Did anyone here build their own records shelves?

Was it hard? Should I bother or just try and buy some? I bet I won't really be able to be bothered.

I'm actually in the early process of building shelves myself (just started designing them on paper). If you have the tools to make them, then I'd say go for it. I'm actually excited about making them and can't wait till they're finished.

I built my own minidisc shelving unit when I was at school.

So disappointing I sold my minidisc player and all the (mini)discs.

i didn't build my record shelves, but my dad (who has very little diy experience) managed to build a bookcase for our sitting room. So it can't be *that* difficult.

records are a lot heavier than books. don't use cheap wood. you probably know someone with powertools. you can get instructions at the library.

and i think it's generally recommended that you put dividers every six inches or so if you've got serious quantities if vinyl.

So I'm guessing it's not bricks & plywood then. That's as far as I got.

oh and depending on the scale of the shelves, it'd probably be a lot easier if there's another person around to help you hold up the shelves while you drill the holes.

That's me! I'll be happy to! Elisabeth and I both have way too much vinyl

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

Once I built a CD/LP bookcase that was shaped like a bay window - the ends were only 6" deep, but it came forward in the middle to make room for the vinyl, and there were shelves for discs on the sides and along the top. It looked really sharp, even though I'm terrible at woodworking.

Now I buy cases at Maverick, in the Allston neighborhood of Boston - a 760-CD case costs $70 - all the local studios buy there. It's the only place to go to buy anything with capacity, most CD cases seem to cost $300, look ridiculous and hold about fifty discs ... Maverick's are plain unfinished wood, but sometimes my wife finishes them and adds trim and they look terrific.

I want lots of small sections, yeah and probably long rather than tall so I can keep all my stereo stuff on top and, also so I can reach them all haha. I think me and Andrew could probably build some anyway. Then I shall paint them a lovely colour and maybe paint some musical notes or floating records on them so everyone knows what they're for.

Chris, do you know if this place has a website?
Thanks.

No mention of the name Maverick, though.

I read this as "Did anyone build their own record sleeves"...

buck-
What are your materials? I have been seriously considering this as most good dedicated stereo shelves are unbelievably expensive. Right now I am using a repurposed IKEA shelving unit but that won't last for long.
Did anybody make their own plans or are you going with a book/magazine design?

I'm going to a lumber yard that sells unfinished hardwood, possibly oak or cherry. Sometimes the yard will cut it for you, so you might wanna check. I have access to a table saw and a wood planer, so I'll be doing my own cutting and whatnot. I haven't got the the prices for what all the materials will cost yet, but it shouldn't be too terribly expensive (i'm not making a huge shelve). Just some wood screws, glue, sandpaper and wood stain will pretty much be it.

fifteen years pass...

After months of pandemic-related delay (partly IKEA's fault, partly me giving up on getting anything delivered), a friend's son is building shelves for me. He started a few weeks ago, should be finished soon.

A couple of friends visited on Friday, and when I showed them the room designated for records, and where the shelves would go, I said I wasn't sure if I'd get everything on there (I've got about 4,000 albums and possibly only enough space for 3,600). Maybe I'd need to put another shelf somewhere else.

"Or," said one of them, glancing down at some of the unboxed albums on the floor, "You might consider paring down your Al Martino collection."

lol

I need to build a 3rd shelf to replace the one I'm using, but every time I price the lumber out I end up at over $200, it's gonna be a winter project

I did build four beautiful wooden boxes for my 45s maybe ten years back

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Sunday, 15 November 2020 16:32 (four years ago)

I don't know how it costs out, but I'm basically paying my friend's son 50% above what it would have cost through IKEA (meaning, of course, all the assembly would have been up to me, and that's not something that comes easy to me). The problem with IKEA was that a) you can't phone a store directly, only head office, b) stores won't phone you, so c) they were basically asking me to rent a van for the day, drive to the nearest store 90 minutes away (because they've suspended deliveries in my area), and hope the shelving I needed was in stock that day. They said I could check online, too, but when I asked if it was a good bet that they wouldn't be sold during the 90 minutes it took me to get there, the guy responded by saying "They go pretty quickly." They wouldn't even take payment up front to hold them--ridiculous.
