basement jaxx - "oh my gosh"

i realize that we've already talked about this a bit on the rolling bjaxx thread, but i think it deserves a space of its own.

my thoughts: its the quintessential "best of" single in that its made almost entirely out of ingredients from the back of the band's cupboard. if you were to level a criticism against it, i guess it'd be that its not as fresh as what we're used to hearing from basement jaxx. that said, despite the recycled sounds and motifs, i think the tune is great, the performances are fantastic and the production is lean and thrilling. in fact i would almost certainly include this in a bjaxx POX, and im a little surprised that more people aren't talking it up...

oh! and the video is the best clip they've made in yonks:

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 March 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I feel the same way. I liked it when I first heard it, but lately I've been going back to it a lot. Certainly one of their best. I keep singing to myself, "how many sugars do you like in your tea?"

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 March 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Geez, I don't know a lot of Basement Jaxx, so I don't know where it fits into their ouevre, but this is great.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm a huge Basement Jaxx fan but I have not listened to this track more than a couple times.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

What a neat video.

adam (adam), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

It's all about that submerged bass for me.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

It's no "Toxic" (what is?) but I like it.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

It's hardly, like, a shockingly good track, its very much a basement jaxx track as far as they have a phenotype song style, but it is great, no question.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

It is definitely in my top ten singles of 2005:Q1, maybe top five.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

I really should have saved my "Toxic" line for sometime when Ned's floating around.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

I keep singing to myself, "how many sugars do you like in your tea?"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

i don't think it would my Jaxx top 50, still aight tho

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Video clip is great, very much an update/improvement of Wookie's "What's Going On?"

It's a Kish Kash outtake, yeah? I can understand why it' wasn't on the album, it's a lot lighter and less knockout bombastic than all the big tracks but too poppy to act as a balancing album track like "Tonight" or something.

Apparantly the duo are thinking of releasing a lot of the outtakes on an EP or something. This may have been reported here before, I can't remember.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

The fact that it feels like Jaxx-Track Refined Prototype is kind of what I like best about it: there's something kind of neat about acts trying to typify themselves, and I think it does kind of pay off here.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah this is totally top 5 of 2005 for me as well. in fact i'll go one further and say its better than half of kish kash!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

the bad half, yes

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

"bad half"?

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

um, i meant that its mostly good, not all bad.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

I am glad you find my foibles so chuckleworthy, Adam.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

alright "not as good half" FINE.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

and of course if someone thinks its better than half of jaxx they mean the half that's not as good. Ignore me.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

I really should have saved my "Toxic" line for sometime when Ned's floating around.

And if it made any sense. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

while i certainly like it more than "plug it in" and "cish cash", i basically agree with tim that it has no place on the last album. it's so nimble and slinky, it has way more in common with rooty that way.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. It's definitely a good best of track. It kind of bears the same relationship to the Jaxx's recent work as Kylie's "I Believe In Love" did to hers: splitting the difference between the two most recent albums, looking back while looking forward to whatever's next (the one sense in which "Oh My Gosh" is undeniably nu-Jaxx is the extent to which it implies a future in production work for other artists even more strongly than Kish Kash).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

The thing is, I can definitely sense an undesirable self-conscious STYLE creeping in, like Tim how you were talking about Premier's become a one-trick artist over time, and how Timbaland's at his best when he resists it...i'd say the same is true of the jaxx.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Do we know who the female vocalist is yet? She reminds me a little of Lady Sovereign, but only a little. She's magnificent, anyway.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

i have been playing the "jaxx club mix" of this like crazy. it's very electro-housey, but still with the jaxx samba-house flavor. (knarz bass synths + spanish guitar a la "rendez-vou" = strange and nice)

basquiat (disco stu), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

mark can you gmail a guy?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it's the same as gmailing a girl, just with a different subtesxt.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

"The thing is, I can definitely sense an undesirable self-conscious STYLE creeping in, like Tim how you were talking about Premier's become a one-trick artist over time, and how Timbaland's at his best when he resists it...i'd say the same is true of the jaxx. "

Dee I do know exactly what you mean but it's important to remember that "Oh My Gosh" was initially an outtake, and it's contextual role is pretty unique. To date the Jaxx have always been stretching their aesthetic, so i don't know if one song is enough to suggest the universe is gonna start shrinking again.

Yeah there's an identifiable Jaxx aesthetic, but only in a very broad sense such that I think they've in no way developed that "quality production line feel". It's analogous to "Get On Dis Motorcycle" being part of the broad Timbaland aesthetic (imaginative arrangements) but not so much the narrow Timbaland aesthetic (good twisty beats).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

the version i have sounds v. poorly mixed, so i think that's the reason i haven't listened to it much. maybe i shld re-download. have the other new tracks from the singles comp emerged? btw, on the new lady sov site there's a mention of a possible future collab w bjaxx.

jermaine (jnoble), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Tim - yeah I def. see what you're saying, I think perhaps because I'm recieving it as if it was "new material" is why I'm not, like, as blown away by it as some, whereas I'm sure I'd love it if it had leaked right before kish kash.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

btw, on the new lady sov site there's a mention of a possible future collab w bjaxx.

omg that would be fabulous!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

(poorly mastered, i mean. i wanna hear that club mix bad. shld we take this to gmail?)

jermaine (jnoble), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

omg that would be fabulous!

Okay, now you're just doing it on purpose.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

I would sweat blood over a Lady Sov/Jaxx track.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

my excitement over any pending Sov/Jaxx track is tempered only by the thought of having to deal with all the MIA issues again with Sov, with the same people.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

what why when how?

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

club mix:

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

whoa this is supersexy. Yay club mix!

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

Do we know who the female vocalist is yet?

The wonderfully named Vula Malinga, who is, I think, but I'm not entirely sure, the, erm, tubby singer from the Kish Kash tour.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

is that her in the video?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah the singer in the video seems to be the singer from the tour.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 10 March 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Adam, I really don't know what you're talking about! I would be genuinely excited about a Lady Sov / B. Jaxx collab -- who wouldn't be?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

I didn't like the song much when I heard it, then I saw the video and loved that. Now I can't hear the song without thinking of the video.

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

The Club mix is great!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Adam, I am still waiting.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

"Have the other new tracks from the singles comp emerged?"

I think there's only one more new track -- "U Don't Know Me" -- which I'm not crazy about. It's a little bit "Good Luck" lite, except less spry and more grinding.

brittle-lemon, Friday, 11 March 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

(the one sense in which "Oh My Gosh" is undeniably nu-Jaxx is the extent to which it implies a future in production work for other artists even more strongly than Kish Kash).

This just in: 'Oh My Gosh' not as good as JC Chasez's 'Shake It'.

Also, according to one live review, Vula was the Siouxsie tour stand-in in the catsuit. This means we'll never know Catsuit's true name because the review was WRONG.

BARMS, Friday, 11 March 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh my gosh, the Michel Gondry video for Devendra Banhart on that site is beautiful.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Best thing they've done in years.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Friday, 11 March 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

This is my favourite single of 2005 thus far. Vula Malinga sounds so much like Jeanine Jacques on "I Luv You" that I had to go off a-Googling to find out who they both were.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

what's Jeanine done since 'I Luv U'?

Sven Bastard (blueski), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Here she is: http://www.thp-online.com/jeanine/

JoB (JoB), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

the bugz in the attic mix might be even better! (and no, i dont have it, i'm going on samples)

jermaine (jnoble), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

bugz in the attic mix IS better

a, Friday, 11 March 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

none of the mixes really blew me away! I'll give them another listen though.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Adam, I am still waiting.

I'm saying that you are camping it up a bit.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I like it, though.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

What a great video!!

sleep (sleep), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

And I like the song too of course

sleep (sleep), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

The Bugz in the Attic mix is available at http://djmonstermo.blogspot.com/2005/03/basement-jaxx-oh-my-gosh-bugz-in-attic.html, by the way.

Fresh! [/Kool and the Gang voice]
