I don't know where you would have put this in the song. You wouldn't want to turn it into some prog monster.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

or WOULD he?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Would have been better as a "prog monster". The song as it is doesn't work out at all.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I like the sort of heavy, jamming sound of the Beatles on this song and on, say, "I Want You," and yeah, a fancy bridge might have ruined that feel.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

A contrasting bridge will almost always improve a song. The more minimalist and repetitive the song, the better a contrasting bridge.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Yeah just think how great "Louie Louie" and "Wooly Bully" would have been if they'd had a three-four section in the middle with harpsichord, strings, and a choir.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

"Louie Louie" and "Wolly Bully" are both extremely boring and repetitive songs, that surely would have benefited from a few chords more and some contrasting modds.

Keith C (kcraw916), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Would you tell Muddy Waters this if you were in the same room with him?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I think "Polythene Pam" would make a better candidate for a bridge as far, as Abbey Road goes.

Genesis - "Supper's Ready"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 18 March 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Geir would scream like a loony if he were in the same room as Muddy Waters

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 18 March 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

"Supper's Ready" already contains, like 30 different contrasting bridges. It might take a couple more without losing quality, but I think there are others that would need it more. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

OMG, imagine if there was this like totally wicked bucket drumming middle-8 in REM's "Everybody Hurts"! RAKW!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

I mean RAWK obv!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Muddy Waters
Ha! I was thinking of Howling Wolf. There's one song where he sings blues changes but the band never stops vamping on the I chord. "No Place To Go," I think.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Some Roland Kirk cussing/nosefluting in Coldplay's "Clocks".
A big New Orleans hornulated major key coda slapped onto the end of "Stairway to Heaven"!
Jack Black doing his 'rickadoodoorrrickadickadoodoo' schtick all a cappella style smack dab in the middle of the Friends theme!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

A voices-heard-in-the-nuthouse freakout in the middle of "Dreams."
A brassy Earth, Wind and Fire style workout in the middle of "I'll Be Around."

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

haha omg slap a fatdaddy washtub bass run right before the second chorus of Radiohead's "Just"! bah doompoom boomboom doompoom boompoom bah dooooooooooh YOU DO IT TO YOURSWELF YOU DO

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Somebody with the tools should throw the 3rd verse of "Jus a Rascal" a cappella right after the second chorus of "Yellow"!!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

anything from tales from topographic oceans

Geir what do you think of Led Zep "Whole Lotta Love"?

dave q (listerine), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Geir what do you think of Led Zep "Whole Lotta Love"?

About as boring as most of their more blues oriented songs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

well, you can't say there isn't any contrast, the verse/chorus is amelodic and the bridge is atonal

dave q (listerine), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

That doesn't mean he likes it.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 18 March 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

"Higgledy-Piggledy" by The Monks would have been greatly improved if Larry had done some Eric Carmen/Brahms-style keyboard stuff in the bridge.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 March 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

i always thought that the bridge from 'Straight Up' by Paula Abdul would slide seamlessly into 'O Superman' by Laurie Anderson, maybe about 7 minutes in, and would really give the track the spark that it's maybe missing.

ok, i haven't always thought that.

Lee F# (fsharp), Friday, 18 March 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

It is good to see that you've come around to the idea, though.

'haitch' (haitch), Saturday, 19 March 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

anything from tales from topographic oceans

You think there aren't enough contrasting sections already? Interesting... ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 19 March 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

"Cold Cold Ground" by Tom Waits would be his best song if it wasn't just the same two chords all the way through. It's amazing it doesn't have a bridge.

Geir what do you think of VU's "Sister Ray"?

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Monday, 21 March 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Geir what do you think of Stereolab's "Jenny Ondioline"?

Geir what do you think of VU's "Sister Ray"?
My sentiments exactly.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 21 March 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

Hey now, there's THREE chords in "Cold Cold Ground", and it IS one of his best songs!
