I don't currently have a copy of Ball-Hog but thanks to this thread I am totally going to listen to NO CODE today

-- Al (hoteloper...), March 13th, 2005.

I just found my sister's old copy of No Code in a bag in my room today, coincidentally. I've never listened to it before but probably know a bunch of songs from the alt-rock station. I know they played a ton. I'd put it on if I wasn't at work.

-- miccio (anthonyisrigh...), March 13th, 2005.

dude I don't wanna hijack the thread, don't get me started on No Code!!!

-- Al (hoteloper...), March 13th, 2005.

Al, get started! No Code as good thing, or No Code as bad thing?

-- David R. (quoteidio...), March 13th, 2005.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

good thing!!!!!

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm listening to "In My Tree" right now, it's my favorite song.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

main reason it's my favorite Pearl Jam album: Jack Irons (he's on Yield too, but didn't get away with as much polyrhythmic wankery on that one).

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

also: the mid-album block of their most blatant Neil Young homages to date: "Smile"/"Off He Goes"/"Red Mosquito" ("Habit" is also in the middle of that but doesn't really fit in with the NY thing)

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I think "Smile" used to be my least favorite song because it sounded really kind of mean and sarcastic at the beginning when he says "don't it make you smile" but now I'm pretty sure it's a sincere/happy song and I like it better.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

"Mankind" is the reason I once almost considered buying the Stone Gossard solo album.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

"Present Tense" was at one point my favorite song because I'm a sucker for songs that start off slow and drumless and then end with a big rave-up, but it doesn't hit me as hard anymore. also it wasn't nearly as good when I saw them play it live w/ Matt Cameron (who's a great drummer yeah but doesn't really have any reverence for playing the old songs as they're played on the records by the other drummers, especially the Jack Irons stuff).

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

do they still sell the cardboard version of the album packaging with the little sleeves that have a bunch of fake Polaroid-cards with the lyrics for each song in them? each copy came with 9 random cards (of the total 13 songs/cards).

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

token incredibly embarrassing cringe-inducing Vedder moment of this album: "I'm Open". spoken word over Eno soundscapes!

A man lies in his bed in a room with no door
He waits hoping for a presence something anything to enter
After spending half his life searching he still felt as blank
As the ceiling at which he stared
He is alive but feels absolutely nothing
So is he?
When he was six he believed that the moon overhead followed him
By nine he had deciphered the illusion trading magic for fact
No tradebacks...
So this is what it's like to be an adult
If he only knew now what he knew then...
I'm open... (2x)
Come on in... (4x)
I'm open... (2x)
Come on in... (4x)
I'm open...
Lying sideways atop crumpled sheets and no covers he decides to
dream...
Dream up a new self for himself...

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

token incredibly embarrassing cringe-inducing Vedder moment of this album

"token" and "moment"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

alternate candidate for best song: "Lukin", which is short and heavy and angry-sounding and is about Vedder hanging out at Matt Lukin's place hiding from a stalker.

Drive down the street can't find the keys to my own fucking home
I take a walk so I can curse my ass for being dumb
I make a right after the arches. . . stinking grease and bone
Stop at the supermarket. . . people stare like I'm a dog

I'm gone to Lukin's... I gotta spot at Lukin's
Unlock the door at Lukin's. . . open the fridge
Now I know life's worth

I find the key but I return to find an open door
Some fucking freak who claims I fathered by raping my son
I find my wife. I call the cops. This day's work's never done.
The last I heard the freak was purchasing a fucking gun.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

"open the fridge, now I know life's worth" is to me one of the greatest lyrics of all time

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

Eisbar, I know!! this is Vedder we're talking about! but even if you like his schtick (which I do) there's always that one moment on every PJ album where it's unbearable

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

Miccio : Durst :: Me :: Vedder

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

someone get me a book deal, I think I can write one of those 33 1/3 things about this album.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

oh and for the record, "Lukin" = 62 seconds long

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

I like this album for the same reason I like the last Blink 182 album; overambitious showboat drummer gets let loose to wank all over what might have been much less interesting (to me) otherwise.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Well now I DEFINITELY have to play this tomorrow.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

and I can definitely see the Durst/Vedder logic. Both reached their apex on their band's third album ("Bugs" = Ben Stiller)

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

haha ok come back to the thread and share your reactions! the album's almost over so I'm running out of things to say. (xp)

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

ok now I have to take the Durst/Vedder parallel to its extreme and turn this into a PICTURE THREAD

Vedder entry in Wikipedia

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

WEIRD AL YANKOVIC LYRICS
"My Baby's In Love With Eddie Vedder"

Oh, my baby, my baby she don't want me no more
Ever since she saw his poster in that record store
She says the way he grinds his molars is really sexy
She thinks he's so darn dysfunctional and "Generation X"y
She likes his brooding angst and his wild-eyed stare
Yeah, he's her very favorite slacker multi-millionaire

Well, my baby's in love with Eddie Vedder
She's all crazy 'bout that Eddie Vedder
Once she was mine, but now I better just forget her
'Cause my baby's in love with Eddie Vedder

Now, every time I see him, well, he looks so grim
I guess it really must suck to be a rock star like him
What a pain in the butt to have so much success
Spending all his time moping and avoiding the press
But my girl can't get enough of his sullen demeanor
Like he's some big tortured genious and I'm some kinda wiener

Well, my baby's in love with Eddie Vedder
She's got a thing for that Eddie Vedder
Tell me, what can he do that I can't do better
Now my baby's in love with
I said I said I said my baby's in love with Eddie Vedder
Head over heels for that Eddie Vedder
I cant believe it, now she's knitting him a sweater
'Cause my baby's in love with Eddie Vedder

I knew we were headin' for disaster
When she caught me hangin' out at the Ticketmaster
Now she's got an unrequited adoratioon
For the frustrated, agitated, designated alienated
Spokesman for the disaffected grunge generation

Well, I don't wear Doc MArtens and I don't wear flannel
And I don't boycott the music video channel
And I just can't compete with all that money and fame
But I know two can play at this game
Yeah, well, let's just see how jealous she'll get
When I start stalking Alanis Morissette

Well, my baby's in love with Eddie Vedder
She's all crazy 'bout that Eddie Vedder
Once she was mine but now I better just forget her
'Cause my baby's in love with
I said I said I said my baby's in love with Eddie Vedder
Why'd she have to fall for that Eddie Vedder
If she wants to leave me, I guess I better let her
'Cause my baby's in love with Eddie Vedder

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

I loved this album as a twelve year old. I don't listen to it much anymore (last time was probably a few years ago), but I doubt I'll ever sell it.

f--gg (gcannon), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

haha I was just spending the last 15 minutes cataloguing maps and thinking about all the crazy hair-styles vedder has had! eerie.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

I wish I could find more Vedder mohawk pictures besides ones from the RnR Hall of Fame induction of the Ramones. I remember one time seeing a great picture of him with the mohawk playing a ukelele.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

wasn't he supposed to keep the mohawk till there was peace, Johnny "Man In Black" Cash style?

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

pearl jam's second best album!

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

albums I'd consider No Code being maybe 2nd to: Vitalogy, and um...maybe Yield...maybe Vs.

I almost posted the lyrics to that before I found the Yankovic lyrics.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

except maybe "Jeremy." I'll know the the lyrics to that one when I'm 80. How could I forget...

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

THE SERPENT WAS SUBTLE

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh, to revisit the "hey, they're ripping off Zeppelin! literally!" days when "Given To Fly" first hit (and then, in my region, missed) radio.

I guess hardcore fans cannot get w/ Eddie's Camaro metaphor.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

"All Those Yesterdays" is it re: getting my PJ ballad fix, tho. (Go Stone!)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

'given to fly' was the biggest hit down here, and even then seemed to drop off considerably once yield actually hit and radio figured 'fuck - it ain't happening'. i heard 'wishlist' and 'do the evolution' a couple of times but not nearly as much as 'given to fly' and none of these anywhere remotely near as much as 'sour girl'.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I remember hating 'Given To Fly' when it came out. It pissed me off so much. In fact, I actually fell off the PJ wagon because of Yield ... which stands as a black mark on my name, apparently. My husband still rags on me about my not going to see them play in Melbourne in 1998, and I lived right down the street from the Rod Laver Arena at the time. All because of Yield. So because it took awhile to come around, I tend to forget about it when I'm talking about the PJ 'canon'. I eventually admitted I was a dumbass and professed my love for Given To Fly, wishlist, etc. So that's my story.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

All Those Yesterdays -- OTM. That was a gem of a discovery once I did get right with Yield. Stone always seems to capture the good things about pop music.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha - Blount, I kinda wish the stations up herre pushed "Sour Girl" 1/10th as much as they tried to push "Down". "No, really, rock is back! Listen! They mean it! Grrrr! Weiland is HARD!" No wonder most of the rawk stations in CT gave up the alt.ghost for the shock of the nu and/or retrenched as bastions of all things 70s and mullety.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Or just switched format to pimp out mostly-syndicated hip-hop shows (like Star & Buckwild / the Wendy Williams X-Foliant).

They actually did release a video for "Do The Evolution" didn't they? All animation, done by Todd McFarlane. And Korn used McFarlane for one of their videos too!

Lingbertt, Monday, 14 March 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

yeah miccio that 'jeremy' topten listing is a soundscan blip, they released (rereleased?) their 'ten' singles mid-nineties, pj fans (which were legion at the time) gotta gotta have whatever that b-side is (a dime sez it's "yellow ledbetter")
Funny that everyone talks about ledbetter, it was popular then- but the original jeremy single also featured a song called 'footsteps' that I still think ranks as one of the best PJ songs. The same music was used on a Temple of the Dog song, I forget which one....
(xpost)

mclaugh (mclaugh), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Times Of Trouble is the Temple of the Dog track you're thinking of.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Really? Dissident was a single here? I guess it wasn't in Australia then. Or I just missed it completely. What were the b-sideS? The b-sides for the first 2 albums were defintely way cool...Dirty Frank on Evenflow had to be the best. Also stuff like Wash, and Footsteps, and yeah, Yellow Ledbetter definitely helped Jeremy.

-- VegemiteGrrl (sharonjo...), March 14th, 2005.

I think the b-sides were mostly live but there was also a Vs. outtake version of "Alone" (the version on Lost Dogs is a Ten outtake).

and yeah there was a video for "Do The Evolutioin", which was a sorta-big deal at the time (only got on TRL briefly, though), broke the 6-year no-video streak.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

you guys who like the twangy acoustic stuff must love the "Down" disc of the Rearviewmirror comp, huh? I always got annoyed when they'd release songs like "Off He Goes" and "Nothing As It Seems" as singles, although some of that stuff is my favorite songs too.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

The hits defintely stopped coming after Vitalogy.

Didn't "Last Kiss" go to #1?

billstevejim, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

"Last Kiss" was kind of a fluke. I mean it was a hit, but basically what happened was it was on their Xmas single one year, then some DJs picked up on it, and they decided to release it as a retail single and donate the proceeds to charity, and it shot right up the charts because of that. so I could be wrong, but I think it might have just gone to #1 on the single sales chart, like those Bright Eyes singles.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

"Last Kiss" is easily my least favorite PJ song (that I've heard). At least "Glorified G" and "W.M.A." are funny.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm kind of surprised to know that Betterman was their biggest hit (mainstream rock chart), considering it wasn't even a single. I always thought that Last Kiss was their biggest hit.

buck van smack (Buck Van Smack), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

"last kiss" crossed over to ac - pj's biggest hit. crossing over to ac = the story of rock for almost ten years now.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

i don't care what anyone says, 'who you are' is godawful. you'd think they'd never picked up a guitar before, and that's probably the point - this band loves to play the self-indulgent card.

also even though I'm obviously a big advocate for post-megastardom Pearl Jam, I have to say that Riot Act and especially the self-titled album are pretty awful records.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

'in hiding' is a good pj song as far as the more (relatively) recent stuff goes.

the ballads haven't been good since vitalogy

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

The last PJ album is actually really good, despite its terrible cover art.

No one was as shocked as I was. But it shouldn't have been, as they've improved with each album.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

I love the first track on No Code, but it's all ruined by the second one which comes in with all the welcomness of an irritating alarm clock.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

Ha - I actually prefer the cover art to the actual album (which has decent enough songs, but Eddie and/or the production just fucks 'em all up).

yeah his vocal performances on that album are easily the worst of his career. beyond a couple decent singles I don't understand any of the love for s/t.

David R., Tuesday, 24 July 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

I saw a Brad music video on 120 Minutes once. It was a gentle AC piano ballad with Shawn Smith asking you to think what makes you laugh and think what makes you sing. Stone was putting some sparse wacka-chicka on it.
