We all know at least one of the 'great stories' behind songs in rock/pop music. I'm thinking particularly of "Layla," which Eric Clapton wrote about Pattie Harrison, George's wife at the time. They're controversial, they're gossipy, they intrigue ..
but I happened to catch P.M. Dawn's "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" on the radio the other day, and I was struck by how odd the Christina Applegate reference in the lyrics was. Prince Be sings:
"Christina Applegate, you gotta put me on./Guess who's piece of the cake was Jacc Bond?/She broke her wishbone and wished for a sign./I told her whispers in my heart were fine./what did she think she could do?/I feel for her, I really do./And I stared at the ring finger on her hand,/I wanted her to be a big PM Dawn fan,/but I had to put her right back with the rest./That's the way it goes, I guess.
I searched the net and couldn't find any information on exactly what's happening in these lyrics. but I'm curious .. anyone know of any interesting/gossip-ridden references like this within a song? two caveats: the first -- that it be a lyric within a song, not an entire song itself about someone a la "Layla," and second -- since there are entire active threads about hip-hop battles elsewhere, we should avoid that for the most part. but any genre will do ..

I always wondered about that myself, it seemed so random...

He probably overdosed on Poptarts and the words came to him
in the form of neon strobe lights.

Could the "Christina Applegate" bit be a reference to Tribe Called
Quest ("Bonita Applebaum")?
