You can't go wrong with The Biggest Ragga Dancehall Anthems for the last 6 years.

That's the greensleeves ones, right? (why 6 years in particular?)

on the same label, the Ragga Ragga Ragga! comps are, I think, better overall quality, but there's a lot of crossover with the The Biggest Ragga Dancehall Anthems and you get more bang for the buck with the latter.

Cuz they only started doing them in 1999.

The Biggest Ragga Dancehall Anthems feature 40 tracks across two discs for just about the same price as Ragga Ragga Ragga!'s 16-20 btw on one. I don't rate any of the VP comps as highly as the Greensleeves ones and unfortunately Jet Star stopped doing the Just Raggas :(

ragga ragga ragga 2003 is one of my favourite cds of all time.

when my dad left, he left behind all his old records. it was only till recently i was looking through them all and found one called the yellow, the purple and the nancy on greensleeves from about 1983 i think. it's a compilation of yellowman, purple man & fathead and sister nancy tunes. it's so fucking good, i can't recommend it enough.

The Biggest Ragga Dancehall Anthems: I gave up after four years. I like 1999 best.

Also try Rough Inna Town and another Maximum Pressure one whose name I forget. It has Ring the Alarm Quick on it. They are a bit classier, with sleevenotes and pictures and everything and all that.

Oh actually if you great general overviews of 1980s-90s dancehall get the very good Dancehall 101s on VP.

the cover is amazing. it has 3 horizontal stripes, yellow, purple and sky blue and on each it says the yellow, the purple, the nancy respectively. at the end of each stripe is a picture of the artist. yellow man in a camo jacket and beret, all salmon pink peeling skin. purple man has a green beanie and light blue hawaian shirt on and big coke bottle glasses. nancy is sitting on some rocks, wearing an addidas outfit, the shorts are like swimming trunks (if you look close enough you can see some pubic hair poking out the sides) and her tits are all saggy and flop over her belly. she has big gold bracelets on and a cigarette. she looks well cool.

sorry, xpost.

I've got the two-disc greensleeves comp of early dancehall and it's terrific, not sure how it stacks up to the competition though.

you should check out the massive b/bobby konders mix cd mad sick head nah good too; it's a nice little over overview of some of the big late 2003 early 2004 riddims like coolie dance etc, although it depends how you're approaching bashment, whether you want to hear it as a song based music or in it's more rawer rave based form, loads of different versions of the same riddim mixed and chopped together for a long time.

Ragga Ragga Ragga 2003! would be worth it solely for Bounty Killer, TOK and Buccaneer's "Real Badman" which everyone seems to be jocking on mixes lately (I've seen it on three in the past 4 months.) It's (like most Opera House stuff) ridiculously OTT and great.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

I am kind of irritated they didn't do another Bobby Konders' style mix this year. Why call it volume ONE if you aren't going to follow it up?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

sorry, that post wasn't meant to be as patronising as it sounds. just listen to it however you want.

one month passes...
which of the Ragga Ragga Raggas are the standouts other than 2003? and i'm talking not just about the recent ones that go by the year but the earlier ones that are just numbered by volume. i have vol. 14 and i love it, and i checked out either 15 or 16 and only a few tracks were any good.

RRR #16 (from 2002) is really great as well - it has Elephant Man's "Shizzle Ma Nizzle" and one of my favourite Sizla songs ever in the form of "Empty The Clip" plus Capleton's ace "Them Running Out" and... heaps!! That was a really nice moment in dancehall's recent development actually: the ideas and production were starting to blossom radically but it was mostly still dark, edgy, dramatic (all the strings!).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

I like the equinoxxx riddim.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

sorry that was sort of out of nowhere. Just enjoying TOK's "Ride My Pony"
