Kym quits Hearsay

So, Kym has supposedly quit the band (although pinch of salt at the ready, i read this in the Metro). They were due to play a gig for troops in Oman and she quit when she found out a BBC crew was going along with them. Supposedly she thought it was nothing but a 'shameless publicity stunt'.

Erm...surely their whole career has been a publicity stunt and there's no point getting all concerned about it now? Was it simply a step too far?

Is this the end for the band? Was it an expirement that was always doomed to fail? Has it failed? Do we care?

Hearsay, Steps... Westlife next, Westlife next, Westlife next

what surprised me is that it was only on about page 10 of metro, i thought it would have been bigger news than that? this is what makes me take it with a pinch of salt (i'm off to check some news sites now to see how true it is?)

but it does seem that the huge level of interest in hear-say faded quite quickly, and that, rather than bailing out very early, best hopes of a solo career would be best served by her leaving at this point?

It was in the Sun too, who expounded the view that it was also to do with the fact that she and Mylene constantly argue, Kym getting annoyed with Mylene being seen as some sort of leader of the band, while Mylene gets annoyed at Kym getting the lead singing bits.

I hasten to add that this was the copy of the Sun that I picked up on the tube, I didn't buy it or owt.

Kym of course roXoR and if this tale is kosher i am hugely vindicated i think:
a. she appears not to haf attended the same Cynicism Abt the Music Industry seminar as hear'say's exploitas AND their hatas (the indie massive's patronising and snobby assumptions about the winners of the Pop Starz competition being essentially IDENTICAL in content to the record company's assumptions, in re manipulation, lack of principle, lack of talent blah blah: identically wrong IMO)
b: twice (and now possibly three times?) Kym has delivered a performance which in existential risk and content dwarfs the run- of-the-mill work dribbling out of rock ordinaire, mainstream AND off-mainstream. First was of course her tantrum at being told fat was out: where she risked a future that had NOT yet been established to let her supposed puppetmasters where the line was drawn (given how much she was depending on WINNING, this was fucking daring thing to do, tho shrewd too, which is of course why she won and the p-masters backed hurriedly down hurrah). Two was her stupendous perf on worthless punk sellout showcase NEVA MIND THE BOLLOXoR when she smart-talked back at professional alt.careerist and talent- free pimple mark lamarr (He: "Where will you be in a year's time?" She: "You've been sitting there for EIGHT fuXoR etc").

Interesting and telling also that the battle has been between proud musohead Myleen (Royal Callege graduate) and unbiddable northern-scum achiever Kym, eg between prog and punk as ever was...

I don't know much about Hear'say, but the Australian equivalent Bardot had a member leave after their first album... they subsequently fired the management that built them, revamped their image with emphasis on sexy for the second album and now have a) a surprising level of critical support, and b) only slightly diminished sales.

I don't know what all this means, except maybe that facelessness can actually be a strength because you then have the luxury to build a group personality. Contrast with the Spice Girls, whose personality was so fully-formed from the get-go that their entire career was like a slow slide downwards from that initial highpoint (note: I have no idea of Hear'say's relative level of facefulness/facelessness).

i think the machine-prefab process for these made-for-TV bands *weakens* the power of the faceless backroom boys, and (potentially) strengthens any upfront playas willing to tackle script-and-vision roles BUT they haf had little time to bed down w.one another as ppl (rockbands by pre-fame gigging have settled into one another's behaviour, as least in the medium term; boybands usually haf extensive rehearsal time etc to do same; made-for-TV can use friction between band and management to their advantage but NOT internal friction)

interesting that spicers downplayed from outset their OWN role in control and direction of careers (at least this is what Raw Spice implied): they liked to be seen as mere puppets of management when actually they had aread kicked one management to the kerb by time of 1996 arrival...

The Irish one was announced last night. And they were all introducing themselves to the camera and one of the girls says "I was born on the 5th of June 1985.................................................................. .....er I mean 1983". And so after long interviews and tears and her saying "I promise you, I'm 18", she eventually admitted off camera that she had been lying all along. Kicked out of the band. Very voyeuristic to watch. Trust RTE to fuck up even the simplest imported programme.

(i forgot in my kym-for-president rant her YAY-UNMARRIED-MUMS admission, which she handled so effectively that even THO she had broken their rules they had to grit their teeth and carry on hurrah... but the rule your gal had broken ronan is likely linked into an EQUITY law or irish equiv, eg all contracts invalid unless her parents bring powerful showbiz lawyer into the mix)
