I think M.I.A. is rubbish.

So do I.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

you have to be joking..

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

So how many seconds until we get a "The thread where people who think people who think MIA is rubbish say people who think MIA is rubbish are rubbish"?

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I thought this was going to be about daft punk

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

M.I.A. is awesome.

What?

Oh.

Fuck.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I think M.I.A. is roffle

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

MIA no longer exists as music to me, purely as discourse. Although not actually having the album or mp3s with me is surely a part of that.

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

M.I.A. is an abstract concept in my mind because I didn't like the mp3's and deleted them and can only vaguely remember what they sound like.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

zzzzzzzzz

-- heywood jablomi (emot...), March 16th, 2005 7:15 PM.

yeah that was my reaction to her music too.

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Let the backlash begin!

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

I like M.I.A.'s music well-enough. But is she the Barry Bonds to everyone else's Joe McEwing? NO, FFS!! She's more like mid-period Mike Sweeney, when every swing produced an RBI!

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

I think M.I.A. is M.E.H.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

That was semi-cathartic. But what I really need is a thread where people who *still* think modern top 40 country is rubbish (even Big & Rich) can say so.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

Let the backlash begin!

To be fair, I've been riding the fence since the beginning. ;-)

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

Without fear of reprisals, right? Cuz the worry that you are gonna get a bullet in the head for daring to let fly with this shocking opinions is one which haunts your every waking minute, yeah.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

i just heard this today!!!

there's this band is SF called cRaCk:WEAREROCK from a couple years ago that all of you MIA people should be checking out.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

i don't think they're nearly as trendy and they're much noisier and have more chaotic beats but MIA's got the same gist down.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

Without fear of reprisals, right? Cuz the worry that you are gonna get a bullet in the head for daring to let fly with this shocking opinions is one which haunts your every waking minute, yeah.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm wondering who is missing the joke here more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

Uh sure.

It was a joke...in all honesty, I'm not really riding the fence, i just don't care either way. And no, I don't expect anyone to be shocked by or care what i have to say on the matter.

deej., Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

let's hope not! mia (and um whoever else is trendy and only talked about on the internet anyway unlike rock n roll which definitely still has the PULSE OF THE NATION!!!) is rubbish! 35 (at heart) forever!!!

the great thing about noise bands is the sense of community, the sense that the music matters and is doing something fresh and new

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

not sure what j blount is on about, as i have yet to hear this "rock" person (who is apparently back you say?). but i do agree with the rubbish part, so right on blount you pundit!

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

yeah I think gygax brushed his elbow against a candlestick that was actually the switch that initiates blount's launch sequence.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

you should listen to some college radio man, that shit will blow your mind.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

YOU MUST CHILL! I HAVE HIDDEN YOUR KEYS!

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

this one time this dude on the college radio played a track and at first it was just some really halfassed garage rock like from around 1966 only played like some new york record geeks from 1986 only they only played that part for like a minute or so like it was 1981 or something and then it was just blaargh feedback for like fifteen minutes or so, fucking mindblowing man, like nothing you've barely heard before.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

"college radio" - oh, like The Four Freshmen?

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

Um, not sure what rock music seeming a bit exhausted right now has to do with whether or not MIA is any good.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

I don't see how this could be the right thread for anything.
Anyway, I've listened extensively to Arular and Piracy and caught her live and the bottom line is that she's fun.
Diplo is fucking amazing.
Ya'll haters got issues.

Having just read through this entire thread, I've concluded that Must See TV is about a million times more interesting than MIA.

No mention of The Michael Richards Show? My buddy and I anticipated that show for months our freshman year of college.

Also, the post upthread about how Diner spawned the whole mid-1990s sitcom phenom (friends sitting around talking about shit) failed to mention that Tim Daly (of Must See TV Wings fame) was in that movie.

PB, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

This thread should have been locked after the first post! I'm still amazed that people don't get horribly embarrassed when they find themselves agreeing with Mr. Snrub.

My 7th grade honors english teacher once took the time to explain to the class that Night Court really wasn't how things worked.

Also: Harry Anderson's mullet on Night Court vs Harry Anderson's mullet on Dave's World(the show featuring Meshach Taylor, best known as Hollywood from the Mannequin movies, ALSO starring James Spader!)

Plus, John Larroquette's show was great for the first two years when it was dark as fuck and about a recovering alcoholic rather than the season three retool where he got a wife & a kid.

that show was the first place i ever saw Bob Goldthwait break character.

oh yeah, and check out the list of Night Court guest stars

Guys, guys. There was a mistake in the marketing of this record. This is something called "pop" music which appeals to a certain type of listener. Please return to the joyless ghetto of corny indie fuxxorcisms on pitchfork.
