Most badass metal ever? Genre bending!

green uno skip card (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I like !

KENNY LOG IN, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The singing reminds of Nickelback though.

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pretty tight, but I like Flood better.

Also, the most badass metal is surely...

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

With the double necked guitar!
Theres a different version of the same album thats a tribute to a Venom cover. Being sold through Southern Lord.

just got akuma no te from them in the mail yesterday!

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

BORIS is pretty good. But seriously, I don't understand people who can listen to tons and tons of this stuff. Remember that thread we had on the Wire's "Subterranean Metal" primer? Like, who wants to own a dozen albums of feedback and monotonous riffs? I like Earth as much as the next guy, but jeeze.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't get me wrong, though, I think it's all pretty classic in small doses! But there doesn't seem to be much differentiating artists working in these little niches.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hang on Ian! Boris is totally different than Sunn O))) or Earth. They have actual metal songs that Real Metalheads would like! Its not all just droning and chanting. Some of the songs on Amplifier Worship have much the same character as the long repeated riffs in Lightning Bolt's "Two Towers".

green uno skip card (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

and some of their stuff is total detroit rock riffage.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oh ho. the only Boris I've heard (not sure what it's called; neon orange case. hectic line-drawn covers) sounded pretty Earthy.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Was that the one with the GUMMI WORM? There are actual riffs on that record. Search out "Hamma".

green uno skip card (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

'Heavy Rocks' is one to check out if you want some straightforward doom metal. Pretty damn fine it is too.
Whats the album with Keiji Haino like?
Oh and theres 2 albums with Merzbow that I havent heard.

Rock Bastard, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Aww Nicole, why didn't you tell me instead of having potty talk on the phone?

BOATPEOPLEHATEFUCK (ex machina), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
This album rocks so FUCKIN hard! Renewed my faith in metal yadaya yada, sludgy yadda yadda, epic goodness yadda yadda. That isn't a guy on the cover of the nick drake look alike, their lead guitarist is a girl.

hector (hector), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah i break that one out all the time, especially while driving.

hey, is it true there is a Boris DVD??! Has anyone seen it? I bet it's amazing. No info about it on the Southern Lord page...

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I have a Boris Tshirt!

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Theres a couple of Boris dvds. The Feedbacker one i think is ultra rare and sells for crazy money on ebay.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

wow! gotta get some of those. thanks for the info

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

This is nice.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

It is indeed. Check the youtube footage of it if it's still up.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 07:59 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

Has anyone here picked up the Boris & Merzbow live album? That sounds like it could be the best or the worst thing ever.

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

I just got it in the mail the other day. Only one spin, but its pretty fucking awesome. Merzbow adds just the right touch of schizo noise to the proceedings. I really need to dig deeper into it though.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

what's the name of it? i've only heard sun-baked snow cave. it's very good.

Mark Clemente, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

Rock Dream, out on Southern Lord in the US. Good to hear you like it- despite some misgivings about Merzbow backing them up in a more traditional "rock" context, I did go ahead and order it, since I figured I could sell the "limited" version on eBay later if I didn't end up liking it.

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't got it yet as I'm skint, but I have heard it once and it's pretty good.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.southernlord.com/images/promo/boris-merzbow.jpg

to echo the above: i picked this up tonight and it's fucking incredible. lots of tracks from Pink, a few older ones too, a 35 minute version of Feedbacker to open the set, and *lots* of Merznoise on pretty much everything. it's still very Boris-y, not similar to Sun Baked Snow Cave, just Boris songs with Merzbow on top.

side note: i caught the Austin date of the tour earlier this year with Michio Kurihara, pretty much the same setlist here (give or take a couple songs) but the difference between Kurihara and Merzbow guesting on the tracks is strikingly different. both fantastic though, and this is excellent.

stephen, Sunday, 16 December 2007 04:53 (eighteen years ago)

35-minute version of Feedbacker? Dayum, I may actually pick this one up.

Feedbacker is my pick for Boris' best album, with Absolutego not far behind.

Ivan, Sunday, 16 December 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

oh, i always wondered and never bothered to find out - Absolutego, as in "Absolute Ego" or as in "Absolute Go"? the first one, right?
