Because I want to know if I should spend somewhere under four dollars on a used copy of their first album. My intuition tells me that the answer might be.........yesssssss!

Oh yeah, definitely. I've owned that thing on three formats over the years and was just listening to it last week.

Ignore the suits and you're home free. Subsequent albums are more AOR, less power-pop. Drummer Jimmy Marinos was rock-solid and he sang all their best songs.

Where are the jokes about Keats being a rubbish drummer, but that lead guitarist Shelley's wife can sure sing?

alext (alext), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to say classic, although nothing sends my wife quite into a frothing, apoplectic rage like "What I Like About You," rather inexplicably.

No, don't ignore the suits. The suits are part of the appeal.

Weirdly, I went years without thinking of them but heard "Talking in Your Sleep" twice in the last four days. Then they came up here.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

"talking in your sleep" >>> "what i like about you"

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

"When I hold you in my arms at night/don't you know you're sleeping in the spotlight"

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

It's got great cheesy delay: "when I hold you in my arms at night (night night night)"

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

It's more like "I hear the thecrets that you keep, when yer talkin' in yer thleep".

That guy had a therious lithp.

"Talking In Your Sleep" = CLASSIC, a 3-way collision between The Police, Rick James and the Poppy Family, and possibly my favourite single of 1984, and the competition was extra-stiff that year. (Certainly, it's better than any other hit produced by Caucasian males in that particular year A.D.) Love that spare bass line, doubled by (I think) an envelope filter. Plus the echo on the last word of every line. And even the BIG '80s DRUM SOUND, which I normally dislike on principle. Classic for that song alone. (They had a few others, didn't they?)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

I get all Alex in NYC-style mad when I hear "That's What I Like About You."

deej., Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

The Police, Rick James and the Poppy Family,

with a bit of billy joel's "movin' out" for good measure.

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I saw them in a bar the night I became of legal drinking age - whooo! Great, rockin' power pop. 'Tell It To Carrie', "When I Look In Your Eyes'... classic.
