ii. the south park movie
iii. the opera ep of futurama
iv. COP ROCK!! (ok i never saw this but i REALLY REALLY WANTED IT TO BE TERRIFIC)

actual real new musicals as put on on broadway (or worse: in london) are generally miserably bad, surely

but if done by the back door of TV they are top!!

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Ya know there's a musical version of War of the Worlds coming out? Maybe it's already out, I dunno. I work at a comic book company and I when I found out we got the licence to do a comic adaptation and accompanying swhag, I assumed it was for the movie. Nope. Musical.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

"those movies that got made into musicals (producers, hairspray) are being made into movies too. "

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

The new golden errors of musicals

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

also "the terrors of tiny town" is better than he says it is, though i don't remember the song

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

Tim Curry in the Worst Witch and "Milkshake" in Can't Stop the Music are the WORST musical moments??????

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

hey actually Grace Of My Heart would have been a terrific tv pilot (especially if the i.douglas character was also a MASTER SLEUTH)

jones (actual), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

tokyo r did you ever read the michael feinstein review (in the voice) of MISS SAIGON?

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Tim Curry in the Worst Witch and "Milkshake" in Can't Stop the Music are the WORST musical moments??????

If not worst, definitely among the most unique.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

where's rattle and hum on that list???

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

mark s: no

since i can only listen to tapes in my car, i listened to Miss Saigon for the first time in years, and it's so weird!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

it was the CRUELLEST, FUNNIEST bad review i ever read of a musical (or anything else, much): i wish i'd kept a copy

mark s (mark s), Friday, 18 March 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Team America was kinda beautiful.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 18 March 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

For TV shows, check out the Clone High School musical episode from last year (I think). For stage musicals, one relatively recent one (96 or 97) that is just wonderful is Floyd Collins. Oh yeah, and Hedwig.

no one in particular, Friday, 18 March 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

given that i REALLY LIKE musicals and am fascinated by them in regard to the ahem POLITIX OF FORM it is v.silly that i have not seen (even to dislike):
i. hedwig
ii. moulin rouge
iii. dancer in the dark

mark s (mark s), Friday, 18 March 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

hedwig is fantastic, really great and fun. i still haven't seen all of moulin rouge, i'm not a baz luhrman fan and it looks just not ridiculous enough for me, i've been tempted to check it out though. dancer in the dark is manipulative as hell, quite daft in many places. i cried my eyes out every time i saw it and i saw it several times. guffman and a mighty wind should be noted on this thread too.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 18 March 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Hedwig is awesome, Moulin Rouge is alright if you like that kind of thing and Dancer In The Dark is flat-out brilliant.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

dan is there anything not here that ought to be?

also: is popular available on DVD yet?

mark s (mark s), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

"a grand don't come for free"!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

The musical scene in Run Ronnie Run with Mandy Patinkin was the saving grace of that movie.

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm telling you.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Y'know, the music for Avenue Q is actually worth giving a listen to. It's nice.
Another vote for Hedwig, tho.
