Last week i managed to get hold of the Castle Music CD version of Nick Nicely's Psychotropia compilation, and my god it's fantastic. The single "Hilly Fields (1892)", one of my very favourite songs from the 1980s, is of course present and wonderful and every inch the lost classic. but the rest of the tracks on this thing are strong, too. lots of lovely analog eletronica mixed with pop-psych and a joy from start to finish. anyone else had the pleasure?

1892? That can genuinely be called seminal.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

that's part of the title. it came out in 1982.

to the greater ILX-en: for a change, this would be a good time not to ignore me as per usual. i think a lot of you will love this stuff. xtc fans in particular (Andy Partridge is a big fan and claims Hilly Fields was part of his inspiration for the Dukes Of Stratosphear stuff...)

I think I must've had my copy of Psychotropia by the time this thread started so surprised I didn't chime in. Yeah it's great. A little spotty as a whole CD, maybe.

i'd agree with that.. though there's some tremendous gems amongst the later stuff

i know he's been recording in recent years since the comp came out (as well as doing gigs).. i hope he puts some of it out sometime.

I think he was one of those guys who got major label flirtation and was then let down badly at some point. Hopefully in the digital age he could a) make some interesting new stuff and b) be able to get it out to people thru the magic of the Internet.

Hilly Fields is great (I live near the real Hilly Fields and they're something of a disappointment given the scale of the song). It has a slightly lame stone circle as well.

love it so much. most of his latterday stuff has that vibe. perhaps he is the original chillwaver.

Had psychotropia on my desktop for about a year. Put it on my phone today forgetting what it was. Mind split open.

disappointed that he seems to be getting the runaround with the release of his new stuff, though i don't know if that's because the labels are flakey or if he is difficult to work with

exciting! but i'm confused. it claims this to be the first new stuff in 30 years. last year's burger cassette, which is fantastic, was apparently new material. maybe there was some miscommunication? anyway, great news.

andrew m., Friday, 30 November 2012 20:05 (twelve years ago)

nevermind. mystery solved. just learned this is from the very tape i CLAIM to love. i should look at track names occasionally.

andrew m., Friday, 30 November 2012 20:21 (twelve years ago)

stoked for this
