i know that the sample is from gary numan (are friends ...) but what is the chorus/hook ripped off from ?

somebody must know!!

― piscesboy, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sugababes?!?? gary numan?!??

this sounds like my dream record.

even without the red haired one!

― david, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

who did they end up drafting in. was it an atomic kitten reject?

― Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a remix by Girls On Top I think, and I believe the original track was by Adina Howard (? - might have been another diva type). Original was called "Freak Like Me".

― Tom, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Freak Like Me" is indeed by Adina Howard, and is a GREAT and IMPORTANT piece of art. I'm anxious to hear the Girls On Top remix.

― Tim, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh. so it isnt sugababes??

the girls on top thing is bosstin.

i like the idea of sugababes doing gary numan.

does it for me anyway

― david, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is Sugababes - they did a cover of Freak Like Me for the new single, it's been remixed in some 'unofficial' sense and then the 'unnofficial' bootleg w/Numan is now getting the 'proper' release - this is as I understand it, anyway.

― Tom, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had her album sent to me free way the hell back when but got rid of it. Can't remember the damn song to save my life.

― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

er, so sugababes have basically ripped off the girls on top thing by covering the adina howard track and sticking are friends electric underneath it? or am i just getting this completely wrong.

― david, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, I have the wretched chorus of said song (TILL THE EARLY MO-O-O-O- O-ORN) stuck in my silly little head. I am quite jealous.

Would Mr. Finney care to enlighten the skeptical members of our viewing audience with a more succinct justification for canonizing Ms. Howard's freaky booty call?

― David Raposa, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If this Girls on Top-copying business isn't enough, wasn't a cover of "Freak Like Me" already a two-step hit in the UK? By Tru Faith and the Dub something-or-other? I know I have it on a MoS or Ayia Napa cd. (and it's pretty damn good, too.)

― scott p., Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The 2-step version predates the Girls On Top version I imagine, and is the primary evidence for the song's brilliance - one of the best songs for dancing EVER. That Adina's original version pales in comparison only suggests that music itself hadn't advanced far enough to realise her genius.

― Tim, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yeah: it's by Tru Faith & Dub Conspiracy.

― Tim, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

TILL THE EARLY MO-O-O-O- O-ORN

Sounds more like something Livingston Taylor would sing.

― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
Check out www.geocities.com/sugababesinformationworld for more info, the song is released on 29th April,

two weeks pass...
can I be hugely anal and point out that the Adina Howard song is an adaptation of I'd rather be with you by Bootsy Collins...

this single's the most unbearable piece of girly shit I've heard in [well I would normally say years but these days it's] months.

The Adina track isn't a classic, but it flows, and it's of a time when horrible 14 year old Nokia addicts weren't up to musical consciousness, so cool by default.

Music for little girls to buy jeans in Miss Selfridge to. Shit generation.

"girly"

― mark s, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

are misogynists electric?

we’ve come a long way baby

― maura, Friday, 18 October 2019 02:19 (seven years ago)

aw it's off the new DJ Spoony Garage Classical comp - basically garage covers with orchestral arrangements.

Lily Allen covering "Sweet Like Chocolate" and Paloma Faith covering "Moving Too Fast" too, among others: https://open.spotify.com/album/0ffDkx9XNvg59sxuWbUNYq?si=yOcJhCLDRV6uzMK-iYICKQ

― Roz, Friday, 18 October 2019 10:00 (seven years ago)

i saw the advert for this the other night and, well, it's not for me

― Xia Nu del Vague (Noodle Vague), Friday, 18 October 2019 10:00 (seven years ago)

"Flowers" doesn't sound *too* orchestra-y tho

― Xia Nu del Vague (Noodle Vague), Friday, 18 October 2019 10:02 (seven years ago)

xp me neither tbh but if it gets people on to the originals then more power to it. none of them are too orchestral-ish to be fair, they're more like orchestral ~flourishes~

― Roz, Friday, 18 October 2019 10:04 (seven years ago)

yeah i'm just kind of baffled why orchestral versions of stuff has become this minor thing

― Xia Nu del Vague (Noodle Vague), Friday, 18 October 2019 10:06 (seven years ago)

new twist on touring

― maura, Friday, 18 October 2019 12:39 (seven years ago)

these orchestral versions of dance music things always feel like an attempt to force some kind of perceived and unnecessary ~legitimacy~ on to music that doesn't need it

this is nice enough and their voices are always a pleasure to hear but I would never ever want to hear this over the original under any circumstance

― boxedjoy, Saturday, 19 October 2019 09:42 (seven years ago)

In theory I like the idea of playing dance music with physical instruments, but you have to use it to add something, not to make it sound more glossy and, yes, "prestigious" - the grime prom a couple of years back actually worked, as (I think, you may disagree) does this

― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 19 October 2019 09:53 (seven years ago)

Flowers is the only halfway decent one. Sincere, Movin’ Too Fast & Sweet Like Chocolate are all appalling.

― gyac, Saturday, 19 October 2019 10:01 (seven years ago)

anything with Paloma Faith is appalling

― boxedjoy, Saturday, 19 October 2019 10:06 (seven years ago)

What about that MKS album that was supposed to come out years ago?

It's ancient but Jeremy Deller's Acid Brass had the right tone - it was ludicrous, but it was done with gusto. Here's a live version of "Voodoo Ray", that works because the original track has enough musical material to build an orchestration around:
