Inspired by the Berliners! thread. I'm making a trip to the Bay and am already planning on hitting Amoeba, Rasputin and Aquarius. What i'm really looking for is a good techno store. looking for acid, hard tek, electro-house, etc. also are there any small experimental stores? (Aquarius has alot, but not as much industrial/dark ambient stuff) thanks.

deru, Friday, 11 March 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Try Aquarius Records

oh shit. you mentioned Aquarius. nevermind. I guess I should start reading the goddamn posts, huh?

Actually I don't really shop at any other record stores, but there are plenty of techno/house shops on Lower Haight (Tweakin'?)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

try the internet

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Tweekin Records on Haight St for the techno stuff, maybe (is the Spundae store still down the street...?)
Open Mind on Divisadero is a great record store.

x-post

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 11 March 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

I think Spundae is gone. There is Zen City Records on Valencia too. If you are in the East Bay try Mod Lang (although not for techno.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Which San Franciscan is this addressed to, exactly?

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

POV:

Amoeba SF (good for almost everything except garage/grime, I guess)
Amoeba Berkeley (same, but it's smaller so the sections are tighter. . . still you can find deals)
Aquarius (just cuz they is nice folx)
Rasputin SF (good bargain bins and cutouts)
Open Mind (nice vinyl, listening stations)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I like the guys that sell mixtapes out of the back of their cars in West Oakland.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

addressed to the one with the good techno collection. thanks for the tips. at first i thought the Tweakin' reference was just to haight street, but now i see it's a store.
damn ILM is fast in the morning! thanks.

deru, Friday, 11 March 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

BPM is gone btw.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

There is supposed to be a good dancehall 7" store in the outer Mission but I've never been (and don't know the name.) Anyone know it?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Actually CD Record Rack is gone too, I think.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

spundae is indeed gone. really, good techno shit is hard to come by in SF. aquarius, as good as it is for CDs, is crap for vinyl. tweekin's ok, but definitely not essential. and yeah, open mind music is pretty good for techno stuff. (a couple blocks from haight st.). really, amoeba's kinda yr best bet cuz at least there's a bit of turnover there. i imagine if phil sherburne's apartment were a store, that it'd be the city's best...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

yeah, Wisdom is great for dancehall/reggae shit. in the excelsior on Mission (near Silver)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

I looked for 0=0 "Soul Hunter Testifies" at Amoeba earlier in the week and they didn't have it so I am mad right now.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Ken you are saint!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Oh oh I was on Silver the other night. I was lost.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

BPM is gone? i thought it just moved from Polk to Hayes?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

This looks great. I am going after work now. Adam you wanna come?

http://www.wisdomrecordssf.com/

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah BPM closed about a month and a half ago. Now it's just another Hayes Valley boutique.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

I would love to come but I have to be in Piedmont for a "dinner party"!

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I like reggae.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

that is sad Alex!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

wow that place looks pretty great!! "positive livity" = star righteous, I & I been in Babylon too long...

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 11 March 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

My favorite Hayes Valley boutique has to be "Shoppe Unusual".

I've never been inside, the name just makes me laugh.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Haha I've never been it either, but just looking from the outside it looks amusing.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I miss Powell's...

Adam, what is your perspective on Kosher Delis?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

I took Adam to East Coast West deli.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

I like Kosher Delis.

Actually, I don't care if they are kosher.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I like Hayes Valley!

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

oh, just a note re: Wisdom. the door will prolly be locked. you gotta buzz up and they'll let you in. i almost walked away thinking it was closed on my first trip to the place.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Powells was good, but I think it may reopen somewhere else. Apparently though a CHICAGO STYLE PIZZA joint is replacing it!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

"oh, just a note re: Wisdom. the door will prolly be locked. you gotta buzz up and they'll let you in. i almost walked away thinking it was closed on my first trip to the place."

That's good to know. Thanks again Ken!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

speaking of Hayes Valley, has anybody seen this little store at Page and (i think) SCott streets? it looks like it's just called 'Records' and never seems to be open when i'm up that way...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

i'm pretty sure BPM is still around, just not on Hayes anymore.

one time gaffled 'em up, Friday, 11 March 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

wait Powell's, the soul food place in Hayes Valley is gone??? SUXX0R!

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 11 March 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Frequency-8 1816 Haight St. near Stanyan (tel: 415.221.4142 fax 415.221.4143 email: illumin8@frequency-8.com)

* trance and techno/mostly vinyl and CDs
* 2 turntables for customers
* small size, full stock

By far San Francisco's most incredible looking record shop - the ceiling is covered with flashing electronic gear. Great selection of trance and techno plus some clothing and mix tapes.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

"speaking of Hayes Valley, has anybody seen this little store at Page and (i think) SCott streets? it looks like it's just called 'Records' and never seems to be open when i'm up that way..."

Jack's Record Seller. Yeah it's all vinyl. It's good. The owner is the older brother of the Flaming Groovies' drummer (who was the owner of the restaurant my gf works at.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

there's a good deli called moishe's pippic on hayes but it's only open like 10am-3pm. i have been on a date (WITH SOMEONE ON A KOSHER DIET!!!!) to a kosher restaurant in Chinatown probably not far from that place you used to stay at!!!

What is the Jewish Perspective on Chinatown Kosher dining?

Ken, that's Jack's Record Cellar (owned and operated by of the Roy Loney, the singer of the Flamin' Groovies)and it's not in Hayes Valley, that's straight up Lower Haight (ie, around the corner from my house duder!)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

"i'm pretty sure BPM is still around, just not on Hayes anymore."

Yeah, it wouldn't shock me if they moved to a place with lower overhead (that part of Hayes is tres price-y I am sure.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

I eat at Moishe's Pippic all the time. It's good. Expensive, but good.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

It's Chicago style Jewish deli though. East Coast West is better btw.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

that part of hayes is tres suck-y

one time gaffled 'em up, Friday, 11 March 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

gygax, I know who that date was.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Eh most of the boutiques are pretty lame, but I like Suppenkuche and Into Video and that bar right there (even though I never go cuz of the smoke) and Fritz. I wish there was a cheaper grocery store there, frankly.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Ken, that's Jack's Record Cellar (owned and operated by of the Roy Loney, the singer of the Flamin' Groovies)and it's not in Hayes Valley, that's straight up Lower Haight (ie, around the corner from my house duder!)
-- gygax! (gygax0...), March 11th, 2005.

dude, check yr voting district. you're hayes valley all the way!

;)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Haha well I always thought it was Lower Haight too, so what do I know.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

I noticed that gygax switches between saying he lives in Hayes Valley and Lower Haight a lot.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Powell's move somewhere in the Fillmore Center?

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

god, i can't keep up with this thread.

i'm pretty sure BPM is still around, just not on Hayes anymore.

the girls in the boutique told me it moved to lower haight. i haven't seen it yet.

wait Powell's, the soul food place in Hayes Valley is gone??? SUXX0R!

heard it moved to the Filmore District. makes sense.

"speaking of Hayes Valley, has anybody seen this little store at Page and (i think) SCott streets? it looks like it's just called 'Records' and never seems to be open when i'm up that way..."

Jack's Record Seller. Yeah it's all vinyl. It's good. The owner is the older brother of the Flaming Groovies' drummer (who was the owner of the restaurant my gf works at.)

i hate that place. i went in once, they didn't even acknowledge my existence. i looked around, realized the only jazz they had was by white people and walked out.

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

i live in a nether region between alamo square/western addition/lower haight. hayes valley, i do not claim.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

the lines between upper and lower haight and hayes valley and western additions, admittedly, are really hard to discern. i think i live in the mission

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

the girls in the boutique?

xp

my neighborhood demonstrated against having a starbucks put in...

AND WE WON!

no starbucks in hayes valley!

read about it here

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

btw, gygax, i like your area quite a bit. thinking about moving there in the coming months...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if I've ever eaten this "soul food". Would I like it?

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, and where, technically, is the Fillmore (district)?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

and why doesn't the MUNI map even mention upper/lower haight? they call it haight ashbury and haight fillmore still

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I like that area too. Maybe I'll move there. Is it sunny?

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

If not, where is?

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

i lived in hayes valley in 2003 you douche!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

woah there, dean gulberry.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

who's the douche?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

wish I knew

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

It now looks like I'm not going to M.I.A./diplo. Sold out.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

http://www.idiom.com/~cxarli/image/lhaight.gif

here is the lower haight. i live about 2.5 blocks from the epicenter which is technically NOT lower haight, weird? yes.

upper haight is divided by divisadero/bv park.

the fillmore is south of japan town and north of hayes valley, east of polk gulch and west of western addition.

"I like douching!"

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh, so I'm not going to MIA either.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

What are these 'Loren Miller Homes' and what are they doing in my intersection?

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I only just realized that Duboce ISN'T pronounced "doo-boh-chay"!

ahahahahaha!

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I still can't say "Kearny" properly either.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Kurny

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

nice work, gygax. did you research these coordinates or do you just know 'em? (serious question, as i'm quite impressed)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

ooh, i dunno... if you ask old school (i mean real old ppl from here) they say it's 'keerny'

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

isn't that how everyone says it?

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

that's how i say it, but i hear kurny quite a bit too. what does the voice on MUNI say?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I don't know...I never ride MUNI.

Milo Smiley (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

i try to but i can usually walk to my destinations faster. well, sometimes...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

'Kurny' says the Muni voice

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

It's pronounced like the Simpson's character.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

I like the Simpson's where they escape from Alcatraz and start swimming towards SF and then Homer goes "You think I'm made of money? EVERYBODY HEAD FOR OAKLAND!". Funny.
