whats the worst "x sound like y playing/doing/on z" comparison youve come upon?

and the follow up question: How many utter crap records have you bought thinking you were buying something that sounds like The Pixies?

This reminds me that I recently saw Che Guevarra's "Motorcycle Diaries" (the book) described as "Das Kapital meets Easy Rider." Hilarious.

I always thought the oft-cited description of Duran Duran --- "The Sex Pistols meets Chic" -- was pretty preposterous. A great concept, mind you, but there's an awful lot of real estate between those two names. Moreover, I don't think they pulled it off (as great as Duran Duran are).

you have been watching VH1 Classic, no?
I hear they brought New Wave music to Main Stream culture.

i recently heard a mash-up of the vocals from "sloop john b" and the instrumentals from "smells like teen spirit". it sounded exactly like weezer, which made me think some music writer made it just to prove a point.

thats the best misleading description of duran duran i've ever heard.

Well, yeah, but the reference has been bandied about for years (ask Dee!), and I think John Taylor himself coined it. The whole "they brought New Wave music to Main Strem culture" thing, however, is all Vh1 Classic....and it makes me wince every time.

I've never had the slightest clue what Xgau meant when he described Devo as "Meat Loaf for college kids".

bands that brought new wave music to mainstream culture either at the same time, or way before, duran duran:

the cars
the police
blondie
the go-go's
the human league
culture club (almost exactly simultaneous with duran duran)
way too many others to mention

as for a duran duran tagline, i think adam & the ants meets chic would be a tiny bit closer than sex pistols meet chic.

And "pretty good borrowing of latter-day Roxy Music."
