So, bands that didn't do so well commercially on their follow-up? Even if they made a quantum leap in quality? (Not implying that Sum 41 or Alien Ant Farm did, of course! Yeesh...) And no bands who lost their creative focus on their subsequent release?

Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac. Failing that, Ian Riese-Moraine. (Eastern Man, Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

the Papa Roach album pictured above is their 3rd album, but really it was their 2nd that was the follow-up that tanked:

did a remarkable amount of these fail due to the fact that the artwork was trying to make the artist *look hard*?
i mean seriously who was mc hammer trying to kid up there?!

by the way there's nothing that 'fails' even remotely about
NEW ADVENTURES IN HI-FI as just about every review of the recent
re-releases confirms. albeit 10 years too late.

piscesboy, Monday, 14 March 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

"New Adventures In Hi-Fi" is overrated. However, I don't see how "Monster", R.E.M's worst ever album, was a hard act to follow. This cover, however, fits perfectly into this thread:

That Propaganda album was dire. It made me cry.

I don't see how Monster was a failure...wasn't it quadruple platinum?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 14 March 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

"Monster" clearly failed compared to "Automatic For The People"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 14 March 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Btw, with an album cover like that, no wonder "Bury The Hatchet" failed....

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 14 March 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to have a quadruple-platinum "failure", myself..that's why the music industry is so fucked up these days, considering selling 4 million copies of something to be a failure. (I also thought Monster was the band's best album since Life's Rich Pageant, but you know me...I'm a contrarian about these things sometimes.)

Burrito Deluxe is really good.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah - and so is Monster.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Being "good" isn't the issue here, though. It's about whether or not the albums in question matched the success of their immediate predecessors.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Monster's "failure" is debatable. i think it sold a lot, and it has like 4 or 5 hits on radio/MTV, probably did as well as Automatic commercially...it's just that people didn't like it, so it ended up becoming one of the biggest used bin fillers of all time. really it was New Adventures that tanked in sales terms, although it was pretty good and more or less suffering for the sins of its predecessor (although it didn't have any strong singles either).

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Sheer momentum from Automatic For the People resulted in healthy sales for Monster, but fairweathers didn't like it resulting in the superior New Adventures copping for it.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

another relative 'failure':

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Burrito Deluxe is really good.

I'd say it's the only album Gram Parsons ever released that wasn't really great.

However, this thread is about commercial success rather than artistic success, which I guess the recent post of "Paul's Boutique" (often considered their best moment artistically) is a brilliant example of.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

If it's about commercial success, then why'd ya put Kid A on there?

Quit glaring at Ian Riese-Moraine! He's mentally fraught! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

"Kid A" did sell considerably less than "OK Computer" did.
