upthread: if anything, i really wanted her to just sing over the backing track like a proper pop star dammit, but yeah, i was super-stoked that i was let into that show at the time, and now the enthusiasm's waned to the point where my friends make snide, sarcastic comments about how the annie album is LIKE THE GREATEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD MAN and i don't have the energy/will to defend it

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i don't HATE it or even dislike it. i dunno, maybe by the end of the year i'll have gone back to loving it again.

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

hahaha i wonder how dan selzer would feel knowing there are armies of underaged gay guys dying to go to his dance party!!

i posted on the ilx-sightingts thread, but i think i saw you on the mainfloor from the balcony at the lcd soundsystem show. you were like the only person dancing and your shirt was so bright.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

i can't really listen to "chewing gum" anymore.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

hahah dan played at some NYU event and i totally missed it!! (it wasn't well-advertised at all, plus it was some LGBT thing and i usually avoid those like the plague)

hmm, i don't remember what i wore to that show but i DID dance like a fiend (without the aid of alcohol -> a first!), conveniently in front of the ONLY GIRL WHO WASN'T MOVING AN INCH AND WAS FROWNING FOR THE ENTIRE FUCKING SHOW. i swear at one point i heard her complain to her man-thing about how i kept making her spill her drink and i was ready to just take it and throw it in her face. HAVE ONE GOOD TIME, LADY.

i put "me plus one" on recently and still enjoyed it a lot, but was dismayed by the fact that i had to practically force myself to do it

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

oh. i just looked up scenic. its the old save the robots/guernica space. on avenue B.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

oh wow, that isn't far from my friend's apt (the guy i went to see annie with the first time around) at all. but i imagine he went to tonight's show anyway.

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

so did anyone go to this last night? i too took a pass, esp. since the tribeca show in april did nothing for me.

rajeev (rajeev), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Joseph I somehow dropped you from my blogroll i think. you were on it right?

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

the show tonight (and last night) is 'anniemal'. it's annie singing with timo on mpc 2000, decks and fx. i saw it in bergen, norway on saturday night and it was pretty entertaining.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

i believe so, deej...yr still on mine if that's coo'

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

I'm wondering what exactly people are expecting from this "show." I'm eagerly expecting a loud, haphazardly choreographed and possibly lip-synced hits review with screaming fans.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Yeah thats fine, i'll add you to mine. can you link me to it? I'm at work so I don't have my bookmarks.

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

yoink

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to see her at sonotheque. anyone else going to be there? I cant wait to meet peoples from the internets!!!!

it's about fucking time!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I think PL is gonna be there too, and Erick B. from stylus. My friends are flaking last minute, but we'll see; i'm supposed to help someone move during the day, maybe I can convince them to join.

What time do you think we should show up to make sure we get in?

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Who's PL?

I have no idea what time we should get there. I'd rather play it safe, though, even if just to avoid waiting in line. (I waited an hour to get into Prefuse 73 there once, and when I got to the door realized I'd left my ID at home.)

Hmmm, I can't seem to find a time listed on the website.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, PL = Scott Plagenheof.

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Oh, duh.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

When she plays Sonotheque this month, the set will be half live, half DJ with Timo on keyboards, sequencers and turntables. But don't expect a choreographed routine รก la Britney Spears or Madonna. "I'm not dancing so much, but sometimes, a little bit," she says. "I should probably do it more."

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Time Out says the show starts at 10, with Timo doing a DJ set on his own first. What do you think?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to try and get over to sonotheque at 10 - is that too early? I've never been over there before (living in new orleans)... is this more like a club or lounge?

temeraire (r h), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

I was gonna go around 10, too, I think.

I guess it's more like a lounge. My experience with both clubs (non-rock) and lounges is sadly not much. But it's fairly small. There's a couple of couches along the wall. There's a narrow dance floor.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

cheap beer though. And its pretty sexxxy lighting and great soundsystem. I think i'll prolly head over around 10 too...better one hour early than 5 minutes late, as my grandfather would say.

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

So I don't have to get all dressed up, right? I might actually be there earlier, my girls are always running late so I'll try to leave asap. Have you heard anything about the kompakt records "show" @ metro next month - i'm assuming it is just a dj? no? anyway, i'll definately be there, just curious.

temeraire (r h), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

I finally heard this krap on a listening station and it seemed like "chewing gum" was every other track...
