where to start?

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Classic Rave Volumes One and Two on Moonshine. Then the Speed Limits also on Moonshine. Also pick up History of Our World Part One just on general principle. If you live in England do something different haha.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's probably the only one of those comps you need. They got increasingly tiresome very quick.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

The three old skool CDs on this:

http://www.discogs.com/release/41495

are good!

ewmy, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

you definitely need to be careful. my local everything $10 shop has about 6 different "old skool/rave classics" boxes - 6 discs for $10!!! but, uh, half of this stuff is on ministry of sound and from like 2001. i bought three of em and managed to get about 60 tracks actually from 89-93.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Search:

XL Recordings vols. 1, 2, 3
Speed Limit 140+ BPM vols 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8
Rave On!
Best of Techno vols 1, 2, 3, 4
History Of Our World Pt. 1

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Search also various Techno Trax compilations and Chris Sheppard's Techno Trip compilations.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah I forgot about those XL collections. I wholeheartedly recommend Americans buy the version released here (the American Chapter?) which is fantastic.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

XL Recordings vols. 1, 2, 3

Terrific call. Also Chapter 4 of the same series, if for no other reason than containing my favorite "rave" track ever ("Ooh I like it") and the impeccable "Pilgrimage To Paradise". (Also worth searching for a few different tracks is The American Chapter)

Also good are the first few volumes of the R&S "In Order To Dance" comps. As are the first handful of Reactivate comps.
And surprisingly the "Rave Anthems" comp put out as a cheapy dodgy catch-all comp has a quite terrific tracklisting and includes a lot of "forgotten" classix (http://www.discogs.com/release/106691)

"Bombscare" still takes me back.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Classic Subbase is also quite good as is Kickin Mental Detergent and Hardcore Leaders 1 & 2 (after that's they jungle.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Oh and Classic to the Core 1 & 2 (although by this point you are getting a lot of redundancy.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

i just bought this for 2$ to get some shits and giggles. i wouldn't suggest it

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

KICKIN MENTAL DETERGENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God, I want to go home right now and pull out all of these albums because I think I have all of them except maybe the Classic Rave ones.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

(xpost bah)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

i listened to "Ooh I like it" about 20 times in a row the other day. It came on my iPod and everytime it'd start to end, i'd push it back to replay it.

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Yes, they are all four volume sets.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

I was just looking at the tracklisting for Best of Rave 2 and I think I just had a minicum.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

I was just looking at the first disc of This Is Acid and can someone tell me if the last song is any good? Because going by the title it should be my theme song.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

(Er, Best Of Acid, you know what I meant)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

OOH I LIKE IT

just adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

Haha holy shit. I want that now.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

TS: "Ooh I Like It" vs "Hurt You So"

Also SEARCH: AWESOME 3 -"Don't Go"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

(The comp that is. Not Dan's big dick. Or both. But definitely the comp.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I vote "Hurt You So", but that is a taking sides where you CANNOT go wrong.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Dan that track is relentless! It endlessly stutters the words I got a big dick-I gotta-I gotta-I got a bick dick. A big dick. I gotta big dick. Dick. Dick-dick-dick.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

ahhhhh sh*t!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Somewhere the Ying Yang Twins are preparing to sample that track.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

OH MY GOD MUST HAVE IT

You know, look at this: http://www.discogs.com/release/103775

Clearly Low Price Music is the BEST LABEL EVER.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

xxpost
(or at least that's what I was listening to when I started going to raves)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

thats pretty much the same tracklist as the jungle one Dan

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

4
1

etc

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Haha!

ALL HAIL LOW PRICE MUSIC.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

TS: "Ooh I Like It" vs "Hurt You So"

Also SEARCH: AWESOME 3 -"Don't Go"

Ack! I was listening to "Hurt You So" and "Don't Go" this past weekend!

Both found on the $15 6-CD "The Ultimate Old Skool Album", which is mostly neither ultimate nor old skool, but has more than enough wheat to put up with the chaff for $15.

I would love a nice Johnny L career spanning comp.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

i just got all 4 cds of "best of acid" yesterday at my local used store for $3.99 apiece.

wholeheartedly recommended. if i had to pick one i'd get #3 because it's got the obscurest stuff on it. (secret knowledge: the artist "hard hands hula" is a little-known dj pierre pseudonym)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

you know everyone goes on about the "history of our world" discs but i actually prefer the "history of hardcore" set.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

can you believe i had a promo of that and sold it?

*weeps*

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

i simply don't like my classics truncated.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

so, i've been trying to think for a long time what will be the hipster "ironic" obscuro music to listen to in 10yrs when the 90s are retro. will this be it? because i really can't see grunge getting big again (besides the fact that it's never really left and is worse than ever)

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

please don't jason.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

don't think? or don't suggest this? or don't feed the fire for the ILMassive?

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

don't suggest some ironic hipster might someday piss all over things i treasure

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)
