Holy Shite... I just spent $100.90 at Tower Records...

Those bastards ALWAYs get me. I was headed towards the subway and thought, "Oh. Yea. I need to pick up a lightbulb... Oh, there's Tower. I guess I'll go in and see if anything's on sale or whatever."

They're having the hugest goddamn sale right now. I got eleven albums (some of which I've had mp3s/scratched up burned copies of for a while) on the cheap. Here's what I picked up and for how much:

$7.99
Devo - Q: Are We Not Men?
Pretenders - S/T
Neil Young - After the Goldrush
Cars - S/T
Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark

$8.99
Pavement - Brighten the Corners
Bjork - Post
Bauhaus - In the Flat Field
Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
Pixies - Bossanova
Pixies - Trompe le Monde

Pretty good haul, eh? I know this isn't, like, the motherload or anything, but it's kind of ridiculous because I got "let go" from my job two days ago and my name is POORtheatre for a reason... I wish I would have done this before I turned in my 70s ballot, I've got five contenders here.

Name your personal favorite and least favorite.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

It's "-lode", if you care. Um fav would be I guess a tossup between "After the Goldrush" and "Bossanova", least either Bauhaus or Pavement. Actually Bauhaus easy, I really like "Shady Lane".

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

It's "-lode", if you care.

Argh. I do care, especially because I'm trying to hone my copyedititing skills... I'm obviously a little careless on ILM, though.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

My favorite of these is prob. Neil Young or The Pretenders. All pretty good records but I'm not crazy about Trompe.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

Some fine choices there, although that Joni Mitchell disc would make for a fine coaster.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Are these sales chain-wide, or just at your local store?

Michael Copeland, Friday, 11 March 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

-----------* BOSSANOVA *---------------

Si Carter (Si Carter), Friday, 11 March 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)

I'm not sure if it's chain-wide, although all the Tower Records stores I've been to usually have something decent on sale. A couple months ago my location was selling, like, fifty copies of Loveless for $6.99... And all the Joy Division albums are on infini-sale.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 11 March 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

And, er, um, I'm not crazy about Heaven... but I suspect I'm in the minority there. (Ditto Bossanova, actually, but hey).

(xpost)

Si Carter (Si Carter), Friday, 11 March 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

alex in nyc should be somewhere else.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 11 March 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

Not trying to be mean / cynical, but I'm very careful about buying sorta "back catalog" records at all these days (you buy 'em, you listen to 'em and nod, you store 'em...and that's it). Anyway, wouldn't pay more than $5 for any of these, but depends on where you shop.
(me in NYC, for this kind of catalog stuff, I go to Academy on 18th)

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 11 March 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

alex in nyc should be somewhere else.

Tough Tits, Toots!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 March 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

HAha, yeah my first thought on reading that list was that Joni Mitchell seemed to be "the one that didn't belong".

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 11 March 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

I was there 2 days ago.

I bought

Bruce Springsteen - Darkness On the Edge of Town (7.99)
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Today's the Day - In the eyes of God
Beatles - Sgt. Peppers

and at Other Music I got
Electric Eels - The Beast Presents...

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 11 March 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

I need some money :(

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

ohh

and when I was there (march 9th), I looked up and who was next to me but the guy from the Counting Crowes! And he was buying a shitload of music. The only one I could see was Lou Reed's transformer

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm very careful about buying sorta "back catalog" records at all these days (you buy 'em, you listen to 'em and nod, you store 'em...and that's it).

Yea, totally. I never listen to all that old back catalogue crap anymore that I own. I mean, The Pixies are great band, but they're more of a historical artifact almost. Same with Neil Young, too. And the Cocteau Twins. I mainly just buy their records so I can say that I own them and have an opinion of them, but they really give me no pleasure-- at least, nothing on the level of the rapturous, full-body eudaimonia I experience while listening to I am a Bird Now...

Okay, I'm being sarcastic. What are you talking about!? I mean, I understand what you're saying about "back catalogue" indie canon kind of albums, but you really listen to them once and then shelve them? Maybe we just have, er, different, er, taste...?

Anyway, wouldn't pay more than $5 for any of these, but depends on where you shop.

Where would you get these CDs for $5.00? I doubt you could buy any of these used for five bucks unless they were "as is, missing disc" or something. you're reminding me of my girlfriend's tragically hip roommate that's always like, "How much did that tofu cost?...Huh...Oh, nothing. It's just, I know this place in Chinatown where you can get that much tofu for, like, two bucks."

(me in NYC, for this kind of catalog stuff, I go to Academy on 18th)

Like Momus said in another thread, I never go above 14th Street haha, but I will if this Academy place is selling CDs for $5. Sounds great. 18th b/w what and what?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Where would you get these CDs for $5.00?

ebay!

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

and the rest of youse, quit yer Joni Mitchell bellyachin'! Blue is great, and C&S Spark is one of my gal's favorite albums. I gotsta branch out, you know.

(Also, I'm going to Amoeba in SF early next week. Just wait until my post after that. It will be something like, "Holy Shite...I just spent $300.90 at Amoeba Records...Oh yea, still recovering from kidney removal surgery.)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

Poortheater: Academy Records is on 18th St. between 6th and 5th Aves.

Meanwhile, I can't believe y'all let this go, from the top o' the thread:

> I'm trying to hone my copyedititing skills

:)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 11 March 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

and the rest of youse, quit yer Joni Mitchell bellyachin'!

Listen, man, you did ask us to name our personal favorites and least favorites.

Oh, my fave of your recent lot is Q: Are We Not Men?.... I only hope it didn't get contaminated by the Joni Mitchell disc on your walk home.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 March 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

I only hope it didn't get contaminated by the Joni Mitchell disc on your walk home.

aaaahahahahaha I think it did. I was wondering why mark mothersbaugh's voice sounded so...so...unified and...insightful.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 11 March 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

There are quite a few CD's (all of them, actually) for $6 at yourmusic.com, but it's BMG Direct if you have any qualms about that.

Matt Chesnut, Friday, 11 March 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

Would someone please agree with me that the first side of said Devo album is better than the second or am I on crack?

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

All my favorite songs are on side one...

Don't Ever Antagonize The Horny (AaronHz), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

i spent $100 just on julian cope records last week.

most of the titles you listed are also on sale at my store, only my store being the big rip that it is they're "marked down" to only $9.99. i bought "post" myself!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

alex in nyc, do you actually genuinely not like joni mitchell at all? or do you just feel responsible for not liking joni mitchell?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

Would someone please agree with me that the first side of said Devo album is better than the second or am I on crack?

You may still be on crack, Bimble, but you're right in that the first side is superior to the second. That said, the second side does feature essentials like "Gut Feeling" and "Come Back Jonee". This might be heresy to some, but I've never been a fan of "Shrivel Up".

The first side, though, gives Fun House by the Stooges a run for its money in the six consective classic songs in a row stakes.

Amateur(ist), I GENUINELY dislike Joni Mitchell's warble. Regardless of the fact that she's a boring old hippy and whatnot, I just find her shrill dog whistle of a voice intensely unpleasant to have to listen to. I'm sure she's a very nice person, but keep that fuckin' microphone far away from her, please.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

The first side, though, gives Fun House by the Stooges a run for its money in the six consective classic songs in a row stakes.

that's quite a claim. i'm on my third listen of the Devo album. I want to check out the other ones, but--holy shit. it's albums like this that make me want to go, "Do you know how many crap records I had to listen to before I found you?!" We're still honeymooning, though, so we'll see... the vocals are unnervingly like David Byrne's sometimes, esp. circa TH:'77.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

But don't just take my word for it...

"Yeah, 'Whipit'! That's a funny song, dude!"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

Okay 2 days ago i spent $160 on cd's at a used place here in Dallas,Texas. Here's what i picked up & for how much.

$11.70
Twinemen/Orchestra Morphine-Live Cambridge,Ma 10/23/03
$12.60
The Kinks-The Ultimate Collection

I grab catalog stuff when it's been remastered or i have the unrelenting urge to make my own greatest hits album by a particular band.Otherwise i try to stick tp the relatively new.I would be scared to walk into Amoeba with my credit card.As it is online buys kill me.At the same time i bought this i got new stuff online from Eclipse,Crypt Records & Aquarius.
From Eclipse:
Brothers Of The Occult Sisterhood
Terracid-The Evacuation Of Earth
Corsican Paintbrush
Franciscan Hobbies-At The Worlds End
Uton-The August Light
Xenis Emputae Travelling Band-Toadsman's Bell
Matt Valentine-Rural ragas Vol.1

From Aquarius:

Magma-K.A.(New Album!!)
Jan Dukes De Grey-Mice And Rats in the Loft

So that's everything i have bought in the last week not to mention what i've downloaded off of live torrent sites & soulseek. Now granted money really not an issue but i'm afraid that catalog stuff just wouldn't cut it for me.So i guess i'm with Paulhw on this.Of your list all good tunes but i can honestly say i only wish to hear Devo & the Pavement again.Although nice 80 minute cd's of The Cars & The Pixies are fun.I always thought The Cocteau Twins were music you had to play in the car for your girlfriend so you'd get lucky at the end of the night.Oh & there is definitely a good Bauhaus mix amongst all their albums & singles.
In any case feel free to comment on my musical choices.I'm afraid here in Dallas i don't get much of a chance to share my music buying habits with others.

evan chronister (evan chronister), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

Apparently, Devo's New Traditionalists and Duty Now... have been re-issued. No extra stuff or nothin' (not that you'd need any in the wake of Pioneers Who Got Scalped and/or Recombo DNA, but still...something new would've been nice.

"Mongoloid, he was a mongo-LOID!"

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

I need to go curl up into a fetal ball and cry now.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:16 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

$100.90?

That's about £2, isn't it?

coco, Friday, 11 March 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I was just thinking, "$100? AMATEUR." Back in '96 I spent $150 per week on CDs. This is why I'm in debt now!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

i buy the occassional cd these days maybe once every 6 months...i used to be in dans boat.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

My friend told me about this mail-order company where you can get 10 CDs for the price of 1, with nothing more to buy...ever!

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

just tape a penney to the card.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

some good bargains. but i'm more interested in your use of the word "shite". do you americans say that now? or is it just in NYC?
i'm pleased like, it would indicate a successful scottish export.

you'll be saying "bawbags" next.

bg, Friday, 11 March 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

is that like ballbags?

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

yup, the scrotal sac. used as a general "harrumph" type indicator of disgruntlement/disagreement.

bg, Friday, 11 March 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

me in NYC, for this kind of catalog stuff, I go to Academy on 18th

And you'll pay the same price poortheater did at Tower for these disks, and they'll be used. Any decent title at Academy is definitely not $4.99, more like 7.99-8.99.

Keith C (kcraw916), Friday, 11 March 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

It's this kind of thread that makes me really want to live in America. You probably pay less in $s than we pay in £s.

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 11 March 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

We definitely do. I was in London last year and couldn't bring myself to buy anything at any of the stores I went to, even though they had a bunch of stuff I wanted that wasn't available in the US. After the conversion some CDs were like $25-$30.

If I lived in the UK I'd buy CDs from US retailers. You'll still save money even with the extra shipping costs. Try alldirect.com, not sure if they ship internationally, though.

Keith C (kcraw916), Friday, 11 March 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

My brother has that DEVO shirt.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

I just spent $200 at Amoeba and Aquarius in SF last week.
And that was forcing myself to buy "absolute must-haves."
That experimental section in Aquarius is sublime.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

bg, you can't claim "Shite" for Scotland! It belongs to all the Celts (except the French ones)... "Bawbags" is all yours though. We'll stick with "bollix".

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Are these sales chain-wide, or just at your local store?
-- Michael Copeland (fattymc...), March 11th, 2005. (later)

These sales are chainwide and available online, too.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)
