I know, I know, this was so long ago, but I've been busy and didn't want to forget about this.
Seeing as to how I wasn't too sure as to what I wanted for my birthday and I hearing about the Furs coming to SF a week before the show, I decided this would be the perfect present. About two months earlier (I believe) I had gotten into the Furs and was becoming obssesed. I had fallen in love with Richard Butler's voice (which I absolutely hated before) and lyrics, Tim Butler's beautiful, but simple bass lines, and just about everything that I knew was the Furs'. The only thing I didn't really like was probably "She is Mine".
I heard about the show and got really nervous before asking my mom about posibly going. It was a good thing I told her. She thought the show was a later date and a day she wouldn't be able to take me. Her days off are Thursday and Friday, so Wednesday night was perfect. I almost lost my chance to go when we got in a huge fight, but I redemed myself and I was exstatic all through out Wednesday.
When I told my grandma about it she wanted me to wear a pink shirt. I thought about it, but changed my mind at the last minute. I wore a button up white shirt with a collar and black pants (the same black pants I wore to see the Joke). It was a good thing I changed my mind (I guess). I was dressed exactly like Richard Butler, except without the suspenders and sunglasses. I don't remember the set list exactly, but I know they played 17 songs: 14 in the set and 3 in the encore. I couldn't see the whole set list because John Ashton's pedal board was in the way. It went something like this:
Into You Like a Train
Mr. Jones
Love My Way
President Gas
You and I
Sister Europe
Alice's House
Dumb Waiters
The Ghost in You
Heartbreak Beat
Highwire Days
Heaven
-------------------------
Wrong Train
Pretty in Pink
Sleep Comes Down
I know there are two songs missing but I can't for the life of me figure out what they are.
The show was great. I mean really great. It felt like the shortest show I've ever seen even though I know it wasn't. It just went by so fast. Maybe it was Richard's dancing.
During "Sister Europe" Richard put his hands right below his waist and brought them up to his chest. Some woman behind me started screaming. I just laughed. Tim Butler was the first to realize a young girl was in the audience. He smiled at me each time he was on "my side". That actually made me kind of mad at my mom. She insisted that I move from my original spot right infront of the stage where Tim was going to be to the spot where John ended up. Well, John's cool too. He gave a pick to the guy standing right next to me.
The line up was Richard Butler, Tim Butler, John Ashton, some male drummer, and a female keyboard player. I just have to say that a keyboard can not compare to an actually saxophone, but the show was great anyway.
