This behemoth is longer than most FT articles because of the sheer weight of new entries in this week's chart. Over to you - and good luck to you if you make the Shackletonesque trek to the final para.

Also read Bill's first entry for NYLPM which was knocked off the top of the blog by the chart Leviathan.

bah puretone ist fantastique

and ps TREK is abt the only thing shackleton nevah did: get scurvy and be carried on polar sledge yes; lose ship and float around on ice yes; make tremendous 300-mile shot- in-the-dark open-boat rescue-bid journey yes; clamber over untrod mountain to whaling station yes; trek no

but the t*****n quote makes up for all heh

Wow, is there *really* a song on the UK charts called Blow My Whistle Bitch??? I've got to hear this...

Do people realise that Puretone is a) Australian, and b) like, three years old or something? Then, it was late for drum & bass. Now, it's early for whatever breakbeaty-pop revival might be round the corner. Sss'good, and probably even better overseas where the singer's accent means nothings. Over here it means: you are almost certainly a walking fashion-crime who dates a thug.

Hmmm....I spent a month at work listening to the same radio station (Berkshire and North Hampshire's 210FM folks! - who's breakfast show was also strangely addictive) where they constantly played BOTH Sophie Ellis Bextor solo singles - and I ended up liking them both for the utter relief they bought from my shit job. (I also liked the new Ian Van Dahl for that motorik burst in it - not that that has anything to do with this weeks chart, really.) But then she ruins it all by appearing on TOTP in the most hideous dress I can ever remember seeing (yes, worse than even some of my clothes!) think red 70's maternity number and you wouldn't be far off. All the glamour suddenly dissapeared to be replaced by my cosy memories of her mother presenting Blue Peter. BUT also - what is miss Sophie doing having such big hits again - I thought her career had been written off around the time of the album release?

I quite like that Ellis-Bextor thing actually, I like the little guitar lines in it, I think they're nifty. Has the Aaliyah backlash started yet? Or do the HATAS have to concede that single is actually rather good (esp the bit at the end with the squelchy sounds and stuff)?

I've listened to that Bextor track about fifteen times today. Is there no hope left for me?

I like the SEB single a lot too - it is a damm catchy pop song. Fine use of 'goddamm'. She is the worst dancer in the world, tho

Gallup don't compile the Top 40 anymore.

Chris Lyons, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I knew that, dammit, cos I work in market research and one of my friends was involved with a bid for the chart tender. But I was too lazy to check.

How did that Dre single place so much higher than Jay-Z? And Jay does indicate his intentions for these women: He wants to date them when he comes off tour. He's really a sweetheart, y'know.

scott p., Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jay-Z doesn't have anything like the profile here he does in America - Izzo and Big Pimpin were both mid-teens and I dont think I Just Wanna Love You even got that high. It's annoying for me because it means you play these fantastic pop-hop tracks in clubs and people dont know them. That said I dont like Girls Girls Girls much at all, so the placing seems fair.

SEB also ruined herself for me on TOTP (with Spiller) - attempting to mime to her own backing vocals grrr, and then not even looking embarassed when the lead vocal cuts in over her and she has to suddenly switch.

I rather like Sparkle, on the album and TMH single. I am also amazed she's still having hits.
