I love Sasha.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

CH CHING!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

"m.c.s"? is that in the style guide?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

it is now!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Let me point out that the Sov line about J-Lo is misquoted, before anyone else uses it as a stick to beat SFJ with. Still dig the article, although I'm not at all sure about the implication that grime is *less* dancey than hip hop...

Flyboy (Flyboy), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Define dancey.

I have only once had the chance to dance to grime in a club. It was good.

just adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

haha - The purists are not entirely wrong. When a new sound sprouts on pop’s tree, invisible to passersby, it is a wondrous thing. But what happens next is often more interesting: the music begins to find an audience, record companies offer to pay musicians to make their sounds, and someone gives those sounds a name. The music is now a genre, and it grows willy-nilly, borrowing from other genres, which it may eventually resemble, while announcing itself as something you’ve never heard before.

Electronica and crunk passed through this stage not long ago, and grime, a British genre, has now entered it. - how many dissensus brownshirts will scream "NOOOOOO!!!!!" at this part?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

trouble in jonestown this morning

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

congrats to S/FJ! the piece is great!

i have never seen "ping-pong" capitalized like that -- the New Yorker style guide is even stricter than i thought!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Haha I had a conversation with my cousin about ringtones because of the New Yorker last week, I wonder if next we will be talking about the merits of "POW".

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

I like this non-answer about whether grime is going to be big in the US.

When the song was over, Sovereign asked me if I thought grime would take off in America. Five months later, the answer is increasingly clear. “Pow,” a song by an m.c. called Lethal B, and grime’s biggest hit to date, has made its way to New York, where it is currently being played on Hot 97 by the influential d.j. Funkmaster Flex.

So that's a maybe?

Gregory T (tubesocks), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

POW simply don't do much for me. Lady SOV on the other hand... I'm just waiting for that first duet with a major american rapper.
Bets on who? Em would be an obvious...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh I love songs where its like an endless stream of MCs all trying to top one another at breakneck speed.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

em is way too much of a rap snob to link with lady sov. someone like missy and timbo or xzibit would probably be into it.

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

why did he keep writing mcs like m.c.s? i kept thinking he was on about some rapper called MC S!

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

SF-J sez on his site that there is picture in the print version. Can anyone scan and post it here?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

she's not that fit.

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

I didn't get the impression it was a picture of Lady Sovereign (who I've seen a zillion pics of and you are right.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

WONDER/SLIM THUG

just adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

i thought this article was just ok. it got a little "see jack run" in the middle, and the thing i love most about sf/j is his ability to write to a wider audience without necessarily falling back on that style.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

New Yorker fact-checking caught out?

Surely Dee, not Kano, is second MC on Destruction. Unless something changed for official release.

just saying, Monday, 14 March 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

More grime being heard here = :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

LETHAL B/NED RAGGETT

just adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Yay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Kelefa's on the grime beat today too. March 14 -- the day grime broke. (Overlook the awful NYT head, plz.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

(or, the day grime broke to affluent college-educated liberals...which Damon Dash could tell you is a key demo, I'm sure)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I think Lady Sov would sound way better than Eve does on the new Gwen Stefani single.

Also DEMON/JUVIE would sound killer.

adam (adam), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

It's a Grime Wave! (grime's pun potential is like Thai restaurant names!)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

The Kelefa thing coulda been called "Grime Time Live."

adam (adam), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah with so many puns to choose FROM why pick that AWFUL title!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

haha holy shit that hed is awful

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

What does that hed even MEAN?

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Monday, 14 March 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

It's much worse than the also TERRIBLE Rich Harrison header.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

When the song was over, Sovereign asked me if I thought grime would take off in America. I actually dislike that graf for the very reason you dig it, Gregory. It isn't clear at all to me what the writer is attempting to convey.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

That paragraph (mark me on the likey side) seems to be saying that this moment (Lethal B getting on HOT97) is going to be where the question will be answered. Right now, the question really can't be answered (unless you wanna dip into spurious prognosticating).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

check the video fr lethal b's "forward (pow)" too!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 March 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

saying it's by "an MC called Lethal B" kinda misses the point of the song a lot

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

she's not that fit

I dunno about that. Check the pic in today's Pitchfork profile:

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

what does this mean? "other way round [sic] for once"

sic? whats wrong with that?

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

The "Pow" video is great.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

I think they are imagining that "around" is the proper word in this instance.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Which it is, but the [sic] is unnecessary.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

dude... her on video is hillarious. i'm sold. even if she seems like a gilmore girl gone ghettofandango-a-go-go.

she just reminds me of somebody's little sister. chuckles.

msp (msp), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Which video? The original "Random" or the "Random Remix" video (with a hilarious non-cameo by Riko.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

both are great in totally different ways. on the non-remix, with the tiny video screen she looks like a grimed out version of my wife 10ish years ago. that's who she reminded me of. oh boy.
