I dropped 12 bucks on the double disc edition of Sonic Youth's Dirty, which was well worth it. I'm wondering what other similar special editions are worth picking up.

I'd say The Complete Fun House Sessions by the Stooges, but I don't really think anyone should own this (though I do).

the 'slanted and enchanted' reissue is pretty essential.

I bought the double-disc version of the Allman Brothers' At Fillmore East and play it more often than I thought I would. (I have yet to make it to the end of "Mountain Jam," though.) And the double disc of A Love Supreme is great if you don't already have the live version on some other bootleg (I had it in a 3-CD box from Charly). The demo versions also on the second disc aren't all that revelatory, but the live set is scorching.

Crooked Rain Crooked Rain reissue is equally great. The studio album itself isn't as good as Slanted, but the bonus stuff more than makes up for it.

Verve Master Edition: Chick Corea and Return to Forever - Light as a Feather.

the fall's live at the witch trials (2 disc) is pretty good.

reissued live at the apollo v. 2 by james brown is way expanded and excellent

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 13 March 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

The live album appended to Rick James's "Street Songs" is surprisingly hot. I'm not so big on the expanded "Apollo II," but the uncut take of "Escape-Ism" at the end of the "Hot Pants" reissue is fabulous.

Also the kazillion bonus tracks on Elvis Costello's "Get Happy!!" are AWESOME. And the 11 demo covers for George Jones appended to Costello's "Kojak Variety" reissue completely kick the original album's ass, esp. a spectacular uptempo country version of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go."

And Coltrane's complete "Live at the Village Vanguard" box is unbelievably good too.

Pretty Things' S.F. Sorrow (Snapper Music) w/ 4 great bonus trax.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Sunday, 13 March 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

Costello -- I also dug the live bonus stuff on 'Almost Blue.' Wish there were more.

The bonus disc of 'Let's Get It On' is also great.

I wrote the Stooges set mentioned above to a single MP3 disc. Just got through the entire set(i.e. played) in the car, just to check it. That's four total and complete playthroughs now.

Anyhow, expanded versions? The Who Sell Out.

First Throwing Muses album, lovingly compiled in In a Doghouse with the amazing Chains Changed EP, the entire "Doghouse" cassette, and new recordings of old songs...and the video for "Fish"!

Miles Davis: The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions is fabulous, and the Jack Johnson box is great as well. (I'd skip the Bitches Brew box, though, and stick with the normal release.)

(I have yet to make it to the end of "Mountain Jam," though.)

Wait, so it's longer than the album version?

No, but 35 minutes is too much for me.

In a Doghouse seconded to the umpteenth power, if that's mathematically possible.

LONDON CALLING

Really? I was pretty excited when I heard about it but sold it after one listen. The album itself is the same as the other reissued version, the demo stuff is nearly unlistenable, and the DVD material can be had (along with a bunch of other footage) on a separate $10 DVD. What's the point?

I only recently found out about the 2-disc Costello reissues. Are they really worthwhile? Should I sell all of my Ryko versions to buy those or not bother?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 14 March 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

The OMD reissues sound great, have lots of bonus tracks and are very reasonably priced. And no obnoxious oversized digipaks. Sadly, they didn't reissue Dazzle Ships!
