I love jazz singing

The uhmm... light jazz station they play at work from time to time dulls my brain; but occasionally they play a singer like Rosemary Clooney and it's dawned on me how much I like it. They never over sing, it sounds very cool, and from time to time they have a really sly sense of humor. They can manage to be ironic and heartfelt about a lyric simultaniously.

I know it varies from artist to artist; but as a genre or subgenre or whatever, I've totally missed this.

Besides all of which, it seems like this takes some extreme talent. Most of the time they're just singing over bass and drums with some bits of sax and piano here and there, making up their own melody as they go.

Jazz singing is ridiculously outstanding to listen to and ridiculously difficult to do well.

Amen. Few can do it. The ones who pretend they can do it are laughable to listen to when you've listened to the masters.

Sarah Vaughn doing "Lush Life" is the greatest thing ever.

I think I meant to add Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Jerome Kern Songbook on the other thread when I duplicated the Duke Ellingon Songbook.

My favorite of that Ella Songbook series is the Cole Porter, but that's mostly cause his are my favorite standards.
